First Ride: 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200 GT Pro 4K
I've been a 1200/1250 GS owner for the last 9 years. I've tried other similar bikes, but so far none have made it into my garage.
This video is a bit longer than usual, I've put chapters in so you don't have to watch it all.
Normally, my first ride videos are what I think about a bike. This one is a little different as I'm also trying to answer the 'is this the replacement for my GS?' question. #spoileralert, it's very good! (But so is the GS...)
I suppose I could have put some sort of leading statement about GS vs Tiger in the title, but that's a bit click-baity, and isn't really my thing.
Take a look and see what you think. And if you're in the market for a large capacity adventure bike, the Tiger 1200 should definitely be on your list.
Thanks for watching.

Excellent review and comparison. I rode both the GS and 1200 GT PRO last week. My findings were same as yours. It rides and handles like a smaller bike. I think it's a lot more fun to ride than the GS. I took 3 rides and played with the suspension settings. They stiffened/softened the ride, but didn't improve fork dive. Changing the way I ride by using more rear brake as well as engine braking helped. But honestly, I think I was riding the bike harder into turns and braking harder during my test than I would normally. I don't think the dive would be an issue normally. The bike handled corners and bumps great!

Thanks Max. I plan to have more of a play with the suspension on the Rally Pro when it comes in. I’ll see if I can do anything about the fork dive, but as you say, perhaps you just have to ride differently. All my other bikes have a conventional fork, so I guess the GS just let’s me be lazy with the back brake!

You’re welcome, and please pass on my apologies to your wife. (You might enjoy it though!) It might come down to cost. Even though the bikes are priced about the same, last time I changed mine, BMW offered me £1000 more for my old one, excluding accessories, and offered to move everything over to the new bike for free (spots, rear vario topbox bracket, Wunderlich risers and screen wing) and I already had the luggage. Triumph could only offer me the book value, with all the accessories, so the difference was about £2k. Both bikes are really good, so I’m sure either would be fine. #firstworldproblems

I really appreciate you comparing this to your GS. I have recently decided that a bigger bike is in my future. This looks like a very sweet 1200cc, with a light bike feel. Here in the U.S dealers do not allow test rides, so it will be hard to do a proper comparison. I recently found, on-line, a 2010 R1200 GS with less than 6,000 miles on it. The asking price is $1100 U.S. Thinking hard about snapping it up, and selling my old KLR. Also, I am amazed by the beauty of the landscape in your Peak District. Happy Trails

After 14 years of GS and 3 GS's, the last one a 1200GS 2016 model, decided to make the switch after a test drive with the Tiger. I've always been very satisfied with the GS, but I thought it was time to try something different. After long hesitation between the GTpro and the GT Explorer, I chose the latter. As you said, the lack of the paralever may be the only thing that takes getting used to. Normally the Tiger will be delivered somewhere in mid-June. Thank you for your honest review

Sometimes a change is good. Both bikes are excellent, so I don’t think you could go wrong with either. I look forward to test riding the Rally Pro Adventure in the coming weeks and will see if it’s different enough to warrant a follow up. Mid-June is just around the corner. I’m sure it will be a blast. I’m looking forward to the ABR Festival at the end of June where I’m hoping to take in some trails on one of these equipped with knobbly tyres.

Great review as always Andre. I personally haven’t had the chance to test ride the new GT Pro yet. Maybe later this year after our trip. The front end dive (as you stated) could be possibly dialled out by adjusting the electronic suspension setting in the dash. All the best 👍🏻

Good review thanks, again the comparison with the GS as contemplating the two. Regarding the wind noise on the dual carriageway and my experience with a Tiger 900 I do think a helmet without a peak would make a difference.
@PeakMotorcycles

Thanks. And yes, I’m sure it would, though on my GS, my schuberth E1 is about the same noise as a peak less helmet. Though I do have a Wunderlich wing on the screen which helps a lot.

