Welcome to the world of Pentatonix 😁😁😁 No going back from this point on. 😉 I always love to see it when people realise for the first time they are doing it acapella. 😂 Yes...that's what they do...no instruments, no backup tracks, just their voices and bodies. There is no one like them out there. From time to time they use a cello as the guy on the left, Kevin the Beatboxer, is an incredible musician as well. You should definitely check out more of their stuff as there are soooooo many great songs to explore. They do perform for almost 10 years already and never disappointed. Maybe Hallelujah would be a good choice to do next. They have a great live version out too. I suggest do the video first and the live one right after so you can see they are even more amazing live 😊 But whatever you choose they will blow your mind constantly 😉 Oh and btw. they changed 1 member in 2017. The guy on the left, Matt, replaced Avi, the one with the beard you will see in earlier videos. They are mostly doing the bass parts in their arrangements. Avi started a solo carrier and it's worth checking him out too. 💚 Sorry, this got very long 😳 But again welcome to the rabbit hole 😂

The moment you realised that it's all them (acapella) was beautiful :) And yes, they ALWAYS do their music acapella. There are less than 10 songs from their almost 10 year career (so far) where they use an instrument. And they do all kinds of genres of music: pop, rock, r&b, electro, dubstep, country, gospel, hymns etc. As far as covers vs original music - they do both! They actually have a new album of all original music coming out in february (it was supposed to come out this year, but covid delayed everything). They've sold millions of albums, and tours all over the world (when we aren't under lockdown of course) - they also have 3 Grammy awards. The people in other of their solos in this video: - Scott: tall, blonde baritone. He has a huge vocal range, so while he can sing very high, he also covers the bass line when their bass singer has the lead. (like you noticed, when he was "humming"). - Mitch: shorter guy with (usually) black hair. He changes his look all the time. He's a counter tenor, so he can sing VERY high, as you'll see when you watch songs like Hallelujah. - Matt: the black guy in the white jacket. He's the groups bass singer. He is the newest member as he joined in late 2017, when their original bass singer (Avi Kaplan) left. - Kirstin: the only female member of the group. mezzo-soprano. for a long time she didn't have as much self confidence as the others, so we didn't get to hear her take the lead all that often, but in the last couple of years she's really coming into her own. - Kevin: the beatboxer. he's the foundation for everything they do. he also has a beautiful tenor voice, and he plays cello in a handful of songs. - Ben Bram: the "6th member of PTX". Ben has been with the group from the very beginning in 2011, and is their co-arranger on most of their music

Not quite ALWAYS acapella. Kevin (the beat boxer) is a multi-instrumentalist, and he has played the cello in a very few of their songs. They don't hide it though -- when he does, he is front and center. Kevin was actually found by the rest of the group via a viral video, where he was playing the cello and beat boxing at the same time. He calls it "celloboxing". (If that is not amazing enough, his degree is in East Asian Studies, and he speaks fluent Mandarin.) One of the videos where Kevin plays the cello also had a guest artist playing the violin. I can't remember her name (Lindsay?), but she dances while she plays. (I just noticed at the end of your comment you do say Kevin has played the cello in a very few videos. Sorry I missed it.)

lol it's okay. (I did mention at the start of my comment that there are about 10 songs where they use an instrument.) And yes, it's mostly Kevin playing cello: Say Something, Perfect, Cologne, Dancing on My Own, Shallow Then there are the two collaborations with Lindsey Stirling where Kevin plays cello and she plays violin: Radioactive and Papaoutai And the newest track to feature instruments is an original PTX song: "Thank You" - it features Kevin on cello and Scott on piano. I've probably forgotten one or two tracks, but these are the ones I remember right now. (I know there are versions of certain songs with instruments backing them up - like the versions of Hallelujah and Mary Did You Know where they are backed by The String Mob - but I'm not really counting them as the full acapella versions came first)

Great reaction...now you've awaken from living under a rock. Pentatonix has been around for 9 years after winning an Acapella competition on a TV Show (Sing Off), and have revolutionized this genre. Now to blow your mind...they have their own KZfaq channel, with over 400 videos; well over 18 MILLION (!) subscribers; 7.5 BILLION (!) views; 3 Grammy awards; multiple platinum albums; many concerts and 4 world tours all with sellout audiences. The beatboxer is a musical genius who also sings, plays 4-5 instruments, speaks a couple of languages (Mandarin is one of them). The back story is amazing and all 5 off them (Avi, the bass was with them for nearly 7 years, replaced by Matt)...every one of them are super, super talented and arguably the best singing group on the planet. Some classics to start off with...Hallelujah (almost 600 Million views); Bohemian Rhapsody; Daft Punk (1st Grammy); Evolution of Michael Jackson (shows off talent)...enjoy the Journey !! BTW, once you learn their names, you will have become one of the millions of PENTAHOLICs !!

