in my humble opinion, the first 10 minutes of this episode (the scene with ramzi, all the devastation of the rumbling, eren's true motivations) are attack on titan at its finest. sublime direction, scoring, dialogues... you watch a global tragedy unfold, all while realizing that the protagonist is not doing all of this just because he needs to do it in order to protect paradis, but because he also wants to fulfill its own selfish and childish desires... eren is truly peak character writing

THANK YOU, for catching Eren's selfish but childish desire he had implemented into him as a child all the way to his adulthood and understanding how TRAGIC it is for him while understanding how horrible it is also. It's fucking beautifully written and Eren will always be one of my favorite characters, truly a complicated written one.

I read the manga, I knew her death was coming, seeing it in the anime, it still broke me. Hange was by far one of the most interesting, crazy, characters, she was my fav :(

Ive been waiting for this one. Ive lost track of how many times ive seen this scene with hange, and how many reactions of it ive seen, i get chills every time

The future cannot be changed because it's what Eren wanted deep down despite some part of him not being okay with it. There is of course the aspect that circumstances partially forced Eren to do this, not just his desires.

The timeline that a lot of people have trouble grasping is: - Eren realizes the world is different than he expected, wants to wipe it all out, triggers the rumbling. He made a selfish choice, he did something objectively unjustifiable. - He then realizes he did something horrifying - tries to tweak things to change it, but realizes he can't, he already made the one selfish horrifying choice that can't be changed (for reasons explored in the very last episode) He says it clearly: "I did to save the island and to save Eldia, but there's more to that ... I wanted this, I was disappointed, I wanted to wipe it all out." Notice they do give him several ways out, but he simply refuses them. He made up his mind. It's not just that it's set in stone. Also, side comment, Hange had the most epic death scene ever. And that music!

I cried so much seeing Hange's fate, I want to live that feeling again seeing you, thanks for the vid!

If Eren can't change anything, it's because there is only one line of time, so one futur possible. Even if Eren has the power to transcend time, it's because of this power that futur is already determined, by himself. To compare with something simple, Eren shot an arrow, here the Rumbling, but from the future. Once you shoot the arrow, you can't stop it from hitting its target. It'll go to the target no matter how hard you try to stop her. Here, it's the same thing. If Eren started this mess from the future, present Eren can't do anything to stop the Rumbling because the arrow has already been fired from the future. This creates a future that is unique and unchangeable no matter what he does. This is the Eren who launched the arrow from the future, who in other words designed and led the Eren from the present to his own stage. It's a time loop, basically. If Eren hadn't influenced Grisha, Eren would surely be different, or dead. But it is because Eren of the future influenced Grisha to have the founding titan, that Eren of the present will become Eren of the future. It is a form of paradox where the character is both submited to his future but decides it at the same time, because one part of him is free and the other is not, depending on temporality.

Time is not like a river flowing into the past, present, and future, but like a rubber ball. For example, even if we make different choices at a certain time, we have elasticity (resilience) that converges to the same macroscopic result. We humans call this the law of causality. The true nature of time is entropy, but it would be a long explanation, so I will omit it. Eren saw the future in his memory, but in the future it is a past event, etched in space-time as a fact that cannot be changed. Knowing the future means that the freedom of choice, or "free will," that humanity believes it has in its hands is merely an illusion. Eren, by transcending time, is trapped in the prison of time. Into the dreadful hell of not being able to choose...

The opening of this special is one of the best scenes in AoT. Eren's voice whilst apologising over and over gets me every time.