You can disassociate the damping from rider modes and just choose from nine damping settings regardless of any rider mode selected if you wish. It is a quick and easy way to check out the full range capability of the bike on a test ride. The setup menu is easy and intuitive and is very similar to the outgoing model. You can mitigate fork dive (if you think it is a bad thing) by coming to a stop with the rear pedal only, in the last 4-5 yards of any junction. If you experience excessive fork dive on a normal road then you are a) not anticipating the obstacle/corner early enough and relying on too much brake or b) have the damping set too low (or rider mode and its associated damping) for the given riding style. Change to sport or just increase the damping in any rider mode with the joystick to allow for more fork control under load. Great review, nice perspective, good comparison, love the consistent test road. The engine could do with more revs though, you are riding it in very high gears, maybe like a more "traction like" GS engine?
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry, I’ll have a play next time, and yes, I should change how I’m riding through the gears. A GS it is not! (There is still a lot of low down torque though)

I test rode the GS yesterday, deciding it would be iether that or the new tiger 1200 and i came away so dissapointed with the noise on the GS that apparently is front tyre noise that echoes up through the front of the bike, even at low speed. Read after the ride, on forums that it does seem to be a real issue. That is my only sticking point on the GS from my point of view. Its something GS riders seem ok with.
@PeakMotorcycles

Do you know what tyres it had on? My 1250GS came with AX41’s and it’s the first time on any bike where I’ve worn out the front tyres before the rear. My next trip on it is 4500 miles to Romania and back, all on road, so I’m fitting some Metzeler Roadtec 01’s which are much quieter. That said, I’ve never noticed the the front end noise, so yes, I must be ok with it! (I am tempted by the Tiger 1200 Rally Pro though for something a little different.

It amazes me that Triumph didn't do what KTM have done really well on the new iteration of the 1290 Super adventure and add electronic anti dive which emulates the telelever front end. It also looks as though BMW will be using this approach on the new GS and doing away with the heavy telelever approach. I'm also surprised that they opted not to provide ACC on the new bike, having just had to do a 4 hour busy motorway trip on my 1290 having ACC made life a lot simpler!
@PeakMotorcycles

I think the 1200RR has it, I’m not certain that the tiger doesn’t, I just didn’t play with the settings. Next time, for the Rally Pro, I shall investigate further. It’ll be interesting if BMW do move away from it. It’s been their thing for so long, but the weight won’t be missed!

can you let us know which number of the comfort -sport settings the suspension was on during the suspension test? You said at one point that triumph have done a few tweeks (@22:40), my understanding is that this a totally new bike? Thanks
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I didn’t make note of the suspension settings. I should have done, so please accept my apologies. As for the bike, it is completely new, but it’s still a 1200cc triple, 250-ish Kg, shaft drive, adventure bike. If coming from the previous, identically named, 1200 Tiger I guess it’s down to what you call totally new and how you define a tweak. It’s a new firing sequence on the same displacement, same number of cylinders and a different tune. It’s a new frame, but I think that is as much as a weight reduction than radical overhaul. Perhaps previous Tiger 1200 owners can feel the different frame but don’t know the previous bike well enough to notice the difference. The electronics are new, as is the screen, but is that enough to call the bike totally new? My apologies for not being clear, it was not my intention to mislead.

I’m sure it is. I think it does auto-preload too (like the GS), so I expect it could be firmed up. It was good, but I think a bike moves in a different way with a conventional fork vs a telelever. Not better or worse, just different. I guess I’d have to get used to it!

@@PeakMotorcycles Each rider mode has its own damping level. quite soft for" rain" mode, middle ground for "road" and fairly firm for "sport". But you can disassociate rider modes and damping and just choose whatever you prefer out of nine levels of damping. This is very handy when loaded and two up where you actually need a fair bit more damping, i.e. towards the sport end to control all the weight and provide a good ride for rider and pillion.

@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff thanks Terry. Will try that next time. That’s how BMW used to do it on the GS.