They have originals too, but they got famous for taking almost any song & making it a capella. 95% of their songs are completely a capella, with a small number having the beatboxer do something he seems to be the 1st to do: celloboxing- playing cello while beatboxing. They are world famous, being one of the main reasons many have gotten back into a capella music in the last decade. They won season 3 of the show The Sing Off, which started them getting noticed, but the record company dropped them right after they won, suddenly deciding that "it wouldn't be profitable" to invest in an a capella group. Everyone was like "WTF??? Why were you the main sponsor of the show then?" I think the company thought they were going to invest a tiny amount in some group that would do nothing but make a few Christmas albums & sell them via internet to a capella fans only for a fair profit. They weren't prepared for a real band that wanted to do the same thing a band with instruments does. Well the group used what fame they got from the show & started with just homemade videos posted online until they got enough attention to get a new contract with a different company. Then they had backing to start touring & making full albums.

Yes, they seldom use an instrument. They have collaborated with Lindsay Sterling for a couple songs, and she plays the violin. They also have used a cello that the beat boxer plays. They also sing their own originals, but have primarily done cover songs...but most of the time their covers rival the original. Hallelujah is a definite listen with over 560 million listens, or if you want some original music try Happy Now, or Sing. They are also the Christmas album group, having released a number of highly successful Christmas Albums. They will not release any song from a studio that they cannot reproduce live on stage. This is a great group to listen to Liam, with very faithful fans, called Pentaholics, and you will find that they sing most every genre. They have won three Grammys, one for their Daft Punk Medly, ( they shot the video in a kitchen and they spent $400 dollars creating the video. ) one for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, and one with Dolly Parton for Jolene. I urge you to go down this rabbit hole, you’ll be immensely satisfied.

Welcome to PTX! We Pentaholics agree with you that the world doesn’t take them seriously enough. Their sound is to be treasured. They have redefined acapella for the entire music industry. Where are they from? Many reactors say they are aliens b/c what they do seems impossible. But literally, the trio (Kirstin, Scott, Mitch) are from Arlington, Texas where they were friends & in choirs together in middle & high school. It all began with The Sing Off season 3 (spoiler alert) which they won in 2011! Since then they’ve released covers, Christmas & original music!! It’s a great time to be a Pentaholic as they’ve dropped a LOT of new music in 2020 & their much anticipated original album releases 2-12-2021. Looking forward to your journey!

Try 'Hallelujah' next. And note that song has 570 million views. Then 'Imagine', followed by 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. There are songs where Kevin (beatboxer) plays a cello, such as 'Say Something' or collaborations like 'Radioactive' with Lindsey Sterling. For the most part, they are pure acapella with little intervention other than perhaps reverb. Live versions are available but most are not good audio; Hallelujah has a live version that is freaking amazing.

For the most part they are considered an a capella band (no instruments) but they do have a handful of songs with the cello played by the beatboxer who is able to play it and beatbox at the same time, with a couple collabing Lindsey Stirling. On their recent Christmas album there is one track that also has cello and for the first time piano (I assume played by Scott, the blonde guy). They are evolving as a band for sure.

The vast majority of their songs are covers but they put out an original album (which is absolutely great) in 2015 and are going to release another original album in Feb 2021. The beat boxer (Kevin) also plays the cello and beat boxes at the same time (Celloboxing) and the songs off the top of my head that have the cello are Shallow and Say Something. The guy who sang first (the tall guy) is Scott he is the baritone, the guy in the white jacket is the bass singer his name is Matt, the guy with the longer hair next to Scott is Mitch he is the counter-tenor he does the higher singing, the girls name is Kirstin she is the mezzo-soprano.

