Getting acquainted with the twin stick backhoe on a cedar stump. First time using heavy equipment, this is a million times better than digging by hand!

Backhoes are really handy, I have a 580 E just like yours and was surprised what you can get done with one of these. I laugh when I think about learning the operation, an old timer once said that it took him an hour of swinging before he hit the ground!

We have a 580B and I am waiting on a dipper arm to come in - then it's back to digging. Great video - thank you for posting!

Nice job for your first time. I just bought a 1982 580 Super D and will be learning soon. I used to run a 4-stick hoe, but that was over 20 years ago.

Teeth are good for digging dirt out of the stump and grabbing the stump on top to loosen from the ground.

I just bought a 1985 JD backhoe and I was thinking I needed to cut the plate off of the bucket but you’re right It’s more powerful than one might think and I’ve been able to dig 30 of the 72 stumps up already

If you're curious, if I'm remembering correctly the machine PIN (product Iden. Number) should be stamped on a aluminum tag somewhere on body to the left of the steering wheel, should be like 7 numbers long. You can look up that number online and it will tell you a range of s/n built every year. Mine is a 1979.

Remember...even on private property...call for underground utility locates before you dig. There might be pipeline utilities across private land etc etc etc. If you know your land OK. But if you ever hit anything it could cost you thousands. Maybe even injure or kill. It's the law in every state.

Hi Wayne. Okay? When I pull out tree stumps, especially in the case of eucalyptus, what I usually do is open a hole in his mud and after pulling it out, I bury it. Hug

That machine sounds like a "D" model. I bet it is and somebody painted it with the "E" decals. Does not sound like a 4B Cummins under the hood.

Was wondering what price range for something like that goes for. I was looking at a 580c and they want 9500. I don't want to give way more then it's worth because when I'm done I'll probably sell it again and would like to get most of my money back out of it.

It's heavily governed by the condition. This one had a lot more issues than I realized, though they were small. I picked this one up for $8500. I have seen them go for $11,000-$15,000 in very good condition.

How much did you buy it for and how many hours on it? I need to buy one
@fixaday3 жыл бұрын
$8500, it shows ~4,600 hours but the hour meter was not functional when I bought it. I suspect somewhere around 7,000-9,000 but I could be wrong. Maintenance goes a long way, it could very well have under 5,000 but it doesn't represent it well.

Did you buy this just for your yard?
@fixaday3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, yes. There is intent of side jobs during the summers (I am a full time student), but the primary purpose is personal property.

You can dig with any bucket but that bucket is a ditch bucket you need a narrow bucket
@joeganusi85223 жыл бұрын
You should have beat the stump before you lifted it out of the hole. The more dirt you leave on it, the heavier it is.
@jonkastanek24682 жыл бұрын
What did you pay for it just curious cuz I'm looking for one
@fixaday2 жыл бұрын
$8,500 in the exact condition seen in the video. This was immediately after unloading from trailer and checking fluids.

After giving pine stumps a try, you’re right! I got lucky with the cedar in the video, the roots were like glass and the soil was soft. Pine trees are totally different and without teeth can be a real pain!
@notyou69503 жыл бұрын
Free tip: Don't cut the tree before you dig it up. Use the leverage to your advantage then cut the timber.

Didn't anyone give you any training? Where's the CAT hat, the half, chewed soggy cigar, the green shirt with your name embroidered on the chest? Where's the plumber's crack? What are they teaching kids these days? This kid looks like a history major at Harvard. What is the world coming to?
