Roy Orbison was a Giant in the music business. He influenced so many artists, of various genres over 50 plus years, until he passed away.

He didn't stop influencing artists when he died, just sayin' 🙂 We are lucky to still have his body of work. The videos from his 1988 "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" really showcase some of the many famous artists who looked up to him. Bruce Springsteen looked like a starry-eyed kid just happy to sing and play backup for his hero. Tom Waits was there, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, and Bonnie Raitt, too... and Billy Idol was in the audience.

@@bcpr9812 As a Canadian, I'd add that he was a major supporter and mentor of k.d. lang, helping her breakthrough to American audiences by doing a duet with her on a late night talk show (and later in his Black and White concert) of this song. This was at a time where being out as a lesbian in the music business was usually career suicide, but Roy was the kind of man who cared for all people, and did what he could to support her career.

"Elvis " and Roy started out at almost exactly the same time in 1956. Both were 18 yrs old. They ended up signing a record contract with a new, just starting out record label, (like them) called "Sun Records." Guess who else signed with that upstart record label? Johnny Cash! In fact, there is a picture of all three of those young men together in a little office of this new little record label together. None of them is older than 23. Elvis and Roy were just 18 years old. Elvis said Roy Orbison had the voice of an Angel, and he would trade voices with him in a minute! That's saying something. Roy had incredible range in his voice, hitting those very high notes. All three remained close friends until Elvis, and then Roy died. Roy had horrible things happen to him and his family over the years. Wife, and son died in a fire, and then he lost another child in a later marriage. Roy was a man of faith, and always said God was in control, and he would see those who were taken, when he went to Heaven. What a guy. So much faith in God.

Just a little correction; Roy's wife died in a motorcycle accident & 2 of their (3) sons were killed in a house fire. June 6, 1966, Roy & Claudette were riding motorcycles. She hit a truck that pulled out in front of her & died in Roy’s arms. Sept. 14, 1968, while Roy was on tour, sons Roy Dewayne, age 10, & Anthony King, age 6, died in a house fire. Roy’s parents were able to save the youngest, Wesley, age 3 (& they ended up raising him). Roy later wed Barbara & they had 2 children (Roy Kelton & Alexander).

Not sure where you got this info but in 1956 Roy Orbison was 20 years old and Elvis was 21, Neither were 18 years old in 1956...Elvis was 18 in 1953, the year he signed up for the draft. And Johnny Cash was 24 in 1956...Where ever you copy and pasted all these events are way off the mark.. The years and ages are all wrong and the deaths of Roy's family are incorrect. I was a teen ager in the late 40's early 50's growing up with all three of these men, and when reading your post I knew it was incorrect

Yeah people need to stop being in denial, sometimes remakes are better and there's no problem with that because there would be no remake without the original. But most of the time I can't stand remakes and have zero interest in covers. haha, remakes are like sequels and sequels are almost all not worth seeing, a couple remakes that kill are SRV's Voodoo Child, Daryl Singletary's Old Violin, Lyle Lovett's The Highway Kind, Jack Ingram's Desperado's Waiting for a Train..stuff like that, yeah I can mostly just think of country at the moment, haha

The qualities of being a masterpiece and being simple are not necessarily mutually exclusive. However, in a very real sense this song was simple in comparison to so many modern songs, which tend to be very overdone, with so many different things going on at the same time. Too many modern songs just don't give the listener time to take a breath. When it comes to true musical quality, less is often more.

Roy Orbison was the rock and roll balladeer with an almost operatic voice, with a range somewhere between 3 and 4 octaves, an emotionally vulnerable male singer at a time when men typically didn't show that kind of vulnerability. His song structures are unique, no one wrote a song quite how Roy did. He also was my mom's favourite when she was a teenager, and he's still her favourite now that she's 70.

Roy actually wanted Elvis to do "Only The Lonely." Roy said he'd just written it, was driving from TX to the studio in Memphis, stopped by Graceland, intending to play it for Elvis & see if he wanted to record it. It was about 6am & Elvis sent word (to the gate) that everyone was still sleeping, so Roy left & drove to the studio, where he offered it to Phil Everly, who wasn't impressed, so Roy decided he'd just record it himself (which he did a few days later).