Great reaction, always fun to see new folks discover Pentatonix (PTX for short). Especially when they get mega-blown away and gobsmacked! You are going to be flooded by avid PTX fans (who call themselves Pentaholics) who love watching reactions. You will get many suggestions from their extensive catalog, both covers and originals. Frankly, pick ANYTHING they do and you won’t be disappointed. A little background on PTX, of the five of them, three of them, the tall blonde guy, Scott Hoying (baritone), the young lady, Kirstin (or Kirstie) Maldonado (mezzo-soprano), and the guy with the dark hair and high voice, Mitch Grassi (counter-tenor), are originally from Arlington Texas and have known each other since childhood and sang together in high school. In 2011, NBC had a singing competition called “The Sing Off” where a-cappella groups competed against each other and one was eliminated each week. Scott wanted to compete, but they needed 5 people, so they met a fourth member, Avi Kaplan, a classically trained bass singer, through a friend and he joined (he is in many videos and has a beard, but personal reasons caused him to amicably leave the group in 2017). Before Avi left, he helped find his replacement, an equally talented base singer, Matt Sallee, who is in the current group in this video. That has been the only change in the lineup. If you begin to watch their earlier videos, you will barely recognize Mitch, he lost a lot of weight, and changes his look often, as does Kirstie. Scott discovered their fifth member, beatboxer/cellist/vocalist (tenor) Kevin Olusola, on KZfaq where he was “celloboxing” or beat boxing while playing the cello. Because of schedules, they didn’t meet until just a few days before the competition began, yet they went on to win the show. They won a recording contract as part of the show prize, but 2 weeks into it, the label dropped them feeling like an a-cappella group was not marketable. Refusing to be discouraged, PTX began a KZfaq channel and from that channel garnered millions of world-wide fans, went on to world tours, put out multiple albums, including wildly successful Christmas albums, hit the #1 spot on the Billboard chart, almost always in the top ten, and have to date won 3 Grammy Awards. They do all their own beats. No instruments are used with the exception of several videos where Kevin plays the cello and some collaborations with violinist Lindsey Sterling. They do not use multi-tracking, auto-tune or any studio tricks. Everything they have on video, they perform exactly the same live. All their Sing Off performances are on KZfaq, watching them will give you their story, and show you how they have evolved into, IMO, the best a-cappella group in the world right now. Welcome to the PTX experience.

GREAT first reaction to Pentatonix. You got the name right at the end of each try. Also known as PTX. They were in Germany (I think) on a world tour when covid-19 hit. They have been isolating in their homes until very recently. PTX has been dropping new cover videos since July from their homes. Five from their new EP "Home". Then "Mad World" just cause it is. "Amazing Grace" from their Christmas album "We Need a Little Christmas" that dropped last week Nov 13. And "Happy Now" , an original from their second original LP due to drop Feb 12, 2021. That is their new stuff. Of their older stuff, Hallelujah (most views), Daft Punk (medley) arrangement grammy #1, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies arrangement grammy #2 are are awesome. Bohemian Rhapsody is unbelievable. Or you can go back to their beginning in 2011 when they won season 3 of The Sing Off, an a capella competition. And then there are the covers done sitting on a couch. 2011 - ???. Their "Evolution of" medleys are all excellent - Music, Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, Rhianna... what am I missing?

Love your reaction and you said their name right. Welcome to the world of Pentatonix or PTX. They have a very loyal following that go by Pentaholics. I myself am one. Check out their original video of Hallelujah and then watch the live version on their Christmas special and compare. They sound the same. They started on the singing competition The Sing-off and won. They are...in order of singing Scott, Mitch, Matt, Kristen and the beat boxer is Kevin. They had an original member Avi who left due to personal reasons and he found Matt to replace him (He is in Hallelujah and is amazing). Kevin & Avi also do solo stuff which is awesome. Matt is the base and when he sings Scott steps in. They do mostly covers but have original content out too. They have a Daft Punk Medley for which they won a few Grammys. My faves are Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Say Something, Mary Did You Know and they do a version of Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive with the violinist Lindsey Stirling(You can see Kevin play the cello and beatbox at the same time, very cool). Glad to see this and I really hope you do some more reactions to them.

