I'm 75 years old, and this Band has reinvigorated my love of rock music. I have followed the progression of rock from (The British Invasion- Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Eric Burton and the Animals), Southern Rock- Allman Brothers, Lynrd Skynrd, Marshall Tucker), Heavy Metal- Metallica, Motorhead), Grunge Rock- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Phish) I have even listened to R&B, Motown, Rap, HipHop, New Age Rock etc. I really feel the next wave of music we will be listening to is J-Rock. There are so many talented, diversified, and interesting groups in this genre. Band Maid (in my opinion), is at the forefront of this "Invasion". Band Maid is pan-rock genre, meaning they can write and play music from any of these genres. Some of their earlier work sounds pop-punk, some heavy metal, pure pop, but I believe hard rock is their foundation. Their live performances are the best showcase for their talent and their ability to own an audience.

Anyone of these ladies could be epic on her own, but they blend so well together - Band-Maid is one of the most underrated gems in the current times. Personally(as an old 70's era headbanger), I really prefer their official live videos like 'Domination', 'Freedom', or even official MV for 'Choose Me', or instrumentals "From Now On" or "Onset". When this video for 'Thrill'(their breakout song) was done, Miku(Rhythm Guitar) had stopped as lead singer in favor of Saiki's more hard rock style. Miku didn't yet know how to play the guitar very well and started learning from the lead guitarist Kanami. Also, while on tour Saiki's voice was so stressed she stopped talking off stage to save her singing voice until she finally had some surgery to help with vocal cord polyps...and now she actually has more range and power than before.

Their label had decided to drop them, but the video shoot was already scheduled and paid for so their management decided to wait before telling them the bad news, that Band-Maid were being dissolved. When they showed up for the shoot, the band members decided that they hated the song that they were told to perform, so they performed the song they thought represented them best: "Thrill". The video went viral and Band-Maid went on to develop a huge fanbase and a growing career. They only heard about this several years later. Rumor has it that they wrote the song "I Still Seek Revenge" in response. Band Maid are kind of known for big sweeping choruses so if that’s what you’re into you’re in luck. They are my favorite band for sure and you’ve just seen them in their infancy. They’ve come a long way from Thrill. I recommend ‘No God’ official live from Tokyo Garden Theater.

On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. I saw them last month in Atlanta, I can tell you I've been to many concerts in my life and enjoyed them a lot, but the Band-Maid concert... I have never felt so happy before like I did. They are freaking amazing! They are in my top 10 of my favorite bands of all time now.

Also note it is likely the last time you will see her wearing shoes. you might consider going in chronological order in their videos to see their progress. as raw as 'thrill' was - their first video from 2014 - it's a killer tune that has everything. next in line would be the mv for 'real existence' which is even better still. i would leave you the link but for some unknown reason for about the last month youtube has been deleting any comment i make with a link in it. no biggie cuz there is only one official mv for the song - easy to find. then after that you will want to hear the mv for 'the non fiction days'. more killer stuff to follow

As for your first foray into the music of Band-Maid, this is their very first music video and is the song that saved the Ladies from being disbanded by their management/record company. However this song saved them from that fate. It took until their 3rd release before they were allowed to perform the music they wrote themselves, the first song of their own that the record company accepted was their song "Alone", their next album however, was a full length with 13 songs, 9 of which they wrote, arranged and mastered themselves. They have written the majority of their own music ever since then, occasionally using trusted outside writers to help them when they are in a time crunch. The majority of the Lyrics are written by Miku, the co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, although the Maid lead vocalist Saiki (Sigh Kee - Psyche) has been writing more and more lyrics on their last few releases. As you progress with your Band-Maid journey, you will find thy incorporate all other genres into what many of us fans (Maidiacs) call the Band-Maid Genre. No other band sounds like them, nor incorporates so many other genres. I will ask you, for your next reaction to be sure to use a LIVE video, Domination Live is usually the best one, although, Play Live, Freedom Live and Real Existence Live are ALL damn good songs. Any song on their channel is a good song, if you don't believe me, try them for yourself. You will experience the true power of these Ladies. (Kudo's if you get the reference)

You lucky buzzard. You aint seen nothing yet. If you have a choice between a LIVE version of a song and the Official MV always choose LIVE first. But after that check out their superb music videos. Very well designed and executed visually. Domination LIVE is a very popular recommendation but the MV is GREAT visually. That being said the LIVE version is far superior. They never fail to stuff their songs with riffs, a couple of hooks. crazy bass counterpoint to the criminally short guitar solos, killer drum fills plus not one singer but 2! Saiki is a power house vocalist/dancer/ model and baseball/ sneaker/ train enthusiast. But Miku Kobato is the backbone of this phenomenon known as BandMaid. Over 130 videos you can react to if you want. Bear in mind this video was released over 10 years ago. Also bear in mind that they themselves consider their music Hard Rock. Not Metal, too many reactors refer to them as a Metal band. Please don't fall into that trap. Their official live performances always sound & look better this old bloke. Give the 'Manners/Black Hole', live video a try. It's one of my favorites.
