So I "accidentally" cheated and heard 20 seconds of this album by Interpol titled "Turn On The Bright Lights" and it was good... so I decided to listen to the rest of the album due to very popular demand!
Tracklist for Part 1:
1. Untitled
2. Obstacle 1
3. NYC
4. PDA
5. Say Hello To The Angels
6. Hands Away

"It's like a day of summer where everyone's just wearing black." That's probably the most accurate way to describe Interpol, especially since that's half of their band pictures

PDA is incredible. I have such mixed feelings about this guys reviews. I like his commentary but I wished he had listened to the record on his own in silence first. He seems to find quite a lot of depth in his first listen but I’d be more interested in his opinion if I was watching his second listen. I couldn’t ruin my first experience of a record by talking over it and stopping it constantly. I know this is the format of what he is doing but it makes him come across as distracted and shallow.

Of all the ways one could describe how listening to interpol feels like, fun is the one that I would never use. Absolutely top notch content. Will subscribe. Okay so I thought I'd edit this comment with my thoughts and experience with this album. On the musical side: you'll notice there's not a ton of virtuoso instrumental pieces, but the album does not need it to convey its message. The guitars add texture and deepness to the sound, but there's rarely a melodic line clashing with the vocals, it's actually the bass that does the melodic and distinct work. Carlos Dengler is probably one of the most creative person to ever play the instrument in a sorta big band. Tracks like The New and Obstacle 1 would be entirely forgettable if they didn't have such strong, memorable bass lines. The drumming is outstanding, complementing the musical landscape perfectly without trying to impose itself on top of the picture. Conceptually, I believe the album has a certain message. To me this album is an introspective experience. It is designed to touch on the darkest and saddest parts of the listener and turn them up to eleven. It is about missing, loving, destruction, betrayal and pain. But it's also about showing you that even though you feel all that, everything has an end. It is reminiscent of all bad emotions, but takes your hand and accompanies you through them in the sense that it is a cathartic experience. I believe the creationism of the lyrics goes in that direction. The metaphors don't appear to make sense until they click because you grow on them. It sounds dark, raw, sometimes more so than it actually tries, but if you're in the right mood, you'll end up almost a different person when you're done listening to it.

I found this band when I was 19 and couldn't stop listening to them for a decade. First 3 albums are their best in my opinion. I loved watching your reaction cause it certainly mirrored mine when I first discovered them. Enjoy!

I like how you spend some time "getting into" a space to get the music. Lots of people, specially if they are being critical(wether they realize they are being critical or not) don't realize they just aren't getting music when they are listening, as least not in the way that a large part, if not vast majority of the fandom for a band does. I remember hearing Obstacle 1 on Pandora like 10 years ago and thinking it was a great song and putting it on all my playlists. C'mere would eventually go on them as well, and then I heard Stella was a Diver and was like hell yea this is one of the best songs ever. Oh man and Rest my Chemistry that one is great as well. I've never loved a full album of theirs(I did like this one quite a bit though) but their best work is just top notch. Oh and "Home spun Desperation's Knowing, Inside your Cover's always blown" is likely a reference to self-loathing. What would create more desperation than if you created your own self-hatred(home spun) and it came from inside, because inside you can't hide from how shitty you are are(your cover's always blown.) Lots of their lyrics are essentially poetic ways of saying they hate themselves.

that is a fantastic interpretation of those lyrics! I always struggle with deciphering Interpol lyrics, but I will definitely keep in mind that theme of self-hatred throughout their music in the future

Hey Brad! Loved the intro and the new video format. If you liked this record I HIGHLY recommend you check out Funeral by Arcade Fire. It's like Turn on the Bright Lights but the lyrics are slightly more discernable and the vocals and instrumentation are 10000000% more emotional. It's Turn on the Bright Lights on emotional steroids.

I love every song on this album. Interpol's lyrics are hard to decipher and great once you get an idea of what they're talking about. If you want another widely accepted great album to listen to, you should listen to Pinkerton by Weezer. It's their second album and I think you'd love it.

He couldn't hear his vocals during rehearsal, so his voice evolved like this. Of course he could hear his vocals in the studio, the vocals are recorded apart from the other instruments.

@@ian_5184 In case anybody's familiar with the Danish band Mew, the singer's extremely high-pitched vocals are for the same reason. He can sing pretty normal but you won't hear that on 99.9% of the songs.
