Great video, I think this should be highlighted more. Being a "professional" sounds cool but the reality is that many players do not make enough money to support a family. You make more money working your average job. The problem with this is that the market is not big enough. Many people don't watch the USL and so these clubs have no funds to even pay decent salaries to players.

This is a great video. Very informative. In answer to your question, I don't see the low pay as a human rights issue. Accepting a contract with the club was a choice, and the decision was made knowing what the club was offering. Is it a living wage? No. But they obviously believe that they can find people who are willing to play for that amount of money. And so far, they are right. Good luck on your journey. I wish you much success.

The issue is the closed league system. MLS makes the "lower" pro leagues suffocate. Open sytem / pro-rel would make the whole pyramid breathe and lead to more excitement and hope for lower league competitions. Plus, it is ridiculous the amount of money spent in overinflated closed-league expansion fees where this money could be spent in players salary and infrastructure. In this video, shade is thrown at the whole US pro system and not only LA Force. I do believe NISA is trying to actually solve this issue but it will take time. Furthermore, under US Soccer pro league standards, there is no such thing as semi-pro level. Clubs/leagues are either amateur or pro. In any open system around the world, it is obvious that playing in a certain division, you would be semi-pro and not fully pro.

So, because you are a soccer player you should make how much money and why? You chose to be a SLAVE! Soccer has been utterly destroyed by greed and wanting to be like the Europeans. Let's be us! We can build a better mouse trap! He seems smart - so then please Spencer, give us all sides and show us why things are so broken. Stop as some would say complaining and present a viable solution! Unfortunately not just here Stateside as well. Even some of the top division clubs in Latin America require a lot of effort for little pay. Playing in the lower divisions also usually means less pay too, as most players are just trying to take whatever opportunity they have at the moment in order to hopefully propel their careers to bigger clubs/higher pay. You very much have to love what you do in order to play professionally--especially in the lower realms. I will say, however, that L.A. Force not offering its players insurance is pretty lousy on their part. Hope you can find a new club soon and a better one at that. We're rooting for you man!

I don't entirely think that the low pay is a human rights issue per say, because the player isn't being forced to sign the contract and is completely free to walk away. But I do think that better wages and benefits for players is something that should be improving. I think we judge these lower leagues pretty harshly but lower league soccer, (especially in America) has a lot less people watching, which means a lot less money. Add on top of that ridiculously long government shutdowns and fan restrictions, its very difficult for lower pro teams to make hardly any money at all. Younger leagues like NISA and the NWSL need more time to build a larger fan base before the financial situation gets any better.

You also have to factor that this was a COVID season which meant clubs aren’t making money themselves. If Spencer were to join in a normal non covid season as a starter, he might have been paid the average. Another thing, division 3 soccer started barely 3-4 years ago and NISA specifically is still young and trying to figure out if they don’t die like the NASL. The popularity of soccer in the country even in MLS is growing but anything lower than that the popularity ain’t even comparable, meaning the income is mostly on fans in sits and if you barely have fans you barley have money, thus why players get crap wages from D2 and below. I don’t agree that they should get paid so little but that’s the reality. If any player thinks that if they make a D3 team or D2 team in this country and say I made it, you still have a ways to go from making football your primary source of income

If these teams were to pay their players a “livable wage”, then there would be no lower league soccer in America. The sad reality is that USL and NISA teams get very little revenue, especially compared to the MLS. Average attendance for USL championship in 2019 is just over 4,400, and NISA’s was even less at around 1,600. Compare that to MLS, which was around 21,000. That only accounts for a portion of income obviously, but it’s a decent metric of how these leagues’ teams are doing both financially and in terms of popularity.