I love seeing the awakening of a new Pentaholic 😂 they are amazing and have introduced the world to a new style of a capella, each of them individually are so incredibly talented that it’s hard not to be blown away when they come together. Scott, Mitch & Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty lol) have been besties since school and know each other so well it’s almost like they share the same brain. There’s also no ego in this group, they completely support each other and you can hear that when they are doing these incredibly complex arrangements, someone once said they sing beautifully together but also know how to get out of each other’s way. Suggestions are: (older songs with their original bass Avi) ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Imagine’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Daft Punk Medley’ (they won a Grammy for that arrangement) and their collab with Todrick Hall ‘The Wizard of Ahhs’, (newer stuff with their new bass Matt) ‘Mad World’, ‘Come Along’, ‘New Rules x Are You That Somebody’, (original songs) ‘Love Again’, ‘Sing’, ‘Happy Now’. You could literally pick anything though and it will be spectacular lol welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole, you’ll love every second of it 😁

Ok I have a request that I ask all reactors but rarely get (haha) but I’ll ask anyway: Would love to see you react to their “Daft Punk” official music video AND then immediately react to their “daft punk off mic private performance” in the same video (or one right after the other). It’s just fun for people to be able to see how they’re able to translate their studio sound to a live performance and still nail it :)

(Also does some solo stuff that has to be seen to be believed.) He also has a beautiful voice. You should check out their latest cover of Amazing Grace. They also do original music- Happy Now and Be My Eyes being some of their latest originals. This is also the cover that hooked me and reeled me in- so beware, they’re addictive!

Oh welcome, new Pentaholic! Yes they do a lot of covers but they have their own originals too. They've won 3 Grammies thus far, won the Sing Off, redefined Christmas music and A Capella forever, and normally do not have instruments other than themselves. Kevin Olusola, the beatboxer, also plays cello and does the 2 together on his own channel. From left to right you have Matt Sallee (bass), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano), Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (counter tenor) and Kevin Olusola. They do incredible things to music, picking apart songs and putting them back together in such a way that 5 people end up sounding like a full band with instruments, effects and vocals. They can also make themselves sound like a full on choir :) Keep looking them up, check out Hallelujah (This is before Matt's time as bass, and included their original bass Avi Kaplan who has moved onto his own solo career and is phenomenal in his own right), Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone, ALL of their Christmas music, Mad World, Can You Feel the Love Tonight and many many more. This is the prettiest and most wholesome rabbit hole you can fall down on youtube. :)

Yes, they do this with all of their songs. Every now and then they use a cello or violin. They’re EXTREMELY talented, not only with their voices, but as writers, choreographers, arrangers, etc. God has blessed them with an extraordinary amount of talent. Please continue to react to them. Left to right: Matt (bass), Kristen or Kirstie (soprano/alto/whatever they need), Scott (baritone, but again, can sing whatever), Mitch (tenor, but same as the others except for one thing... he can sing higher than lots of sopranos!), and Kevin (beat boxer, cellist, tenor, and so much more). The bass used to be a guy named Avi but he had to leave the band for family health reasons and picked Matt to replace him. The original trio who’ve been together since they were kids are Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch. Avi and Kevin were added for “The Sing Off”, the show they participated on to win a Sony recording contract. Sony promptly dumped them so they turned to KZfaq with their videos and won 3 Grammys for “Daft Punk.” It all keeps going from there! Please keep reacting to Pentatonix (you were saying it right)!

One of my guilty pleasures is watching people discover PTX for the first time and realize they are acapella (no instruments used unless shown in their video of Kevin the beatboxer cello-boxing). Aside from the suggestions mentioned by others, I love some of their other ones that aren't as popular such as their La La Latch mashup (cover of La La and Latch by Naughty Boy and Disclosure both songs featuring Sam Smith), their originals Run To You and their latest cover they dropped last week of Amazing Grace (just stunning). Just an fyi, be careful with copyright blocks, their newer videos have been getting blocked however if you pause frequently or find a way to partially block their video (like with your channel logo or something during your editing process from what I have seen done by other reactors you should be fine). Their older videos don't have that issue from what I can tell. Thanks for this reaction, new Subscriber to join in your PTX rabbit hole journey. Enjoy 😊

