I am hard of hearing, and I appreciate the cops taking this seriously. My hearing loss is not profound, but unless someone talks to me clearly and at a slightly raised volume, I can't understand. I know they are saying something, but not always what. I had a severe ear infection when I was 12 years old, and my ear drums, in both ears, burst up to 6 times. I have a good amount of scar tissue on them, and this prevents me from hearing some sounds. I was raised by a mother who had nerve deafness in both ears, and I learned to speak loudly and clearly. So I often times talk loudly. I'm not upset. I am hard of hearing. LOL.

I am a retired Police officer, and although I had returned to college to receive more ASL training as a police officer, I used very rudimentary ASL that I learned as a youth to communicate with my aunt. Since my retirement, I have conducted training for police departments regarding contact and communication with DHH community. I am always happy to see these videos that are not "Anti-Police" and serve to teach us (Police officers) . I was the only officer in my department that knew any ASL. It was good that I was present on several police calls for service or they could have turned out very bad.

Great work! I am a deaf educator and also deaf myself. I think all first responders should be aware of this video. The persons responsible for its creation did a great job in getting the facts right. I commend you!

I am hard of hearing. Due to chronic mastoiditis in both ears, severe nerve damage and loss of both ear drums, I also have balance issues and slur my speech. So I really appreciate this.

Thank you SO much for posting this! I wish this would have helped my Uncle who was deaf. he had unknowingly walked onto Private Property (There was NO sign posted where he was). When the Sheriff approached him, of COURSE he didn't hear the officer, & he was ROUGHLY handled & treated! RIP Gary Cook (my uncle)!

Studies have shown that Deaf drivers are as good or better than hearing drivers, due to their use of scanning and visual cues to compensate, and less likely to be drive distracted (like talking on the phone, or wearing headphones, etc). read.ideafnews. com/2013/03/nad-deaf-truck-drivers-are-safe-drivers-dot-says/

Police officers, firefighters, and first responders have also gained. Those quickly that you are hard-of-hearing or a deaf person, and then he or her has communication. One of the things I think we should address is the difference to learn sign language so they can communicate with this individual.

remember from video the indian young girl has been her best friend, he is artist and deaf unfortunealy he had died from gunfire the cops. The cops yelled him, he hadn't hear after cops yelling, then he hadn't a idea he turns from back and looks suddenly two Cops there, Cops yelled "Drop off, Knife" and again yelled same times, he moved this finger of the ear, suddenly Cops fired him , he was dead. What is support to clue the deaf man??

Very interesting.. I must have an interpreter because i am profoundly deaf. Police caught me for speeding and i told them i am deaf. Some of communication to write on the paper..

I'm heard of hearing(severe sensory neural hearing loss in both ears) and I used to get bullied a lot(thank God that school is over) people would whisper behind my back thinking that I can not hear them.they also would say things that they think of as a joke but were actually really mean.school is a big anxiety problem for me because of how people treat deaf and hard of hearing people

TheDev....I get you. I was the same way. I had a severe ear infection when I was 12 that nearly killed me, and did damage to both eardrums. 10% hearing loss might not seem much to other people, but it can prevent me from hearing what someone is saying clearly. When you have to tell someone..."I can hear you, but I don't understand what you are saying. Please talk more clearly" you can get people then treating you like you are an idiot. I was raised by a mother who had nerve deafness in both ears, she wore hearing aids, and the moment those were seen people treated her like she was an idiot. It's very distressing to people who are, often, above average intelligence. My mother and I used to collect antique dictionaries for the fun of seeing what old words used to be used but aren't anymore, and she and I read constantly. The older I get the worse the hearing problems are. My daughter gets slightly irritated when she is trying to tell me something, and I tell her that some words come out sounding like she's got mush in her mouth. LOL. Maybe someday we can fix all of these problems with little or nor cost, but till then we just gotta do our best to live in a hearing world.

Deaf people aren't disabled! They're more capable than most hearing people I know! I hate it when hearing people judge, take pity on, make fun of them. They're just like you and me! So what, they can't hear. They express themselves with a BEAUTIFUL language using expressive motions with their body language and hand motions. Most hearing people "can't be bothered" to learn that unless they know a deaf person that they have to communicate with. As a hearing person, I say rock on to the deaf community! I have so much pride for you!

+Abstractum Noumenon No it really isn't. A disability means you are unable to enact a certain facet of existence. Hearing is simply a means of communication. If a deaf person is still able to communicate, they are not disabled. Thus, if they can sign, write, or even lip read (*cringe*) then they can communicate. Thus, they are not disabled.

saying that a person has a disability does not mean that they're inferior, a person with prosthetic could in theory do everything a normal person do, hike a mountain, run, etc... but this does not mean that they're not disabled. In italian we use the term "differently abled" ( i don't know if this makes any sense in english

Police are trained to watch HANDS. Deaf use Sign language(many do)...ok do we see any place where cultural conflicts could occur. Police trump deaf in public-simply so they DON'T get shot! Once on way to hospital, or arrest the fields level...__BUT nothing stops EMS workers from calling Interpreters to the scene of the situation. Hand movement is always a red flag of danger for police officers.....CAll an interpreter..by now your dispatch should have a list of qualified interpreters or agencies- many COULD respond to the scene with POLICE ASST.