4:53 - an important thing to think about as to why Eren can't change anything is that he didn't get a "vision" of the future (something like Dr Strange in the MCU), rather he *remembered* the future. That's an important distinction, and a clever bit of world building on Isayama's part to cue us into the fact that the AoT universe is causal and predetermined. Eren can't change the future because in order for him to remember what will happen, it MUST happen. The memories his father sees of Eren causing the rumbling would only exist if Eren causes the rumbling. It's a beautiful way to cement the question at the core of AoT: What does it mean to be free in a universe where free will does not exist? It's a way to get us to think about that fact that free will doesn't exist in our own universe and what that means for us

Imagine see the end of this chapter the last year and knew that I need to wait a year for see the last part xD

- The old couple during the rumbling, that were talking about judgement day, are zeke and erens grandparents, and geishas parents. They got locked up because zeke betrayed marley - “Two fingers is all I need” - One of the azumabito mechanics got shot by floch, and was bleeding but he didn’t bitch about it for a second and went to repairing, legend - Levi stopped calling hange 4 eyes when she lost an eye in season 3 part 2, but says it here. And yeah that’s actually the only time levi has ever said “dedicate your heart” - Hanges sacrifice in the manga was much shorter and kinda left a bad taste in the mouth imo, since she kills 2? And then combusts (from her odm gear exploding btw…) in only 2 pages :( she had literal flaming wings of freedom. - her after death scene confirms that all the scouts have *actually* been watching over them. - levi asking for help for the first time. - Jean and Connie 100% understanding reiner - and just like the hypest moment, the entire end song and descent onto Eren fucking RIPS - oh yeah, credit song “under the tree”, listen to the full version These specials are perfect

Eren has always been this way. If someone is coming for him, he will destroy them first. You see this when he kills the men who kidnapped Mikasa. And he just calls them beasts.

This show is too real, I get a pit in my stomach everytime I rewatch some of these parts.

The thing about not being able to change the future, it's that it's already happened. Eren's consciousness is displaced from time, so he's not seeing probability of outcomes, he is seeing what is happening at a certain point in time, he just did not have the full picture of how it all led there, which was the nations wanting to wage war against Paradis and not give chance for peace, due to their fear and racism, justified or not. So the "time travel" or visions is not like other types in TV shows and movies, most of them anyway. Even "science" considers the future set, it is deterministic, and free will is just an illusion of perception. Although Flock is a hateable character from the start, he always spoke the truth, and he never minced words. Isayama made me actually respect Flock, and salute his efforts to save his own life and Paradis. Flock, like ALL the minor ancillary side characters, had an amazing journey of character. He was first a coward who wanted to deflect because it wouldn't matter in the end since he'd be dead, he said to Erwin before the final charge. And now he took on all the Titan shifters and our Scouts, and he almost prevailed. Respect to that man is well deserved. Many also forget that Hange was part of one the special Scout units of elite fighters when we first meet her alongside Erwin and Levi and Miche, and she had her own squad we are told. Even knowing so, it did not prepare me for the supremely awesome and cool exit, like she said, and all her dialogue and goodbyes were so on point, and her epilogue was damn beautiful.

Eren can't fight his nature thats why he "can't" change anything. It's like he said if eldians dies off it's a fraction of the planet and titans would titans would be gone but he can't accept that outcome

"I'm hoping for the best possible, somewhat happy ending for this show...I'd like to think that it will end hopeful, and somewhat peaceful." I'd say you got your wish. I honestly can't think of more positive way this story could have ended, judging by the world it's set in(and the one _we_ live in).

I first got into Attack on Titan between s3 and s4 so I had my first long wait on the s3 finale and what really struck me about it is just how sad it is. Eren is just overwhelmingly sad in the moment. He is so defeated at that point and it's like he never recovers.

I hate attack on titans ending but your comment about not understanding why he can’t change the future means a big part of the story went over your head and you didn’t understand it. By not able to “change things” Eren is talking about Paradis ability to have diplomacy with the world. Hange and group went to Marley to try to do a peace deal. Simce they cannot make peace with the whole world that HATES them and had planned to attack Paradis as confirmed by Willy Tyburs Declaration of war. Then Erens literal only choice is to do the rumbling because there is NO other way. Tell me what is your answer? The entire world has literally decided to attack your island and wipe out Paradis completely. How do you save Paradis from that situation? Eren has no other option than to use the rumbling
