I head to the off grid cabin in the woods to stay the night after a day of working in woods. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse right as I was about to sleep and I had to bail. I'm glad I did in the end, but I'm also gutted on what would have likely been a really peaceful night in the woods!

Yes your cabin need quite abit of cleaning or putting things into place. If possible have a place for everything and when finished using it put it back where it goes. Saves you from looking for things but most of all when you return to your cabin everything is in place so you can do the chores needed and settle in to enjoy the night. It's great to hear the animals and the birds singing during the evening and when waking has to be a wonderful thing to wakeup to.

Don't let meat get above 40F 5C for more than 2 hours. If the environment is hot (+80F 25C) or in direct sunlight, 1 hour. This time limit does not reset. In other words, don't leave it out for 2 hours, back in fridge for six hours, back out for two hours.

It's fine if it has already been cooked. I often store meat in my car for several days without a fridge in summer, or a week in winter. Raw meat is best eaten the same day, or within hours if very warm air temperature.

The bacteria in meat, seafood etc reproduce and double in # every twenty min. if there are say 10 bacteria cells per sq Inch of food, which double every 20 min that becomes 40,960 per sq Inch in 4 hours (12 twenty min cycles). Even if you later cook and kill them, they have been pooping and creating waste toxins which are still there. They grow above 40°F and die above 140°F. Food in a restaurant must be kept or held either above, or below those temps. The standard (iirc) is no more than four cumulative hours in the danger zone. The time includes while the food was in the truck on the way to the restaurant, waiting to be put away etc, sitting and cooling after cooking, or waiting for service on the line. The OP is correct, the clock does not reset.

Most "stomach flu" is really bacterial in origin not viral and is caused by mishandling food. Other causes may just be out there in nature. I had the WORST case of gut problems, one that sent me to the doctor a number of years back. Didn't come from food, came from a glove. I had been working outside with heavy leather gloves on. One of my tied out sheep got himself in trouble. I only staked them out where I was working so I could be there for such an occasion. Well I had to remove the glove in order to use my fingers to disentangle the lead. Both hands were holding the tangles mass so I pulled the glove off with my teeth. BINGO... After retracing my daily life for two days with the doctor we figured out what was wrong and got the correct medication. If you have a very severe case that lasts more than a couple of days best to see Doc.

You must live in a nice beautiful area or very close from the pastures, and wooded area. I've wondered if any of the land you build on is family owned. The various styles of cabins and living quarters would be extremely interesting and great for people to come and look at all the work that went into build close up. The overall concept of what you and your dad have done together is a bond and memories must feel great. I never had parents that did anything with me, not even fishing. I had woods right across the street and use to spend all day in them. Trying to build things with just wood , trying to use grass, vines what ever to tie things together. I'm 66 and still to this day would love to be able to know how to build and live off the land. Behind my home is a wooded ravine which I had made into a wildlife sanctuary. I see deer, fawns beauties to see their healthy coat shine in the sun and how black and shiny their hooves are. Wild turkeys from young to older following each other, raccoons, which they use to come up to me and allow me to feed them corn.mThat was years ago, they use to come up on my back deck. Id turn the light on open the sliding glass door and they would just stay there eating the corn off the cobs. One night I was out and the one that always came up on my deck was outback with 6 baby racoons where following her and I went outside they turned around to come to me. The mother just stopped looked at me, I wanted to pick one up but since she and I had a relationship I didn't, i told her she had beautiful little ones and went back to the deck. She stayed there wasn't watching me anymore just waited for her little ones to come back to her. She use to sleep in a tree out back for s number of years. She would lay in the Y shape of the tree in the morning then go up into the hole that I could see. Have possums, sometime the racoon and possum would growl at each other over corn, so I'd throw out another and one of them would go to it, usually the possum. The are Bald Eagles out back there are 2 nest close by. I've seen a red tail fox, numerous other types of eagles and other birds. I don't feel like I was a good father. I didn't do much with my kids. I was in a accident and recieved damage to back and neck had to have surguries. Being disabled made me depressed, anxiety real bad. I wanted to get out in my mind I wanted to get outside. I was healthy muscular always hiking, bird watching, well just animal watching. I look though the woods and catch movement and then try to get people to see them. I love what you doing what type of animals come around and do you see. How old is your dad he seems so knowledgeable and sure does his share of work that's for sure. Do you know about plants you can eat and medicinal use. Your dad at the end was talking about all the trees new growth. Any botanist or just love of Mother Earth and what she has to offer. We the people of the world sure have taken advantage of and abused her so bad we can never undo it, but She'll do it on her own.

What you should do for the road is use the clay. You're essentially, wasting your time. Space logs down three to four feet apart. Then fill in between logs with medium sized rock, like (fist) sized. Then repeat the process overlaying the the gravel instead. Roll over the road with an excavator. Let the logs and gravel set for 5 to 6 day's. And add where it's needed or is the weakest. This what we used to get to tree's that needed removed before building the foundation and framing. In North Carolina the area is always in red clay. Real mushy muddy nonsense that turns into much. So try this? It almost always works for us

Change the awning to red with a red light. Some insects see green and yellow light, the rest see in ultraviolet and blue. None can see red light. Your awning being green will attract insects, and the yellow in the orange light will also attract them. I just thought I would mention it. Off meat can be very dangerous. I'm very glad you are ok. Here in America, the FDA (Food And Drug Administration), a regulatory body, is very adamant about cooking ground meats to well done. With steaks or chops, referred to as whole muscle meat, if the outside is contaminated, brief contact with a hot skillet, flame, or grill will quickly kill the bad stuff. Those bugs get folded from the exterior to the interior of ground meat as it is mixed up and, at that point, the whole thing has to get heated to 140 - 145 F to kill them. If you ate your burger well done (no red meat or juices) the burger probably wasn't the cause from eating it, but maybe from handling it and not having hot soapy water available to wash up with. Add some anti-bacterial wipes to your cabin supplies and use them after you handle any suspect food or just be prepared to wash with hot water and soap, which can be a pain.

Glad you're on the mend. Also, i hope the drainage plan works out. In the past ivelived at the end of a dirt track. Water raises hell with them.

My other half and I got to meet you, your other half and dad at the bushcraft show, and have to say you were some of the nicest people we met there. You guys were so humble and spent ages chatting with us it was lovely. Oh, and the ta axe is awesome 👍

Your doing entire length of it appears a driveway sir? If its just a bad low area you can only do that section most effectively like a 8x12 ish about with digging out all material mud clay sand etc down about 6 to 12 inches evenly then line it with landscape fabric ( black ) Cut those drainage black tubes to be faced up to fill in entirely tight as you can then fill in those tubes with gravel material then take extra landscape material to cover it up then throw back your mud !!!

Glad you were fit enough for the bushcraft show. We used our lose change to buy a couple of your patches, and ya Dad put it in his carpark box. (if the till was light) Very nice to have met you in the flesh so to speak.
