Eric Clapton is actually the greatest guitarist that is still living although you can't leave out people like Mark knopfler and people like that but you're actually watching the acoustic version of this song Eric Clapton come from a group called Derek and the dominos you oughta watch some different versions of this song Eric Clapton can really shred something serious he's one of the hardest electric guitarist to follow because of his skills he is a natural when I was young on thing I knew is that my Mom and Dad loved him but as I got older I can see why this man is the truth he also does blues festivals he's even perform with b.b. King

The ORIGINAL needs to be played. Layla is about a story given to him and Patti Harrison , GEORGE ’ wife. Evidently, it's a love story about two people who can't be together. Long story short, he married GEORGE HARRISON'S wife.

A long time ago, in the 1970s, some of the DJs at our local radio station (KSAN 94.9 FM (aka "the Jive 95")) would open every show with the original version of Layla. Good way to wake up in the morning.

OMG, this version is so stylized and laid back it's nothing like the original track. You may have had your first taste of Clapton, but you still haven't heard Layla. The studio version features one of the most searing electric lead riffs from the period, nothing short of iconic. And the whole song transforms for a long sweeping coda that is just gorgeous. The only things this has in common are the words, the chord progression, and the man sitting there. Please give it another shot and listen to Layla from the studio.

The original studio version was electric and up tempo with Eric on lead guitar and Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers sitting in on slide guitar with Eric's group that he formed called Derek and the Dominoes. It was in 1971and it's a classic and was a hit as single. He did MTV Unplugged in the early 90's and that is when he first did Layla acoustically. That live version became a single and Layla was once again at the top of the charts 20 years after the studio debut.

He's called slowhand because, way back when, if he broke a string on his guitar, the concert would stop, he would replace the string. The British being British would start a slow hand clap during these "breaks", Chris Dreja (guitarist in the Yardbirds with Eric) gave him the nickname Slowhand based on that.

The Derek and the Dominos version is a classic ROCK song. Give it a listen. The amazing Duane Allman on slide guitar compliments Clapton's work greatly. The piano outro of the original version is EPIC! If you've ever seen the movie "Goodfellas", you'll understand.. This acoustic version is almost a reggae/swing version. It's a good re-mix, but the original is the ultimate! Thanks for your platform!

Eric Clapton was the first of the 3 famous guitarists in the London band The Yardbirds, along with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, quit when he was 20 and joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and finally Derek and the Dominos in 1970, making classic recordings with all of them. He’s been a solo artist since about 1970, when his first solo album came out, although the Derek and the Dominos record was actually recorded after that. He also was a friend to Beatles, Stones, Who, Hendrix, … and played on a Beatles record, a Stones record, was uncredited but all over George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’, was part of John Lennon’s band on a couple live gigs… maybe the premier English guitarist. Anything from Derek and the Dominos is great studio or live.

The songwriter/ singer of the Toy Story song is the phenomenal Randy Newman. He may be an acquired taste for some because he’s very unusual but so brilliant. And I agree that you really need to listen to the full electric version of Layla with the group Derek And The Dominos. You should know that Eric Clapton played in many different bands over the years and so many fantastic musicians. You should listen to Cream- just 3 top musicians (Eric Clapton with Jack Bruce on Bass and Ginger Baker). “Crossroads” is phenomenal. Layla is his pet name for the wife of his best friend he fell in love with in real life. She was Pattie Boyd and she was married to George Harrison, one of the Beatles. It’s quite a story. She did end up with Eric eventually for some years before they crashed. But both he and George wrote great songs inspired by her.

This is the acoustic version of the same song he did in a much more rock version years earlier. This was the second time this song hit the top of the charts. Both songs have a different feel. It shows his mastery of the guitar that he can play it both ways. He has had a 60 year career and back in the 60's there was grafitti on the walls in England saying "Clapton is God". He has the respect of a ton of artists especially in the blues genre.

By the way, the song Layla was written for Pattie Boyd, who was Clapton’s friend George Harrison’s wife at the time. He wanted to woo her away, but in the end she couldn’t do it even though Pattie and George no longer got along.

