I’m just an occasional drywaller but I have always used a straight knife and pan until my last project several months ago. Ripped out the crumbling plaster walls of my family room and replaced with drywall. I hate cleaning the pan and went with a 14” hawk and swapped the knife for the Marshalltown 13 in. x 5 in. Golden Stainless Steel curved finishing trowel with the Durasoft handle. Thank you so much for for your prolific use of the hawk and trowel to convert me. I will never go back to the pan unless I’m mixing hot mud. I’m very satisfied with the Marshalltown trowel. Trowel was $57 U.S.

Marshalltown 14x5" Golden SS Drywall Trowel (bought at Lowes) for $47 USD (~$60 CAD). After spreading carpet glue on floors for many years, the size seemed just right. Might feel differently about that after doing ceilings! I know there's always better, but this is the best trowel I've ever had for sure. Still a mudding newbie but kept 99% of it on the hawk and/or on the walls. Got to give the trowel some of the credit. Marshalltown also makes GREAT 4" and 6" SS taping knives--the blade and handle are like one, seamless, integrated piece. Amazing. So smooth. Easy to keep clean. FINALLLY, the tip Ben gave about the curve in the taping knives was pure gold. Made all the difference. Thank you!

Hi Ben, thanks so much for for the great videos on drywall. I have been doing my reno for a few months now and your videos have help sooo much :) I still have a real pain with bubbles. Could you make a video on drywall over VOG panels (Vinyl over Gyprock)? Wow its a challenge lol . Manufactured home needed a paint job so I removed the battons ,taped and mud the joints. Oh for additional challenge , VOG panels are not tapered so all joints are butts. I carved out the joints, confilled them, then tapping mud, then all purpose and lastly finishing mud. All layers after the taping mud experiencing lots of bubbles.
@iamfisherman4578
@iamfisherman4578 Жыл бұрын
@Robert Swaine I did my homework for about 6 months, lol still learning though. Ben's videos have been the most helpful but I also checked the VOG panel manufacturer as well. The trick is ,at least for me is wash walls with TSP twice. Carve out the butts and fill with confill. Mix taping mud with PVA glue and tape normally. First coat is with general purpose with a little PVA. Next was a learning curve but Ben's bubble solution video of a wet skim followed by fill seems to be working out. After final I have been using an oil based primer/sealer with 2 coats over the compound and VOG panels. Then I apply 2 coats of paint. The finished walls look great but working alone it takes a long time lol. Now that it's fall winter I am going to switch to hot mud (Pro set 90 ) on the initial coat after taping to speed up drying and finishing with the higher humidity. PS, The first part of the reno was done spring of 22 and I am just getting back to indoor work to finish it off . The reno is looking great and no fails after about 6 months so I think by doing the research and following good advice it can be done. Tongue and groove ceiling next :)

I've been using Marshalltown for 4 decades now and I have the gold series now with a straight handle, i find the curved handle doesn't feel smooth rolling in the hand. SOMETIMES i have to bend the handle up just for my knuckle to not hit. There's less room for big hands with a curved handle. They come pre- sharpened but I always run it through a smooth cement floor to take the factory edge off and sharpen it up. But I'm sure you know that a worked in trowel is worth more than a new one.. Anyways,jus thought I'd share. Have an awesome day 😎 GREAT VIDEO I AM PLASTERER 1963

@@robcosenza5569 Thanks I’m new to the terminology. I’m just going for a Level 4 finish I.e. no skimming. The guide I have says first coat to imbed tape in joint with 4 inch broad knife, second coat a little wider with 5 inch knife, then last coat with 12x4 trowel. This is on tapered edge joints. Butt joints obviously somewhat wider. So is my third/last coat a finishing or topping coat! Thanks

@robcosenza5569 Жыл бұрын
@@allanpennington , i use my six to spread the mud and wipe down when i bed tape. I top over that with the 12x4 flat flex trowel. Then, i finish coat with the 14x5 trowel. 14 inch isnt necessary. It's just what i learned with. So, i continue with it when i do jobs by hand. You want to make sure that the bevel is full and the tape is covered on your second coat. Honestly, it doesn't really matter what you use as long as everything is flat and smooth buddy!

I also re-sheetrocked the other half and at no time did I ever get these bubbles you keep talking about. I've also helped several friends and family with their sheetrock hanging and remodeling. I almost feel like maybe I'm doing something wrong! Lol! Now I will say on the walls I skim coated I sanded them. But when I say sand I used 180 grit just to knock the paint down a bit and to give the mud something to grab. Anyways I just thought it was weird.

I associate MarshallTown with concrete trowels. Is there a difference between concrete and drywall trowels?
@rickkrieger4455
@rickkrieger4455 Жыл бұрын
This is my question also. When I use to finish concrete and got a new trowel we would place a dime on a flat clean surface at the end of the front bar. Then take a hammer and hit the bar just in front of the handle. This would set the front of the trowel so that it wouldn't leave lines in the concrete. I was wondering if that might be done with a drywall trowel?
@MV-wb2cz
@MV-wb2cz Жыл бұрын
@@rickkrieger4455 Conventional drywall trowels are curved not flat. The trowel Ben is using is a flat trowel. 13x5 has some decent flex to it as that's what you want when finishing drywall. I don't know much about concrete to know if trowels need to be stiff vs flexible.
@conradcoolerfiend
@conradcoolerfiend Жыл бұрын
honestly i think they are interchangable...
@Zyo117
@Zyo117 Жыл бұрын
They basically are interchangeable, but I believe drywall trowels are made with a more flexible material. Also many brands put a handle-ways curve into the towels for feathering. In Canada though, you can buy trowels that are curved the other way, leaving a sort of mud hump on the wall, which, as it dries is supposed to flatten out, because the thickest part of the mud will shrink the most. I'm not a trowel person, I spent ten years on knives, and since my lead plasterer uses curved trowels (which I tried and got pissed off with) I just put a better curve into my 12" knife and flipped it around, so I'm still basically doing his method but with my tools.
@conradcoolerfiend

I absolutely hate the handles on these trowels. Level makes really nice leather grips, but every other company puts cheap handles on an $80 to $100 trowel. Annoying

“If I had a million bucks I’d tell you what I’d do Ben, 2 chics at the same time. It’d probably take a million bucks to get a couple of chics to double up on a dude like me.” Oh, wrong 3way. My bad …. Lol
