Watch the film Purple Rain. You will be in awe of his musical genius. For his first 5 albums he played all instruments, harmonised, produced, wrote all songs and lyrics, it was him in the recording studio on his own. He then had to get a band to tour. Greatest bandleader also. Enjoy!

@@sallykinley5939 Oké, let's add the other genius side of Prince, mastering all the musical styles to be found in his treasuredome: Soul/disco, rap/hiphop, rock, hardrock, punk, exprerimental, psychedelic, progressive, (ordinary) pop, jazz - loads of jazz, blues, gospel, and ofcourse undefined styles written/composed, arranged, played and produced by the man himself in purple style. People don’t realise how unique and talented he really was because he made everything he did look easy and this effortless in his music was overlooked. He was far ahead of his time. He didn’t give interviews and kept his privacy as much as he could.

Prince was a genius; a musical prodigy & self taught in playing close to 30 instruments. If you love THAT solo, then u MUST see his Purple Rain live performance from Syracuse NY. He absolutely cut LOOSE in that guitar solo. Great reaction to an icon.

Except the "reaction" channels are made to please an audience. You can't be natural when you know you're being filmed, and you're even less natural when you want to please your audience. These channels all look the same because their authors are conditionned to reproduce what they think people want to see. And it works. This is not listenning to music. Remember when you first listenned to Purple Rain you did not pause the music every 10 seconds to inform the World that "this is a guitar, I think I'm gonna like it". Listenning to music is something free, spontaneous and private.

Hey Verdy, first of all I would like to say thank you for sharing your genuine reactions with us. Watching you listen to Purple Rain tripped me back in time to when my first love "Marie" and I were lucky and privileged enough to watch Prince perform live in Glasgow some many moons ago, Marie was a huge Prince fan and convinced me that we should go to his concert, I'm so happy that we did, I can honestly say that it was one of the most beautiful and memorable times of my life, Prince performed like the living Legend that he was, the chap was amazingly talented and all of his support were right on form too. I look forward to sharing more of your musical reactions. Keep it real Lassie, stay strong and resonate. xXx

I know I'm 10 months behind. This is from the Purple Rain movie. The 1985 AMA show he killed it, unreal performance. Also his excellence on the guitar is on display at George Harrisons Hall of Fame induction. He played along with others in tribute but he had the last solo in My Guitar Gently Weeps and it's mind blowing

As good as this is you should watch Prince sing Purple Rain live on the American music awards. He is an unbelievable artist. I “think” my favorite album is Controversy… but then again he has lots of great albums. Please, please keep listening to Prince he is SUCH an incredible artist. His vocal range is amazing and his music style was constantly evolving. If you like guitar listen to his UnderTaker album. He recorded it in one session straight through so it’s more like a concert or jam session. It is about 45 minutes long, you can’t really break it up to do a reaction… well you could but honestly in needs to be listened to in it’s entirety. Original when he dropped it the record label wouldnt release it because they thought he was putting out too much music… as if. But ironically his music was so different on that album much more rock I think it would have brought more fans to him. His record label seemed to just want his pop music. One of the many reasons his stopped calling himself Prince and wrote slave on his face. He honestly saw the same problems artists are having with record labels today…. His music is timeless and relevant yet a perfect time capsule of the 70s, 80s, and 90s… and honestly 2000s. He just put out great music. When a Prince song came on regardless if he was singing you knew immediately Prince was behind it. His sound was incredibly unique to him. He also had these other bands around him that were all part of that time in music. The Time, Jill Jones, Vanity, Vanity 6, Shelia E, Shenna Easton… so many more… there really was something magical about the music he created. Prince also talked a lot about artist and the responsibility they had to put out music with good influences. He talked a lot about how rap could erode black neighborhoods by encouraging kids to live that lifestyle by glamorizing. He grew into a very deep thinking man, very spiritual. Yet when you listen to his early music he was always deeply spiritual. He had a way of being God into his music, when other artists were taking God out of their music. I can remember listening to his music in my room as a teen over and over and over. He was my favorite artist growing up. I loved a lot of different music but I always came back to Prince. I was sad he shut his music down right on the internet. You literally could not hear anything Prince unless you bought it. Until he passed… I think that is why people are just now starting to discover him as a great artist.