Welcome aboard the SS Pentatonix, or SS PTX if youre in a hurry. Weve been expecting you. Because anyone who listens to these guys can never go back. You will find there are many ports of call on this journey. They have won 3 granmys, was nominated again just this last year and I fully expect for them to be nominated again next year. They've collaborated with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Dolly Parton, the last of which their duet won a grammy. Their multiplatinum, and just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They sing the national anthem at the equivalent of the college football super bowl, and also just appeared on The Masked Singer. They are with the 5 billion club of views on youtube, and it's by far the most recognized and most popular of all the acapella groups out there today. There are others for example home Free and voiceplay, feel free to check them out to cuz they're all good. But I am still Pentatonix all day as they are in a level above everybody else. Ptx was the first of the acapella bands in modern-day, and without them bring it back to the mainstream none of the other acapella bands would even have been able to have a career because acapella was considered a dead genre and would never sell records. PTX took that and did it their way by releasing songs on KZfaq and went from there into the stratosphere. They still struggle to be played on the radios I still not everybody knows their work that's for the longest time they were just thought of as just a Christmas group. But they're slowly breaking out of that. I tell people just keep requesting their songs at your local radio station until somebody starts to play it because they have a vast body of work. Unlike all the other acapella groups out there, there is not a genre they can't cover. R&b to EDM, soul to gospel, jazz to pop, classical to country, rap to a little hard rock. They aren't afraid to try anything and they kill everything they try. They do covers and originals, although yeah they're most notable for their covers.Though us pentaholics call them upgrades not covers. would suggest you start with the earlier works, and you'll meet the original bass singer, Avi, who then was replaced by Matt that you see here in this video, the third one to sing. So I would suggest you listen to hallelujah, which for many is there first song introduction to this group, daft punk, dance of the sugar plum fairy (those last 2 won grammys), and one of my personal favorites and one that's kind of underrated White Winter Hymnal. Sit back close your eyes and enjoy the journey!

83M views is just a drop in the bucket for them. Their cover of Hallulujah has nearly 500M views. Their Daft Punk mashup 338M (their first Grammy) Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (their second Grammy) is a song without words. Their cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody has 107M. And their third Grammy is a duet with the legendary Dolly Parton. This past week they released their Christmas album and the first video, Amazing Grace, has over 2M days in five days. Yes, they're are INCREDIBLE.

One of many things I find amazing about them is the fact that Scott (the one in the middle) had tried out for American Idol multiple times before Pentatonix and never made it through. He brings together a group and tries out for The Sing-off, an a capella show. They won and have achieved a lot of success. They've won the Grammy and are one of the best, if not the best, a capella groups out there. Just because he never gave up on his dreams and have now achieved more than he ever imagined possible.

They do mostly covers but they have amazing originals as well. And they sing a capella (using only their voices to make music) on every song they sing. Sometimes the beat-boxer, Kevin, (far right) plays the cello too. I've been a fan since they began in 2011 so it's always nice to see someone react to them for the first time with such enthusiasm. One of the songs you should definitely react to is their Daft Punk medley which won them their first grammy in 2015. They have a new bass singer now but they're just as amazing. Enjoy :)

LOL! I loved your reaction. You're right...no instruments other than their voices and clapping hands and stomping. Quick primer: As you looked at them in this video, the first singer who sang (middle) was Scott. He sings the lead most of the time, and is a baritone/tenor who can sing down into upper bass and also pretty high in the tenor range. I'd guess probably about 4 octave range. The 2nd singer, Mitch, to the right of Scott as you look at the screen, is a counter-tenor and can sing super high soprano range notes, but also has a huge range and can go down into mid to upper baritone range. The 3rd singer on the far left is Matt. He's their bass. He replaced the bass (Avi) that you see on Hallelujah; the guy with the beard. Kirstin (also with a huge range) can comfortably sing alto to soprano and has a strong but clear voice. The last guy, Kevin, is the beat-boxer, but he's much more than that. He joined the group after they saw a viral video of him playing a cello and beat-boxing at the same time. He is a classically trained cellist and saxophone player, but you can find some KZfaq videos of him doing covers in his studio where he uses looping to lay down an entire track, cello, keyboards, drums, beat-box sounds and vocals. Kevin Olusola is what you would find it under. Look at 'Down' and 'Sign of the Times.' Also, you'll sometimes here him singing backing vocals on Pentatonix songs when he's not beat-boxing, and on a few he sings a verse or part of a verse solo. He has a super clear tenor voice and a really good baritone voice too.
