I get what your saying and respect your honest opinion but, I think it’s cool when she plays different characters in her writing. She has even said the reason she does that is because she believes that you don’t need to have to literally experience what u write about, for example, you don’t have to fall in love to write a song about it. So when she writes like this “badass” character, it’s not her trying to say she is just soooo angsty like that, it’s simply her playing a character. Btw I love your reviews, it really makes me look at different music with a bigger perspective, I’ve actually learned a lot just watching your channel so, keep it up! Your channel is awesome!

I agree with your point about her persona being the thing that throws some of her songs off but I also think that the persona is real to her. Since she’s still a teenager and has obviously had bad experiences, she most likely created a tough “cool guy” persona to guard off others. While it doesn’t come off as genuine I don’t think her intention is to publicly look like the “cool edgy girl” it’s just a real part of her that is a cover up for her vulnerability, as seen in her “good” and “genuine” songs
@niamhcorrigan3972
@niamhcorrigan3972 5 жыл бұрын
She's often said she believes you can write songs about anything, that it doesn't all have to be personal experience. It's something I respect about her, plus the depression jumps out in her writing so it's not cringy to me. Just thought I'd explain a bit of that persona.

I think the divide between people who like her and people who don't is whether you can appreciate the symbolism and metaphors that she always has in her lyrics. For me, she doesn't come off as cringe or tryhard whatsoever because I know she is telling me a story or trying to express a feeling. But some people just find that cringe and that's okay. Like even in her videos you can say she is being cringe by playing the monster persona or whatever but for Bury A Friend she is not trying to come off as scary she is trying to visualize what it feels like to suffer from sleep paralysis and I feel like she really captures it. For Bellyache when she pretends to be a serial killer she is just doing that, playing a character. Saying thats cringe is like saying any actor is cringe for "trying too hard to be something they are not"

her brother produced and helped co write her album, she has the materials and money now to hire professional producers and all that but i respect that she sticks to her roots. she knows what made her popular and knows what her fans like, a big producer would probably ruin that for her. she’s a kid who loves her edgy persona but also likes to tear it down in slow ballads every now and then. this album is by no means perfect but i respect it a lot more than a lot of other albums honestly.

The thing about this album is that I really want to like it. Her voice is nice(when she actually sings) and the songs sound good. The lyrics are just terrible though, most of them at least. It sounds like something I would write at midnight after reading to much fan fiction. I feel like I’d love this album if she just trashed the dark, edgy, I’m a serial killer, I’m not like other girls, creepypasta cringefest and just wrote simple songs that sound good, or a took a more satirical approach to the whole dark aesthetic kinda like on the beginning of Bad Guy.

In my opinion, and this is coming from a top and Billie eilish fan, this album lacked on lyrical content, while succeeded more in production. However, her other album “don’t smile at me” definitely had more well written songs and didn’t try as much to be scary. Listen before I go, one of the songs on this album, has some AMAZING verses though.

I don't see it as a perona . . . she's a storyteller that likes to tell stories from different point of views . . being a psychopath, a person who's committing suicide etc.

I feel like the word people are looking for with Billie thinking that’s she just being edgy is “facade”, not persona. Writing each song from a different character’s perspective is adopting a persona, and in my opinion it’s a clever way of expanding and improving your writing - it doesn’t always have to be personal and heart wrenching. It can be completely fictional and still be an incredible song.

I’m glad you did this reaction and I’m excited to watch your next review! It’s nice to see someone so honest, even if I didn’t agree with some of the things you thought. I think it would be interesting if you reacted to some of her music videos, (bury a friend, when the party’s over, you should see me in a crown) and interviews so you could get a better feel for her personality, she’s actually very genuine. Also with bellyache (the song about her killing her friends) wasn’t her trying to be edgy she just thinks it’s interesting to write songs in character and she thought it would be an really interesting way to approach a song. With wish you were gay, it’s about how she likes someone and he doesn’t like her back and it would be easier to handle if it wasn’t anything personal, that he didn’t like her but if he was gay and just didn’t like girls. It’s pretty interesting the way it’s written it counts down, I’m not sure if you noticed “is there a reason we’re not through? Is there a *twelve* step just for you? Our conversations all in blue, *eleven* heys. *ten* fingers pulling on my hair, *nine* times you never made it fair. I ate (*8*) alone at *seven* you were *six* minutes away.” I thought it was pretty good writing- twelve steps are for people with addictions so it’s like she’s addicted to him. The conversations are in blue because she’s the only one texting him so the whole conversations in blue. I just didn’t think you gave the song enough credit but I didn’t catch all of the clever lyrics until I listened to it a few more times haha 😆

Your review is interesting to me, i love the brutal honesty of what you're not aware of. You're only paying attention to the songs themselves and not the meanings behind them or how the lyrics work to full effect and that's pretty fine! That's usually how most people go into a new artist's music, by listening to the song and taking it as is without any current knowledge to work with. I think most her songs got the rewards they did because of the meanings and stories behind them as you'd do with any other song, not just for it's production but how well it'll bring you in it's story, after i learned the story of each song it made me appreciate them and her even more. (Such as All the good girls go to hell, there can be two distinctive stories from that, Global Warming "Once the water starts to rise" and the perspective of Lucifer/Satan on the whole mess that is the human race "Poisoning themselves now, begging for our help, wow.") It probably just takes a few more listens to get used to the beats and to connect the story yourself with what little you know of it, it becomes a fun theorizing time because a lot of her songs can be interpreted in any way people want it to be while still having it's own small cannon. I'm eager to hear your second part of this review/reaction, so far you've made me notice the other side of people who listens to Billie and helped me love Billie even more than i do now with better genuine appreciation knowing that i can see flaws and accept them instead of blindly loving whatever without first hearing every part of what she gives out and considering it.

Someone upvote this so he see's it. That vocal effect at 7:09 sounds like a LFO effect chained from the bass (Low-frequency oscillation). It's what's used in dubstep to make a bass wobble. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I would've done it.

I really liked the honest review. I think you may have some misconceptions about her personality/persona tho. She's 100% being who she is, she isn't putting any front nor she is a "serial killer"/badass. That's the common misconception of who only looks at her from far away. She's just not "normal". It's weird to see but it doesnt mean she's faking it. And im not the typical teenage chick that idolizes her. Just a grown ass man that loved of the ocean eyes remixes at the time and upon finding out that she was only 13, has been following her evolution. I like some stuff she does, don't like others.
