He's talking to his persecutors. His sins sharpen their knives. He refers to them being on their high horse. He's sarcastically telling them he'll worship at the shrine of their lies where they preach love, but behave with hate.

No its not an onterpretation it is about the murder and torture of gay men and women in russia infact many are deported to chechyna (where there are now laws as the law is dictacted by the special police) no one knows for sure but there are alot of reports of rape of lesbians and the beating to death of gay men. Even though there is a mismatch in the lyrics as at the start of the song he says she twice when refering to his lover. Given English is not this guys native tongue could be a genuine mistake

In 2013, Hozier was a struggling musician, often seen in Dublin-area open mic nights. During this period, he penned "Take Me to Church" at his parents' home in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, and recorded a rough demo in their attic with a programmed backing track.[2] He wrote the song after a bad breakup,[3] as he later remarked that "the vocals were recorded in my attic at 2 o'clock in the morning. So it's a real homemade job."[4] It took him three months to write the song; only two musicians feature on the track: Hozier and drummer Fiachra Kinder.[5] The demo caught the attention of independent label Rubyworks, which paired him with producer Rob Kirwan. The song was overdubbed with live instrumentation, but the original demo vocals remained because Kirwan found them "powerful" enough to remain.[2] Lyrically, "Take Me to Church" is a metaphor, with the protagonist comparing his lover to religion. The song grew out of Hozier's frustration with the Catholic Church which, as somebody raised in the Protestant Quaker faith, he saw as dominating the social and political outlook of the Irish state.[6] "Growing up, I always saw the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church", Hozier said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "The history speaks for itself and I grew incredibly frustrated and angry. I essentially just put that into my words."[2] In an interview with The Irish Times, Hozier stated that he "found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything ... you kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment-if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes-everything you believed about yourself gone."[7] The song contains sexual undertones; Hozier elaborated that "an act of sex is one of the most human things ..but an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation ... the song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love.[8] "Take Me to Church" draws inspiration from author Christopher Hitchens and paraphrases the poet Fulke Greville's verse "Created sick, commanded to be sound".[9][10][11] The song's title was often misinterpreted by Christian pop listeners, with the message critiquing the Catholic Church lost in translation. In June 2019, Hozier explained that the intention behind "Take Me to Church" was to "write something that, that was a kind of celebration of sexuality." Hozier admitted that people took the title at "face value" and "were very upset when they found out that" it was not a song about "actually about being taken to church." The song explores the topic of "shame regarding sexuality," particularly the societal or religious "aversion to homosexuality."[citation needed]

That's why I left religion and took the good (true understanding of love for one another) from them ALL to became more spiritual. We still live in a society where, due to religious beliefs, you can turn away someone who is anything but "straight". Even medically. This song helped me to start breaking ties with the lies I was fed about "love". You're to love your neighbor but I wasn't allowed to bring home anyone (even bringing someone "different" in the southern baptist churches I was raised in) but a white male. My ex husband told me I was a disgusting human being for not being straight". I cried like a baby the first few times I saw the video. I couldn't live it and had to break free. This hatred is still taught, especially in the deep south. You guys gained more respect from me. Not that you didn't have it already...it's just appreciated to see someone like BJ and not once was he appalled by their love in the video. We need more of those messages getting out. You guys are awesome.

I only follow the bible and the rules of god. God never wanted for people to kill/beat other people. God hates sin not the sinner and the problem is that religion and the corruption of people switched up his words for money and power. The bible is the real truth don’t listen to anyone except god because he did warn us there will be false prophets.

I get the same way. I’ve noticed some pretty bad reactions. Especially with cishead dudes, they can sometimes have this visceral reaction of revulsion that they can’t hide. It’s a reflection of the bigotry that still infects the world. It’s like how whte supremacy is still so interwoven into the fabric of our country that a lot of ppl who don’t think they’re rcist actually carry implicit biases. It’s the same with LGBTQ+ ppl. A lot of ppl think they’re cool with ppl being gay but recoil when faced with any hint of gay sexuality.

Y’all are dancing around it, but the video is about Christian condemnation of homosexuality and the hypocrisy shown from anti-gay ‘Christians’ through hate from religious zealots that is unfortunately very real. Also, the word ‘faggot’ comes from hundreds of years ago when they used burn gays alive. And sadly in some countries today, still do. Hence the end of the video. Super deep.

@anonymous burrito No, it's really not. If you are straight, did you choose to be or are you just . . . straight? I mean, did you sit up nights in your adolescence trying to decide if you liked boys or girls? Did you experiment with both sexes first, just to make sure? Did you find yourself attracted to the same sex, but tamped down those feelings so you could be with someone of the opposite sex? Did you decide to be straight because, if being gay you realized that the road is much bumpier along the way? If you answered "no" to all these, then you didn't make a choice, you just lived your life the way you were made.

i think this song is one of my favourites, so it's nice to see other people enjoying it too! from what i understand (and from what hozier has said about it), the song and the video, whilst overlapping, are separate. the song is in reference to some of his experiences with the church growing up in ireland, and the discrimination against queer people, with the church being "she" and the partner/lover being "you" (to clarify, he is not gay, the person in the song presumably is). that being said of course, the song is really open, so tbh it's up to interpretation, and everyone will see it differently. the video is specifically about persecution in russia, and i think the story is fairly obvious. it made me cry when i first watched it - it's powerful stuff!

My lover's got humor She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshiped her sooner If the Heavens ever did speak She's the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom" The only Heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well A-, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover's the sunlight To keep the Goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice Drain the whole sea Get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life

I’ve seen this so many times. I married a woman and it failed miserably but as queer woman; my fellow rainbow friends, making sure people get that it is still stigmatised. This breaks my heart but this song hits me so hard. I break down every time watching the video, still crying now. 💜

The point is that church DOES judge people for being gay, etc. in Ireland, the Catholic Church was extremely against anyone being gay, having children before being married, etc. it Hozier was singing about all of it but made reference to the gay aspect more because of our most recent referendum. If god loves us all, he shouldn’t care how they live or love. The silly rules people have now are made by people and not by god.

Its about any and every "sin" we all commit daily . Everyone judges without seeing the sins they commit themselves but want to condemn others

My interpretation of what is in the box is his heart, notice how at 2:01 the guy burning the box knows that someone is watching? So he then tries to lock away his heart and bury it to be safe, but it is too late, they got caught, at the end at 8:20 the guy trying to break the chain to open the box symbolizes them trying to get him to admit to his “wrong doing” but regardless they throw it into the fire

Love is love, you can love anyone you want (aside from kids, not cool). My wife happens to be a white woman, but as long as they made me happy, my family wouldn’t have cared ethnicity or gender. My absolute best friend is Asian, godfather to my son, my family sees him as family. Bigotry is straight up bulls*.

There is a comparison going on between society approved religion (which is judgemental and hateful) and his love (which is considered a sin but is his pure heaven).
