"Itching ears" is a reference to the biblical verse talking about the end times where false teachers preach a gospel that is appealing to people because it supports how they choose to live, so "screaming in your itching ears" is about forcing people to hear something that they aren't comfortable with because it gets them out of their comfort zone.

@@breakingaustin It becomes obvious if you listen to the song Cassie off of Flyleaf (2005), or the entire Memento Mori (2009) album. Memento Mori is an artistic saying relating to the inevitability of death that grew alongside Christianity, having a heavy connection to the religion.

I’m not religious, but “itching ears” in the Christian bible refers to someone that seeks a message/doctrine approving their chosen lifestyle, instead of adapting to fit the message. I imagine when she sings about “screaming in your itching ears” she’s either saying she’s delivering the desired message, or trying to get the person to wake up to the good message while they’re stuck looking for their own 🤷🏼♂️

This is nowhere near the only band that is rock music but with a Christian message ;) The Christian rock community is my fam ❤️ Skillet, Disciple, Seventh Day Slumber, POD, The Protest, Spoken, Love and Death, Zahna, Fireflight, I could go on and on about so many bands. (I actually write a weekly news update on this community for a Christian online magazine). There is also Christian metal and rap as well.

I can’t say I dislike contemporary Christian music, as some of it is good and uplifting, but I’ve gotta say that I am a big fan of Christian Rock. It gets the blood pumping and delivers the message, yet at the same time, it reaches a broader audience/fan base - which is pretty genius if you think about it.

Sadly, Cassie’s family was given incorrect information. By the time the truth was aired, thee was a juggernaut built around the story and people not affiliated with her family continue to push the tale. Unfortunately, this is misinformation being cemented as “reality” regarding Columbine is so pervasive and really problematic because the narrative has had a direct impact about how mass shootings have developed in America.

She's sick because she was addicted to drugs and couldn't break out. "I'm infected where I live. Let me live without this selfishness" she is saying her upbringing and where she came from steered her to drugs and she knows it's selfish but she's basically begging for help in this song because she can't do it.

That's a interpretation of the song. A good one. If someone isn't a Christian they can certainly relate it to just drugs, sure. But while she did do drugs, for me the song goes far deeper than drugs when you know her entire life story and that she's a Christian and hearing the term itching ears be used in the song. Itching ears is used in the Bible referring to people who will not listen to sound doctrine (the truth within the Bible) but rather will turn their "itching ears" to people who will already confirm things they are doing, even though it's sinful. This whole world is in a state of sickness. So yes, it can be about a physical sickness of drug addiction certainly. Or it can be a overall spiritual sickness of sin (which includes the bondage of addiction too).

A lot of Flyleaf’s lyrics and songs were about her discovery in religion. She was to the verge of suicide when her eyes were opened. Religion actually saved her life.

Lacey Sturm* (Originally Lacey Mosley before marriage). First, everyone should look up her testimony because it is the most amazing thing ever. She even wrote three books on her life story. Flyleaf was a rock band with Christian lyrics but not under the Christian genre. (though they went on Christian tours and their c.d's were in the Christian stores). They (like Switchfoot) didn't want the label because they didn't want non Christians thinking they couldn't relate to their music. However, Lacey is now in a new "band" named after herself (Lacey Sturm) with her husband and that is under the Christian genre.

Once I got to the bridge: "You sink into my clothes, this invasion makes me feel worthless, hopeless, sick." For me, the rest of the song just became about sexual assault and trauma, being stuck near your abuser. It's also kind of an anthem because of how powerful her voice is. She empowers me as well.

You can definitely look at it that way. Flyleaf is a Christian band and this song is about the struggle of sin. As humans it is our nature to crave evil. So once you start seeking God you begin fighting against your very nature. It's a battle that can open you up to feelings of guilt, shame, worthlessness, hopelessness. Feeling sick. The Bible talks about being so full of sin that your clothes become contaminated. That's why we love Jesus as much as we do. Because he comes to cleanse us and make us new

This is such a great band. They are a Christian rock band and their songs are about God and just things that really hit home. To me this song is her saying she doesn't wanna be a selfish person, that she wants to have the fullest life possible, and she wants to be the best version of herself. Ok I was reading the comments and (what I saw) none could explain the lyrics. So, here goes the explanation. I Hope you read it. For Christians, sin is a sickness, so what she says "I'm so sick" that means she is full of sin. Then she mentions she feels emty and full of selfishness, and she is looking for a way to live those feelings behind. "I'm so sick Infected with where I live Let me live without this Empty bliss Selfishness" Then on, the song is a cry for her life of sin. Her demons (sins) accuse her for everything she has done (those are the inching ears) and suddenly she crys out for an exit "If you want more of this We can push out, sell out, die out So you'll (Shut up, shut up, shut up) And stay sleeping With my screaming in your itching ears" And finally, there comes God (the Holly Ghost) and comforts her. God heard her cry and comes to her, she feels worthless of that feeling, but at the same time it feels good. She feels loved, so loved that she realizes about how sick she really is. "You sink into my clothes This invasion makes me feel Worthless, hopeless, sick"

I did not know there was a metaphor, that's interesting. But as Flyleaf was a band of Christians with overt Christian themes (listen to Beautiful Bride and Cassie, among others) I'm assuming itching ears is used in the biblical context here. Itching ears is used in the Bible referring to people who will not listen to sound doctrine (the truth within the Bible) but rather will turn their "itching ears" (or other versions say tickling ears) to people who will already confirm things they are doing, even though it's sinful. (2 Timothy 4:3) So basically she is saying that no matter how hard she tries to get people to see the truth, they will continue to stay "asleep" and "sick" in their own ignorance. But I mean, I can always ask Lacey herself. She's quite accessible online and I've also met her 4 times.

That isn’t the metaphor .... the correct saying is “my ears are burning” or more accurately you ask someone “where your ears burning, because we were just talking about you.” And it is an idiom, not a metaphor.