Just started watching your reactions and am enjoying your musical journey. There's too much to list about how special a musician, performer and artist he was. There are funny stories like him destroying Jimmy Fallon at ping pong or Charlie Murphy's crew getting schooled on Prince's private basketball court. He was perfection. If you haven't heard, Prince wrote songs for others to make a career on. Sinead O'Connor was known for Nothing Compares to You which he wrote. It is worth a listen, but before he passed, you must hear Chris Cornell's version. Chris had such a hauntingly beautiful voice. RIP to Chris and Prince. Their like shall never be seen again.

The greatest thing about this song is that it is actually recorded from a live performance, the first time they had played it together live on stage I believe. They just did a few things in the studio like cut out one verse that isn’t in the released version and did some guitar overdubs I believe. That performance is here on KZfaq btw. They truly captured lightning in a bottle that night.

You may be interested to know that there is no studio recording of this track. The Master Tapes were recorded by Sony in they're 'Black Truck' mobile rig recording studio at the concert where Prince performed this for the first time ever. It was shortened and 3 overdubs were recorded to replace some minor glitches, but as you hear it here and on the album, it is a one shot live recording from a live show, for the first time before an audience. And that's why he will always be one of the greatest artists of all time.

I remember reading that Prince thought this sounded too much like Journey's "Faithfully" which had come out a couple of years earlier. He sent a copy to them to see what they thought, as he didn't want to get sued. They were flattered, so they gave it their blessing. Now, I can't hear either song without thinking of the other.

Really glad to see your great reaction to this! I was fortunate to see Prince on back-to-back nights on the Purple Rain tour in 1985. I was working at the arena where the concert was held, responsible for preparing the final accounting settlement reports for the tour for those two nights. I went to the show the first night, and after completing the settlement on the second night was able to see most of the rest of the show. "Purple Rain" was his encore, and it was one of the greatest live performances of a song that I ever heard in my 23 years in the concert business. Because of my work I was able to see the soundcheck on the first afternoon. Prince was very quiet that afternoon, and his guitarist Wendy seemed to be the musical director for the band. Again, the concert was phenomenal!! Was also fortunate to see Prince two more times in later years. It was a huge loss when he passed. In all the interviews of his that I saw, he was so passionate about his music and stood up to record companies because of the way they took advantage of artists. Again, really enjoyed your reaction!!!

Somewhere out there is the video recording of the live show where Prince played the song, Purple Rain for the very first time. You can watch in real time how he figured out and came up with that beautiful melodic guitar riff you hear toward the end of the song. There is also another verse in the original version that was left out of the release. This recording came out sounding so good that (after some light editing) it was the version they used on the actual record/single.

Great review! I still get chills up my spine during the guitar solo of this song. If you are looking for classic rock to listen to, I am going to recommend something I would call one of the greatest albums nobody knows about. For me, it ranks up there with Led Zeppelin and Prince and all the greatest rockers. Its an album by Kula Shakur, called "K". It's a fusion of british rock and Indian music. Check out the song "Govinda" to start, and if you like that, you will enjoy the entire album. Its an album that takes you on a journey, kind of like Pink Floyd albums or other artists back when it was about creating an entire story through the music, rather than just singles.... Just discovered your channel today and have enjoyed many of the vids! Thanks for sharing your videos with the world 🙂

As I understand it, the first verse is dedicated to his parents, the second to his love, the third to his band. In the context of the movie, it’s kinda like he sends all his thoughts and prayers to his father, via the power of music. It’s probably not meant to be understood literally.