Eric Clapton wrote the iconic song “Layla” about his forbidden love for the wife of his close friend George Harrison of the Beatles The woman in question was Pattie Boyd, who eventually became Clapton’s wife. The inspiration for the song came from Clapton’s reading of the classic Persian unrequited love story, the epic poem “Layla and Manjun” . The emotional turmoil and longing expressed in “Layla” have made it a timeless classic in rock music. 🎸💔

To my knowledge, the first appearance of the song was on the album, Layla, by Derek and the Dominos. Tis was a one-time collaboration for the lineup which included Eric Clapton (the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith), Dwayne Allman (The Allman Brothers), Jim GOrdon (a well-known session musician in drums and piano), and the incomparable Bobby Whitlock (the Righteous Brothers). It includes an extended piano interlude not used in this version that, supposedly, was written by Rita Collodge. It is a star-studded work and well worth hearing over and over.

It was initially written about another man's wife (George Harrison of the Beatles). Who later became Clapton's wife. The original song/released in early 70s was a harder up-tempo electric guitar bonanza of guitar shredding! This recording was during a time when "unplugged" was rampantly popularized by Mtv. A more intimate environment and sound, and allowed a lot of reimagining of songs. If you want to hear a pure rock song kick ass - check out the original (at that time Eric was part of a band called Derek and the Dominoes) and hear the vastly different arrangement.

You're one of the few reactionists that's I actually subscribed to period I think you're doing a service for a young people who would miss out on songs like layla and others like tears and heaven by The same artists. And the fact that you're from cleveland woo woo woo. Keep up the good work. The kids need to hear this music

Eric Clapton is legendary. Polo, do you see all the high numbers of comments. I think you should seek out all the old legendary artists. Musicians and comedians. Some old Blues, the beginning of rock n roll.

The song was a love song written about Patty Boyd, who was married to George Harrison at the time. They hooked up for a while after she and George divorced, but it didn't last long.

Some of this is discussed in other comments. Layla is Patti Boyd. At the time she was George Harrison of the Beatles wife. Gearge and Eric were best friend's; but George's marriage was close to it's end and Eric was maddly in love with Patti. He made his play for her, but was rebuffed and crushed! He traveled to America and under the name Derek and the Domino's, recorded the album "Layla and Other Love Songs" with the great Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers in Florida. The album has many wonderful songs including the original electric cut of Layla; but the song you need to react to is Buddy Miles, "Have You Every Loved a Women". The song mirrors Eric's love crossed dilemma. A man hopelessly in love with his best friend's wife. You can hear the pain in his voice as he sings about his unrequited love.

When he came to play the Ryman in Nashville I wrote "God Comes to the Mother Church" and almost got fired from my newspaper job. Yea, he's good.

Another master guitarist! The music of my life. Elvis, Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, and so many more masters. Not the mediocre music put out today.

Eric Clapton is super versatile .. he has this laid back song another much more upbeat track called Cocaine and a much slower extremely sad song about his young son who passed called Heaven

Layla (Pattie Boyd) was his best friend's wife (George Harrison of the Beatles fame.). She must've been a hell of a girl as both penned more than one song in her honor. Perhaps even more startling is that even after Pattie left George for Eric, the two men remained close friends. Boyd inspired Harrison's songs "I Need You", "If I Needed Someone", "Something" and "For You Blue", and Clapton's songs "Layla", "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Wonderful Tonight".

Layla was written about his future wife Patty Boyd. But at the time she was married to one of his best friends.......George Harrison. She had three songs written about her. This one, "Wonderful tonight" also by Eric, and the Beatles hit 'Something".

He recorded this originally as Derek and the Dominos and it’s an all time classic. If you’ve ever seen the movie Goidfellas there is a scene where this song is prominently used.

This is the wrong Layla, barely a shell of the album version, which was released in the late 60’s on a record called “Derek and the Dominos”, which was a one-off collaboration by Clapton and the late Great Duane Allman. I still remember the first time I heard that version aboit 45 years ago when I was 13. It is a rock masterpiece. Please check it out.

This is the third version I’ve heard from him. The original version was a rocker. The second "unplugged" aka acoustic version was freaking awesome and this one lands somewhere in between. Might be fun for you to check them all out in order to get the full picture. Loved your reaction !
