First Take: The Tudor Black Bay GMT

For 2018, Tudor is venturing into (sort of) uncharted territory by releasing a true old-school GMT. The Black Bay GMT is based on the Black Bays that we've seen over the last number of years, keeping the 41mm stainless steel case and Snowflake hands, but its adds a blue and red "Pepsi" bezel, a bright red 24-hour hand, and a new movement. It's an outstanding watch that presents great value for money and fills a hole in the market. This on its own would be interesting, sure, but considering this watch alongside the new Rolex GMT-Master II only adds to the intrigue. Here we look at why this is a watch that has everyone at Baselworld talking.

I miss the days when Hodinkee were more expressive and critical about their opinions and review on watches. I just find that, nowadays, Hodinkee articles just provide basic technical information and how 'great' and 'good value' these watches are.

Yup and it is so sad to see that Hodinkee has turned to this soulless commercial company. I find that Monochrome and Ablogtowatch has good and honest reviews by a mile compared to Hodinkee, which has excellent photography, videos and articles with nice designs for readability but thats all.

It's definitely worth more attention. The Tudor is a great addition to the black bay line, whereas the Rolex just made little changes that not everyone will be into when buying a brand new watch at $9k (cough, jubilee, cough)

Hell yeah. The Boxster sounds like a great idea to me, but I already have an even cheaper Honda S2000. I would still pick the Tudor GMT on looks alone. It's a matter of personal preference, and each of us had to figure that out for ourselves.

Finally, an affordable “true GMT” watch with independently set hour hand, as oppose to those cheaper “fake GMT” movement by ETA, which only allows user to independently set GMT hand, a pointless function since you want the hour hand to display local travel time, not the 24hr GMT as it is more suitable for telling home reference time. I am a frequent traveller, and have long search for an affordable “true GMT” watch. As taking a blinged out Rolex GMT on extended overseas trip could attract unwanted attention in certain situations. This Blackbay GMT is the perfect solution for me and someone with similar requirements.

People in Europe tend to not really give a ***** about having a "fake GMT" since they don't travel through time zones like satellites. You can go from London to Greece with just 2 hours difference. So most of us don't care about being able to switch the date backwards, or tracking 3 time zones... just a 24h hand for tracking a distant time zone which you somehow have to care about atm is sufficient for most and probably better than changing the local time every day.

Seing it in the flesh leaves me a bit more lukewarm than I thought... Still wondering whether Tudor would not have been better advised to propose the GMT complication in the Pelagos. The Black Bay's lineup is really getting too crowded for my liking.

The Pelagos is supposed to be the 'specialist' watch, while the Pelagos is the generalist product line. Kind of like Carrera for TAG, there's a whole bunch of models so that the product line becomes the "go-to" flagship line for the brand.

This and the modern Tudor choreograph Daytona is amazing. Definitely would want to get my hands on one. Cool thing is that Tudor isn't as expensive, but still high quality and also still retain a look of a Rolex model.

The Black Bay never really did anything for me. The Chronograph is pretty cool, but I'd still rather have a speedy. But this... This is the coolest GMT I've ever seen.

I will never own a Rolex, because of the associations many people have with the brand (The douchebag types) Therefore a Tudor is just perfect for me. Many don't know the brand witch means I get the quality and look without people labeling me as "that kind of guy".

Love the clean pepsi look. The "GMT" line of text looks a little off though. It's just me being hyper picky but I don't like that font and it's relative "tallness" relative to the two lines below.

I'm sure most or almost everyone (watch lovers) here knows that Rolex and Tudor are "sister" companies…:) So with that said, If I was going to buy a luxurious watch, I'd go for Tudor. I think that Tudor got a better-looking design than Rolex. A lot of people now, in any other watch review videos stated/mentioned that Rolex looks boring and I can agree with that. Not to mention, Tudor watches' prices are a little cheaper than Rolex watches...but the quality is still top caliber (for Tudor), so my conclusion...Tudor, it is !!

Dang! Pulled the trigger on a heritage black bay too early. I think the price difference between a no date black bay to a date, GMT is insanely good value. When it's available, I think I'll flip the heritage one.

Okay good that rolex/tudor still follows hans wilsdorf plan. Rolex for people who can afford and tudor for people who cannot afford rolex. But to be honest with that price range its impossible to beat tudor on any category and quality. 👏🏼

Pretty obvious that Tudor is producing stuff to appeal to the people who like the look of Vintage Rolex watches. Unlike vintage these have the advantage of modern materials and technology...which very much appeals to me That snowflake GMT hand looks great and no cyclops pimple is a bonus in my book. Jeez I might just have to go down to the local AD and reserve one now :)

Great looking watch, but still holds the one fatal flaw of the BB line: it's thickness. The slabs sides and extra-thick case adapted for their in-house movement make this watch unwearable for me.

To bad. Thats exactly what I was thinking. They should have built it of the new Fifty Eight's thinner 39mm case so it would be more faithfull to the 1950's Rolex 6542 it's trying to pay homage to. After all, unlike the Submariner, Tudor never had an equivalent to the GMT. I cannot, and I mean cannot stand the case thickness of the BB. The thinner cased 39mm Fifty Eight is going to be my 2018 purchase for sure then. This is a retro vintage watch and a thick case should not be used.

This BB GMT looks more like a Rolex gmt coke, the only drawback I found on this watch is the "GMT" text, which looks not very delicate.

Aluminum bezel insert is the kiss of death for this watch, a major mistake by Tudor putting it on a watch these days when everyone is going with the superior ceramic.

I don't feel like this video is very objective. The watch is massive for a 41mm. Black Bay doesn't work well at all with dress shirts. It never did. Especially with the bracelet. I tried the watch on at the AD. It's a nice sports watch but not sure if it's good for everyday wear.

I still think what Tudor did here is awesome and a great buy if you crave as close as you can get to a Rolex 6542. Hopefully Tudor will offer one on the 58 slimmmer 39mm case some day for vintage craving nuts like me. Like that Daytona's sad cousin, this looked like a dumbed down Rolex. The 3-hand Black Bays are the only ones designed to look good. This one is designed to look worse than the Rolex.

Clay Denos unfortunately it may look out of place, as lumibrite has replaced radium painted bezels and indices, developing a cohesive patina is essentially impossible. It will look like an old bezel on a new watch

Also happens to be one of the most successful watch brands of this decade. I prefer it over Rolex mainly because it doesn't try to be a flashy tool watch. I also hate the stigma around the Rolex brand. I think they have a lot more charm than Rolex.

Tudor exists because it appeals to a different audience. I find Tudor to be more aesthetically appealing than Rolex. Tudor is also a better value than Rolex - you get a lot more watch for your dollar.
