Early Dylan is like a rap precursor, not all of the songs but several. His voice will grow on you, and remember that Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize in the literature category. If you break down some of his lyrics, particularly in the mid 60s, it's sophisticated poetry with complex rhyming patterns.

Bob Dylan was very involved in the civil rights movement. He sang at the famous Martin Luther King speech. The video is on KZfaq. Yes, Bob Dylan is worth diving into. Album? Blood On The Tracks is my favorite but for early Dylan, The Times They Are A Changin’ is amazing.

ICE-T calls this one of the first rap songs in his new book, "Split Decision." This is from BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME. Great album to do. Esp. IT'S ALRIGHT MA (I'm Only Bleeding) "Darkness at the break of noon, shadows even the silver spoon, to understand, you know too soon, there's no sense in trying." BTW - The 60s radical group that blew up the U.S. Capitol building in 1971 took their name, The Weathermen (later, The Weather Underground) from this song. I think Insane Clown Posse's THE MIDWAY has a similar theme, lyrically.

@@lifeofdariius two other songs id check out by bob dylan "its alright ma, im only bleeding" & "tombstone blues" the other two major songs that, with this song, make up bob's "proto-hip hop" trilogy, of sorts...the production is a bit better than on this one (what he had in hus head here was so new , even to him, so it is a bit rough, but he didnt like to do a lot of takes either) but anyway, ive seen so many other hip hop generation reactors be blown away by those two songs also...both also are from 1965.

Bob was one of the original protest singers, starting as a solo singer/guitarist in the early 60's. It's mostly about the lyrics, but he wrote many memorable tunes that have been covered by everyone in the business. For instance, All Along the Watchtower, covered famously by Jimi Hendrix.

"You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows" -- The militant 1960's anti-war group known as The Weathermen, later as The Weather Underground, took their name from that line. They bombed military recruitment centers to protest the Vietnam War. They mostly set off their bombs at night to avoid casualties, but still killed several people anyway, including members of their group, when a bomb they were making blew up on them. The survivors went underground to evade authorities and a few did so for more than a decade, iirc. The bald bearded man wearing glasses off to the left behind Dylan is the poet Allen Ginsberg. When you're ready for more Dylan, check out Marianne Faithfull's cover of "It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue". PS. For more of his "rap", check out Bob Dylan "It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)" and "Desolation Row" along with others.

Now I'm a huge Beatles fan and occasionally delve into Dylan, such as now thanks to you. I HIGHLY recommend you do Dylan's "Positively 4th St Blues," which, though written 45 years before social media, could be used by any teenager today who gets mobbed on social media as a perfect retort to bullies and two faced so-called "friends." There's a reason he won the Nobel Prize for LITERATURE. Bob Zimmerman changed his last name to honor the linguistic genius of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. I'd say he lived up to it pretty well. "Maggie's Farm" is another gem from the album this one is on. But I would say you "MUST" hear "Like a rolling stone." With lyrics available, if possible. The story of a snooty young socialite who decides it would be fun to "slum it" in the Streets, but finds a much darker reality than she expected. "Brilliant" isn't nearly a strong enough word.

He produced more masterpieces, and took his art in more different directions, than most other artists could dream of. Just for starters, check out "Blonde on Blonde" and "Blood on the Tracks." I'll give you the albums to listen to man. Dylan's first record is great. Lots of covers and he was still coming into his own, but it's worth a listen. His next 7 are classics: The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, The Times they are a Changin, Another Side of Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding. Some other stand outs from later on in his career are Blood on the Tracks, and Desire. Other than that you're probably better off sticking to tracks than albums but you can't go wrong with those albums. also I saw you react to Zeppelin. Their next 2 House's of the Holy and Physical Graffiti will be worth checking out. Still a part of their classic period. Presence and In Through the Out Door aren't as good but still worth listening to if you're a Zeppelin fan. and their last one Coda is a collection of outtakes from their whole career. Fan of the channel. I like hanging out with you whenever you show up

Dylan started out as a folk artist, playing traditional political folk songs from the 1930s, who progressed to writing his own political folk songs about the state of America and the world at the time. His style changed a lot over the years, his first four albums were purely acoustic folk with just guitar and harmonica that sounded like they could have existed forever even when he was referencing things like the assassination of Medger Evers less than a year after it happened in a song that addressed the nature of racism as a tool of the elite to keep people divided against each other and not threatening those in power ("Only A Pawn In Their Game") Subterranean Homesick Blues (argued by some as the first hip-hop song) was the opening track on his fifth album "Bringing It All Back Home" were Dylan effectively invented folk rock, with half the songs on it featuring electric guitars, bass and drums. And yeah, his shitty singing voice with his rural Minnesotan accent was actually part of his appeal cause it made him seem like an average person.

How did you get into the Beatles and Bob Dylan?? Its cool to see the next gen of youngins getting into 60s music. " you dont need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows " and " dont follow leaders watch the parking meters " are two of my favorite lines from this Bob Dylan song. Also if you havent delved into any of the Beatles solo work after they broke up in April 1970 you should check out George Harrison's first solo release also in 1970. It is a double album called "All Things Must Pass". Then check out....cuz i heard you say your digging John Lennon's work with the Beatles a bit more than Paul's songs....check out John's first solo album also from 1970 called "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band". Its very sparse as far as instrumentation goes but its very personal and very John Lennon. Its really just John playing guitar , piano , and singing with Ringo Starr playing drums and John's friend from the early Beatles days performing in Hamburg Germany Klause Voorman playing bass. John had alot of trauma as a kid growing up in Liverpool that he buried deep inside himself during the Beatles career in showbizness but right before he made this first solo album John and his wife Yoko Ono decided to go through Primal Scream therapy. The results are in the album with great songs and great emotion and honesty from John. Also you should check out Paul's best solo album from 1974 called "Band On The Run". ✌

You prefer albums to singles? That earns a sub from this old soul. Bob Dylan was one of the first artists to come out and be overtly political-not that that was his only topic. But for more politics (especially anti-war), try: "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "Masters Of War," "With God On Our Side." (Those first two are essential Dylan songs! And need I mention "Blowin' in the Wind?") Also, regarding your firehose observation: Dylan often called out racism, which few others were doing at the time. Listen to "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll," "Hurricane," "Only a Pawn in Their Game" (amongst others). These songs are about true-life incidences of racism that were in the news at the time and might otherwise have been buried by (white) history. Yeah, Dylan sings funny and his production values are often lackluster, especially in the key 1960s years. This kept me away from him for YEARS. But if you listen to these songs, you might start to warm up to his vibe. And, as an album listener, "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde" are essential albums in music history. If you want an essential album with a little bit better production values - just a little bit - "Blood on the Tracks" is a great album about having to become a mature person.

Lots of political songs from Bob Dylan, and earlier than 1964. Probably his best known song is "Blowin' in the Wind" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7N2nZumqdvGo3k.html) Not my favorite of his, but definitely political. "The Times They Are A'Changin" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5aHd8KS2dmalXk.html) Also political. Both of the above were recorded before "Subterranean Homesick Blues". One thing to know about Dylan: Frequently other artists (with much better voices) did better versions of his songs. His music was covered by a LOT of artists. Here's a random sample: "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9dzlcaA2L2whp8.html) covered by Judy Collins. "When I Paint My Masterpiece" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eL-Rf7iryd-7h30.html) covered by The Band. "Girl From the North Country" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNSTlamEmsvPZ2g.html) Dylan doing what some consider his best love song. "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l82UosiD1brKeJs.html) Dylan doing a fun ballad--sort of a folk / country-western cross.
