People forget that Alan Parsons produced this masterpiece. He had alot of input as to the mixing and flow of these songs. He's a genius

Imagine how we felt in 1973 when this came out! I mean this was done in the analog era when there were no computers to help with mixing an album. David Gilmour the lead guitarist & main singer for Floyd said that a recording session with them was like putting on a concert! This album honestly sounds like it could have come out yesterday let alone 50 years ago! One last thing you should watch the video "Echoes" from "Pink Floyd live in Pompeii 1972" to see what they looked like when they were your age. They play a whole concert in an empty ancient Roman Amphitheater. That ought to give you some idea of the atmosphere for that concert. Again just do the song "Echoes" from that particular concert footage!!

Now you know how we felt in 1973 as teenagers when we first heard this masterpiece on vinyl.

There's a reason this is widely considered the best album of all time. People who say they don't like Pink Floyd either haven't really listened, or are super uncomfortable with feeling their own emotions, in my opinion.

This is usually my all time favorite album. It alternates with the Beatles' Abbey Road. My second favorite Floyd album is Wish You Were Here. A very different album from Dark Side, though.

Let me tell you,... Great reaction. I am 52 years old. My brother took me to The Wall concert when I was 10 and i have been a hard core Pink Floyd fan ever since. 42 years later I still listen to them every day. It's my "therapy". Over the last year I have been watching younger people like you discover them. Sometimes, it can saddens me because it seems a lot of your generation either can't comprehend what they are hearing or lack the attention span to make it through a song. Seeing you react has revived my faith in the future. Spread the word to your friends. Anyone you think has a chance of appreciating it. As a fan who is very familiar with their entire catalog, I would like to suggest complete albums. That is how they were created. As an album. Not a collection of songs. Wish You Were Here album. Animals album. The Wall. All very beautiful pieces to explore.

It's been nearly fifty (!) years since this came out; And yet, every time I put on this record it's as though I'm hearing it for the first time--again. Every song, every lyric, every voice, every instrument and sound effect is seared into my consciousness; It was breathtaking then, and still is now--almost other-worldly. It was fun watching your reactions while hearing this for the first time, Andre, because your responses were pretty damned close to what mine were way back then, when I was twenty-two or three. I'll admit I teared up at the same time as when you pointed out that you had! How truly great that music was (still is!) that it could move people of different generations, cultures, colors. Just goes to show that good music is timeless and universal. Made me wonder how they could possibly follow this up--and yet they did with what I consider equally good music, especially one "Wish You Were Here" (or "Animals", or "The Wall"...) So glad you did this, and to be able to share your experience--peace & tranquility, and keep up the good work--I'm a subscriber now.

Yes, new listeners finding and enjoying Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of The Moon 50 years after its first release. And, there will be others discovering it in 100 years after its first release. Good music truly is timeless. I was 23 years old when I first heard it in 1973.

If you liked this you should check out Ok Computer by Radiohead. That band is most known for Creep off their first album, but this album is seroiusly next level. It still sounds timeless 25 years after its release, and is even sometimes regarded as the Dark Side of the Moon of the 90s. Great reaction btw.

This is widely thought of as one of the greatest rock albums recorded, a true masterpiece. Its 50 in 2023, still going strong....Now you know why you've seen the prism everywhere!. BTW, it was actually taken from a school physics book.

Great great great reaction! Love to see when someone gets and appreciates Pink Floyd and all their layers right away. Make sure to listen to each album in one sitting/reaction. For some albums imperative you experience them that way, others it's just highly recommended. Most will say Wish You Were Here next which is the next album, but I feel you should go backwards a little bit and do Meddle from 1971, then Obscured By Clouds from 1972, then jump to Wish You Were Here from 1975 and progress forward with Animals from 1977, The Wall from 1979, The Final Cut from 1983, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason from 1987, 1994's Division Bell, their last album The Endless River, then double back to pre-1971 albums. It's also highly recommended you watch the Live At Pompeii concert from 1972 and 1995's PULSE which many people say is the best live concert ever recorded, both visually and musically. All that will blow your mind. As amazing as Dark Side is, there's no consensus as to what their best album is. Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall are chosen as the best pretty evenly. Looking forward to more. Incidently, Comfortably Numb from The Wall may be the best song ever recorded by anyone, with the live guitar solo from PULSE being the best live performance of all time by anyone.

Oh, your journey is just beginning. There is so much depth here it is unfathomable. Just take for example the line, "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes" and how it relates to the line earlier in the song, "And if there is no room upon the hill." This latter line is a reference to the Beatles, The Fool On The Hill. Maybe start with their documentary about the making of the Dark Side Of The Moon. Keep listening and listen to it loud there is a lot that goes on in The Floyd's music.