@@bryansolares573 no I'm just talking about truth. Like, ppl need to know those are the things they must sacrifice. You know that ice picture about reality of footballer? That's the thing I'm trying to say. At that level, football can still be fun and happy. Cuz we are doing what we love. However, lots of thing we need to take serious at the same time too. It's totally different with you playing some fun ball with your lads at the street anymore. For example, Timo Werner, he is a good player. And all he done is just missing several chances. But look at how many criticism he have faced. Many more examples, Lingard, Morata, Jones, Mustafi...etc. Even any other level for pro players. They start to have pressure or harsh criticism on some "mistakes" they have made on field. Because they earn money to do this. I'm not saying is hard, cuz I'm doing same thing now. But look at so many players, pato, Balotelli...etc. If this is easy like you said, why their are flops in pro football cuz they're "not work hard enough" . Just a simple question, can you face the same criticism those pro players have faced? Interest doesn't equal to profession. Being a pro baller have to faced lots of problem, including salary like what this vid mentioned, injured...etc Yes, being pro footballer is very honorable. I'm a footballer too, also hope I can do it someday. But just want to point out this problem and the reality🤥

Hell, play in Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia. They'd probably pay just fine for a foreigner. Let's face it, if you're not a top tier player, you're going to have trouble making a decent living in the USA. Might as well go to some place off the beaten path and make some bank.

@@fyfoh is not as easy as you think in south east asia. Yes level is low but the teams are very political and backstabbing agents. Only 3 or 4 foreigners per team. Some like vietnam takes 2 foreigners only. I have known an ex mls player played in vietnam and its not easy as it is. He got cut after couple games. He was more fortunate on his return with a better management team. Them we have lee nguyen that played in mls and is Vietnamese so he is classified as local player

My personal opinion on this is yea the pay you are making is not livable, but there are multiple things that need to be looked at on both sides of the pedestal. USL and NISA teams are basically the minor league teams in soccer for MLS, like minor league baseball teams for the MLB. At these clubs you're trying to do one of three things: 1.) Make it to the pros one day or 2.) Looking to play with the remaining career you have left in regards to retiring or 3.) Just playing because you have fun doing it. Like other minor league teams in other sports you are expected to have another job outside of this. That is the American way at the moment. Does it suck you cannot get paid a livable wage doing that, yea it does. I personally feel players could get a livable wage, but that isn't going to be for a long time. Soccer in America needs to change but also grow a larger fan base, be more competitive. Once that happens then I can see things changing where USL teams and NISA teams can pay their players a lot better. Unfortunately in this time we see the world transitioning where people are working more than one job nowadays. So who knows if higher wages will be met ever. In regards to the Women's soccer comment you had made. You can compare the two, you can only get what your team is making revenue wise. You cannot base earnings solely on how a player or team does, revenues need to be put into that as well. More people watched the super bowl over the Women's World Cup Final. You need to have a fan base & generate revenue. But that doesn't mean that one day they can be paid because they could. But you have to go about it the right way, you cannot force it.

You have to remember that a majority of Americans don’t like soccer and not that many people even watch MLS. Football is king here and even in football there is really only one league that players get paid well in. COVID really killed soccer here because people don’t even watch MLS on tv that much, most of their revenue is ticket sales.

The pay is pretty shockingly low. It doesn't quite seem right and there's no way for anyone to make a living doing that. But with no fans last season and not a huge amount of fans in general I can imagine it's hard to pay much more. Is it a human right thing? Not a chance. It's your choice to play, no one owes you anything. It's a privilege to play. However, that being said I do believe teams use that to probably give players less than they deserve. If the league ever wants to attract more fans long-term they do need to encourage talented players to stay with them and make the teams more professional. US Soccer really needs to allow a second division that pays much more. If these third division teams can't pay more they should offer something beyond money, they should give a great experience and work to give each player opportunities for groth. Maybe they do but I suspect they need to do better.

Just because 3rd tier American teams say they are pro doesn’t mean they will pay you like it. America doesn’t have enough football support or talent to have 3 pro tiers. You are playing semi-pro. Professional means you can live off it. Low leagues like usl 2 and nisa are just saying they are “pro” to attract players. When in reality they get paid less then semi pro players in other countries.

Hey Spencer, I don’t disagree with you, but the question is where is that money gonna come from? You and I know football is a business and looking at some NISA clubs I can see why players are paid so low, even before COVID most NISA games have worse attendance than college. If you could do the research behind the revenue clubs are getting and how it is distributed, then your argument would be complete. If not, your argument is socialistic and not feasible until more eyes land on US lower tier pro soccer.
