Small Sailboat Cruising

Күн бұрын

After many months of repairs and upgrades, we took the Sunmaid down to the Bribie passage for her shakeout sail. BREAKING NEWS I have a new boat project to announce next week The Sunmaid is complete apart from cosmetic work and tweaking the rigging. An unexpected opportunity has me going in a new direction away from the Sunmaid project. It is a project that is very close to my heart, and I am looking forward to launching a new series of videos.
I have three boats in my very small yard. So the Sunmaid is on the market. It has to go to make room for future plans, but hopefully, I will get a sail or two on the Sunmaid.
The videos I create here are possible because of the work I do in my day job as Wood Underfoot. If you are interested in Having your wooden floor restored or a new overlay floor installed you can find plenty of tips, testimonials and examples of my work at woodunderfoot.com

Very interesting and lessons to rember for my shake out sail, I have been thinking up excuses to for get about the keel and cable inspection, because of lifting the boat, or laying it on its side on the lawn as suggested. Watching Baz and crew in shark infeasted water, getting his boat on the trailer. I best just do the job propley, and avoid the crack in the housing to fix as well. Looking foward to your wooden boat restoration, and Baz when he post his trip with you, not often that two people I have subcribed to are together, big thumbs up from me.

Makes a very strong case for dyneema. When my one failed for the third time I ended up swimming in croc and shark waters to fix it up.

Great boat name. I have a Saffron too, a Flying Fifteen at Sandgate. Funnily enough it's a rich golden yellow colour too....

Interesting thing that saffron the herb is actually red. But it imparts a yellow colour to food. Like boats it is extremely expensive to own.

It was a fun sail and great meeting up Chris. Nice to see our little Ultimate 18 from across the water too. Unfortunate end to our day but we'll have Lady Emma back on the water very soon. Hope to catch you again down the track for another sail.

Dear Chris. I may have commented earlier on my Sunmaid 20 project plans - you were kind enough to help me contact the association in Victoria. Well, the boat is on its trailer, in my suburban Adelaide driveway, stripped to the bone and with a tarp over it. A large workshop would be super, but a pipe dream at present. I am on the cusp of taking the multi-tool and other devices to the cockpit, as I cannot resist the challenge! The templates are ready, the FG and epoxy purchased and a plan laboriously worked out. Wish me luck. I've been filming my (slow) progress for a possible future channel. I just need a run of warm, dry days, elusive at the moment, to dive in. Wish me luck. So nice to see other owners' approach to typical problems on these boats. I have enjoyed watching your friend, Baz's channel, too. Cheers.

That’s very exciting stuff! You are taking a good approach stripping everything down to the bones. I work in similar circumstances. It’s frustrating sometimes but you get by. I look forward to seeing your vids. The cockpit sure could do with a work over. I’m interested in how you approach it.

@@SmallSailboatCruising If at all, in any way successful, I may write you with a personal, pre-KZfaq channel description! I will cut the ply for the seats and floors from today, glassing them on the undersides first. Next week will be fitting. Gulp! Nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh?

7:32 Trim on the back satay on a beach reach or close reach & ease off the back stay on a broad reach or downwind. My Sumaid will pull on the back stay downwind if you dont ease it off

I bump stop my Sunmaid20 off the trailer! at the bottom of the ramp 1 metre short I remove the winch strap & chains, I tie a bow line and lead it back to the vehicle and hold the line in the drivers seat wearing leather gloves! I reverse back 1 metre and tap the brakes and the boat keeps going straight off the trailer. I lead the boat around to the jetty or beach without getting my feet or the car wet.

I like the idea of keeping the bearings out of the water. If I let my safety go it would scoot off and land on the ramp.

Fabulous Chris. The Bribie Passage looks like an awesome place for a shakeout sail. Did you have any problems with the water depth? The charts say 8-10m in the centre...did you find that pretty accurate and not too many 'rogue' sandbars?

We didn’t come across any shallows sailing east west out of spinnaker sound. The only hazard there is jet skis. 😂
@jasonstork9606
@jasonstork9606 Жыл бұрын
Yes there is a big sandbank on the eastern side of the passage just north of the VMR base (Sylvan Beach). I comes right out and is marked by a red marker. Then as you go north there are more shallows here and there. The channel is well marked though.

Hi Chris, I have a Sunmaid 20 and it doesn’t have a backstay. I see that yours does. My shrouds seem tight enough but under the load of the jib the front stay seems to slacken. Would you recommend rigging a backstay?
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising Жыл бұрын
The back stay is part of the original design. I have drawings showing a bridal on the transom so that it becomes like a split fork to where is attaches. The backstay enables you to shape the main sail and it provides reinforcement if you are flying a Spinniker. I would highly recommend reinstating it