The absolute premium time I heard this was with a group of friends, many years ago, and we'd all had mushroom tea. Yes. Those kind. This album had us all flying around the room, metaphorically. It was VERY strong tea but organic. We were all deliriously, wonderfully, joyously happy at the same time. Only Floyd can do this. "Any colour you like"? Try Pink Floyd “Wish You We’re Here” which is another concept album by them and it was released right after DSOTM. It’s a little bit more rockin but retains a symphony of different sounds/melodies

That "swirling" sound is from a Leslie speaker. Its two speaker horns that spin around inside the cabinet. The guitarist, David Gilmour has said his greatest regret in life is never being able to hear this album for the first time. As for being "cinematic" - two of their albums were actually movie soundtracks. If you like this, you need to check out Comfortably Numb from Pulse.

You're right, it is 10/10. One of the Greatest pieces of art from the 20th century.

Andre you nailed it with "10 out of 10" & calling it art. In my opinion Dark Side of the Moon is a timeless classic that will never lose it's beauty and as you said they were indeed WAY ahead of their time and I feel that at 50 years later it's still ahead of it's time.

I'm 60, and after listening to DSOM over, and over, after hearing Their earlier music, "Echoes", then with Wish You Were Here, and Animals, the world, and I, were collectively stunned at the consecutive Masterpieces, then my older brother and I went and got The Wall, and I can remember it so well, as I listened, and looked at the album thinking, there is no way that they have created cartoon characters of main characters, and not have a Movie in the works. They did not disappoint, They never do. Consummate Artists/Musicians, surely Richard Wright RIP was friends with John Paul Jones, both were/are, Masters of Arrangement, and Orchestration. So much PF Goodness yet to come. Enjoy.

It was a joy watching you become "Floyded"! 😄 If I might be so bold to suggest, in 1994 Pink Floyd went on what I believe was their final tour, the Division Bell tour. Pink Floyd was always known for their spectacular live shows, and on this last hurrah, they blew out all the stops. It was recorded and released on DVD (and CD) as the Pulse concert, and while any song from that show is worth watching ~it really was a fantastic show~ they brought down the house with "Comfortably Numb". It is ~arguably~ one of the best concert performances ever recorded. Guitarist David Gilmour has two solos, and the second one is just....epic. FYI, most Floyd albums were designed as basically one 'work' per album side. Each song flowed into the next, with one break to flip the album. So on most Floyd albums, you can let one song play right into the next ~ if you're so inclined. Also, Pink Floyd has never been about personal fame ~ they believe it's the music that's important, not them. So if you do react to this live performance, take note of how many times the band members are lit from the sides, or the back, rather than from the front.

Buckle up, they do make a movie! I enjoy listening to music with you (even when I’ve heard it a thousand times)!

Alot of people will say Wish you were here next but also make sure you look at Animals. It's my fav floyd album and the instrumentals and story it tells are crazy

Dude I stereotypically first listened to this album during my first ever mushroom trip and it was the most intense, white knuckle, beautiful experience I think I've ever had.

I saw them perform this entire album live in the 70's. They had a movie playing on a round screen behind the band with a lightshow. There was a model of an airplane hanging in the back of the stadium (8-10ft long) which was on a zipline to the stage. It was released on the last song and headed straight into the giant round screen. Mindblowing concert!🌈

We used to put our speakers on the floor and lie between them (this was long before good head-phones were available) .

This album always makes me despair of my own mixes. Absolute sonic masterpiece. 🙃

I'm 3 months late to this party… but I'm surprised that I didn't see anyone provide the important context that this album was the band's reaction in the aftermath of their former front-man, Syd Barrett, going completely and certifiably insane. Which would have a profound impact on anyone. It made them deeply philosophical about life… and what is and isn't considered sane in a world filled to the brim with irrationality. And a very finite life that catches up with us before we realize how quickly it's passing.

I am 48 , I first was introduced to Datkside of the moon at age 14. I am a huge Floyd fan , fav track is Time.

Since you're doing classic albums the next stop should be the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. A lot of people including myself considerate to be the greatest album of all time or maybe in a tie with revolver and or Abbey Road. Like the other albums you have listened to it is unique and brilliant.

Ya know something? Hmm I was a young kid in the early 80’s when I started getting into Pink Floyd. I was primarily a punk fan but funk was first coming on the scene. Hmmm… so much gravity and so much culture happening at that time. I delved deep into early Pink Floyd with Roger Waters but now that I’m old… this older Pink Floyd stuff is delivering now, lol.

You should listen to "The Wall" . This album got started my love to rock music and had a big influence on me when I was teenager and still it has ❤
