Brad, I've been sub to your channel for about 4 months now and I have to thank you for this video in particular. I've never heard of Ants From Up There until 2 days ago when I watched your video. I watched you react to the first 2 tracks before deciding that I want to listen to the rest of the album spoil free. AFUT is extremely theatrical which is just my type of music. I cried. I cried 5 times listening to it. I've never cried more then once because of an album but God damn it AFUT broke that. A little story time: It was night when I was listening to the album for the first time. I decided to go lay in grass and watch the clouds, moon, and stars. Then, The Place Where He Inserted The Blade started playing. I chased the moon with my eyes as it seemingly moved like it was actively trying to avoid my gaze. I watched the clouds drift by covering the sky, sometimes it shifted interchangeably with the dark night. At one point, the clouds had completely covered the sky so I closed my eyes. "I know, you're tired. I'm tired too." My hands were numb, mostly from the cold but I didn't care. I felt my body sink into the ground as a breeze hit me. I just layed there in pure nothingness until the song ended. I slowly opened my eyes. A completely clear sky with the moon and stars staring directly at me. This is the first album I've ever shared something like this with. What I'm trying to say is, Brad, thank you for introducing me to my Favorite album and song of all time.

I think the bread in the bread song represents an annoyance, since Isaac is talking about crumbs of bread in his lovers bed. Essentially she sees him as a crumb of bread in her bed which is to say she sees him as an annoyance and doesnt actually want him there. This is why the lyrics on this song sound so dejected.

The billie eilish style lyric may sound dumb but is a reference for the fact that billie had suicidal thoughts in a Berlin hotel. And the whole album is about a falling relantionship and the main character loves his partner even if his partner don't love him, he is just in pain every time. Also, Mark's Theme was made about the Uncle of the saxophist that died of covid. And yes, the whole album was made around Basketball Shoes, the song was the first and most important song on the Project. Also, react to By the Time i Get to The Phoenix by Injury Reserve, one the members in Injury Reserve died and the other two members maked a masterpiece that changed rap history, this album, Atrocity Exhebition and Some Rap Songs changed rap dude. Please, listen, it was the AOTY of 2021.

I wasn't the biggest fan of their debut (though i still liked it for what it was) but this album really took me by surprise. I didn't expect this much vulnerability and depth going into this, especially on the lyrical front. It really feels like the work of a group of people who have known each other their whole lives joining together to make one big passion project to cap off an era. The songwriting on this album is so powerful at points it made me break down into tears on more than one occasion which doesn't happen very often when i listen to albums. Seeing Isaac depart from the band is heartbreaking but at least he went out on a bang and i'm really excited to see what these guys have in store for us going forward.

My regret is that I didn't listen to the album when it first came out but I feel that if I did, it really would've made me do... something bad, because the first two months of the year were some of the lowest parts of my life, but listening to it yesterday was almost like a reflection on it all, to the point where I could at least go to sleep when it was all said and done. i've been waiting to be in the right mindset for this album. I've only heard snow globes so far and it blew me away, i'm expecting this to be an aoty contender for sure. I think the neutral milk hotel comparisons are apt, especially with the lead singer leaving right after this massive album.. it feels like he put literally everything he could into this and we're left with an incredible piece of music

the way I see it this whole album is Issac’s process of realizing that his relationship is failing and his partner doesn’t really love him, “Snow Globes” is the moment that he realizes that it’ll never work if the other person doesn’t care about him, and “Basketball Shoes” represents the pain he feels after breaking up with them

the tragedy of the place where he inserted the blade imo isn't that his lover doesn't love him back but that she has this deep trauma that prevents them from connecting, the severed nerve that would allow her to feel him. that's why he's SO desperate, why he needs her to respond to him SO badly, because this caretaker-lover needs to know that he can help her and is suffering because he couldn't

At first listen I thought that this album was pretty and bittersweet, but after seeing your reaction and on relistens I've come to the idea that it's just so tragically sad. It's almost like putting on a happy face, pretending everything is okay while internally you feel this great sense of dread and dissonance. Isaac's delivery is practically manic at points, and I think it really ties into the final words of the album 'Your generous loan, your crippling interest'. At the end it's just this amazing catharsis, you're done pretending everything is alright. Going into this album with this perspective just makes the whole thing a lot more tragic and heartbreaking.

tbh i like their debut album much less now that i've heard this one. they do sound like arcade fire and the whole theme of a record is basically crown of love which is funny because couple of years ago isaac wood said that he wants bcnr to be as big as arcade fire. and they could be if he didn't leave. personally i'm not sure if i will listen to their next stuff without isaac. he was one of the reasons i loved bcnr - his voice is really unique and added so much to the lyrics. but all better than ending up like neutral milk hotel or joy division.

That theory stated that the entire album was made around Basketball Shoes holds pretty strong ground, and I find that to be incredibly interesting compared to other closers on most albums. Most albums will end with “the track that sounds most climatic” or “a good banger” but this takes the concept of a closer to a whole new level, incorporating all of the lyrical themes, sound palettes and heavy emotion laced throughout the project. However, the album was definitely not built around the original cut of the song, the lyrics and meaning of the track were a lot different and when it comes to prior For The First Time BC,NR lyrics… they were kinda shit and in places uncomfortable, intentionally so on the latter when it comes to Basketball Shoes but not so intentionally on the former. It was cool seeing a reaction of this album Brad, this album’s one for the ages. Instant classic, without a doubt.

Great review Brad, some funny bits. GWH and the Blade are some of my favourites by them . I didn't feel as strongly on snow globes and haldern just seemed like they didn't offer much new stuff compared to the other tracks but that being said they're still great songs. It's at least a 9/10 for me but there's 2 tracks I'm not as big on compared to just Track X from FTFT

Just discovered these guys after the hype train exploded this week. Its definitely pretty interesting. People seem very excited for this as an all-timer, which I'm not quite tracking. How would you guys say the emotional rawness being turned up to 11 on every single track doesn't come off as heavy handed or self-serious? Not trying to be glib, just curious how it escapes that wire-balancing act? Not sure if it does for me.