Actually a lot of HOH individuals know ASL it’s just frowned upon by deaf community to use ASL since HOH isn’t deaf … I actually got yelled at by a deaf woman for using written communication rather than verbally communicating and using ASL with a friend of mine who is hearing ….

The slow speaks (A) help mara hear goals in what the persona says. Don't skip the siblings of deaf & hard of Hearing SEE: LATCHKEY KIDS who we're raised as ears to help single parents. I can hear good. However, the rise & call affect our ability to STAY at points when points are piled in before xe- the ears - can address the first important points. And, with hard of Hearing, EVERY point matters to the Hearing who have the work of interpreting despite our privatest ( necessary Times. ) A horse trainer is a great guide . Slow. Quiet is good for Hearing, but limit points to our ability to respond or, 'hello' sneaks up on everybody in meantimes. Because... A target is possibly ' ---- the boot up given which would save a Second necessary, fault has distance of TIME. Hours between don't always do. Life makes 'necessary' a long word if 'air'.

Now, when you drive you have to be able to hear sirens and other hazards. And also driving while talking on the phone, which everybody does, or wearing head phones will get you a ticket. When I drove semi's commercially I had to get a DOT physical every year and pass a hearing test and if not ware a hearing aid to bring you up to standards. What is the situation with deaf people driving? I'm curious.

Deaf people just have to pass the driving test and the vison test. There's also flashing sirens so we usually notice them. I was actually the first person to react to an ambulance while everyone didn't see them until the ambulance was right behind them. Plus most hearing people don't hear the siren when they're in their car since 1)the car sometimes blocks the sound from outside and 2) they could be listening to the radio .

I'm hard of hearing and I almost never hear sirens and nor do my hearing friends. There's a reason why they have really bright flashing lights, same with road construction, they don't have sirens but they have signs and lights.

If the deaf community wants the hearing to communicate better they too have to try & learn to communicate with more than signs. Hearing people do need to learn signs but deaf people need to learn to write for the hearing as well. You can't expect one to do all the learning. I'm learning sign language but I'm still far from being able to hold a complex conversation but I'll try, but for me to learn I need someone willing to learn the way I communicate as well or we aren't going to get very far.

I'm mild/moderate, but man masks have REALLY made it hard for me to understand people. I am far from an anti-masker, quite the opposite, but it has really shown me just how much I rely on seeing peoples mouths and full facial expressions to understand what they are saying. I used to think it was hard when people had a lot of facial hair: nothing compared to masks.

Should they learn Spanish, French, German, etc also? It's impossible for officers to learn and know every language a person speaks. A few signs for important situations(Are you okay?, stop, etc.) would be a good idea but expecting them to be fluent in ASL is unreasonable IMO. Have you seen how much material has to be covered at the average police academy?

if only King County would do this. I have issues with the Federal Way and Kent officers cause they assume im a threat if i reach for my remote to my hearing aides. With out it i can not hear them worth shit.

also include about d eaf blind and those with dev disabilities including rare disorders such as schizencephaly.. people often dont know or understand about the disabilities in helping the person who needs help. if officer know asl and have paper pen handy then it is easy understand what you are trying to tell them. all officers including fire depts in all states should learn ASL and how to communicate with deaf and hoh and deaf blind using tactile sign language.

A great video to present to all police, sherriff, and fire departments in the nation. One thing I want to point out is that PSE, SEE, and Cued Speech is NOT a language as you stated. These are sign systems, they are the tools to learn how to speak and write English. These needs to be removed. ASL is recognized as a language. Thank you for making the wonderful video.

One night when I walked out from bar (IPA beer) that only I had a pint to drank. Did 1/4 left in pint glass. Anyway, I was very tired and on the way to sleep at home. But a cop brake over here and he jumped then got my arms to cuffed, no idea why he did for no reason. Tried to tell him to know I'm deaf. He just ignored me and beat my face on trunk of cop car 3 times. Also, my wrist were so hard tightly bad. He seems don't care and did put me in jail one night. I was plan to sue him! So, Lt cop warned to the dumb cop and did dropped the court charges. I came to court and found out charged dropped!!! But after all since I seen the dumb cop who may never come to me ever again!! That's great!! They(any cops) were feared of me for being sue for no reasons?? Good and stay away from me lol!!

I have Muscular Dystrophy and I don't like those words either I know what you are saying too as I have friends who are deaf or hard of hearing. just seem something we all need to work together to stop people from using those words. I hope I didn't offend anyone here by saying this as that was not my goal.

deaf tv should more often show how deaf culture and doctors must clear explain not one word more than explain and accept interpreter doctors most abuse office wow i have experience what kind doctors or hospital or police , they learn their jobs accept deaf culture even news did not closed caption warning weather live with mouth talk not closed caption many things here behind should follow ada law

this is the biggest bullshit propaganda. im noy say that the content of what there saying but rather we alll know this video probably was required of them to be made after multiple events in which cops beat or killed someone because they just acted and didnt think that maybe someone cant hear them. my son is deaf and my biggest fear for him is having to deal with police.