One of the amazing things about Roy was that when you saw him perform this or any of his other songs live, hitting those high notes or that powerful ending, seemed effortless. Most singers would be making agonized faces trying to sell the song. Roy just opened his mouth and the magic flowed out. He did a duet with kd lang later on for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out that is well worth listening to. Their voices blended very well together.

I'll never forget seeing Roy Orbison in concert. Near the end of the show he walked on stage playing the guitar intro to Pretty Woman and when the song was over he walked off stage to thunderous applause. A minute later he walked on stage and performed Pretty Woman a second time. I've never seen another artist do this. Legend! Also, Roy could sing heartache because he really lived it. A couple of years after his wife died in a motorcycle accident...two of his sons, out of his 3 children, died in a house fire. They were at home in the US and he was performing in England. So tragic.

Back in the day, it wasn't unusual for a man to admit his own emotions such as sadness, vulnerability, and crying in their songs. Men feel these things and a real MAN, comfortable with their masculinity, can admit those things. It's a good example for young boys and young men to see that what they feel, and they do feel those things, are normal for men to feel. It doesn't make you less of a man, it makes you a human man, a normal man.

When Roy Orbison began picking up steam most critics agreed that his style and music (most self-written) transcended all popular American music forms. When he did his first run-through of this song with orchestra backing -- and hit his high notes -- the orchestra just stopped cold in amazement. Factoid: on tours Roy Orbison carried glasses and sunglasses (both prescription). When he was touring England in the early 1960's with the Beatles (who idolized him) he lost his regular glasses just before going on stage. So he opted for his sunglasses and realized they were much better for him on stage because they helped him suppress his natural stage fright.

One of the finest voices in music. Elvis thought so to and said he didn't ever want to follow him in a show. He has a very sad life story started with losing his wife

Roy Orbison top the charts from 1961 - 1964 with 16 of his biggest hits. I was actually listening to him this morning on my playlist… small world 🌎

Roy could sing like a force of nature. This song and “Blue Bayou” are like two book ends. So similar , both beautiful.

When Orbison sang with the Traveling Wilburys, Jeff Lynn produced the music, and he said when Roy sang, he 'buried the needle' with his voice. Haven't seen anyone with the range Roy had yet.

He was a master of the melodramatic love song. 'In Dreams' is probably my favorite of all, but 'Oh, Pretty Woman' is probably the best known. He had a LOT of hits in the early 60s and was extremely influential over the British Invasion groups that idolized him.

Without question, in my opinion, one of the best voices in Rock & Roll history. He had so many songs that i loved, and my favorite of all is " In Dreams".

You can't compare this song to 60's rock and roll..........this was great for it's time. Two or three years is a lifetime in the evolution of rock and roll in the early years. This was some of the last of early rock. no drums, no squealing guitars, just feel good love songs. A great new era was about to begin.

Not only an incredible singer. Lost his wife and child in a fire. He was known to be one of the kindest people ever in spite of it.

Roy Orbison was magnificent. His ballads are timeless. Please play In Dreams. He was also a member of The Traveling Wilburys which had a number of super musicians including Roy Orbison.

Roys first wife was killed in a motorcycle wreck when they were both young. Two of his young sons died in a house fire, not long afterwards at his parent's home, when he was touring in England.

Even more tragically, Roy and his wife we're riding motorcycles on the road, someone ran a stop sign or red light, and ran into her, killed her instantly, right in front of his eyes!

At a tribute concert for Roy Orbison held in LA, on February 24,1990, K D Lang sang Crying and brought down the house it was so beautiful.

Always enjoy watching you two react to early rock classics. "Crying" is probably one of the most spectacular songs and performances of all time. I played my 45rpm copy to death as a teenager back then.

I was fortunate to see Roy twice. His vocals live were SOARING! He was a pillar for so many of the greats to follow (Beatles). Imagine turning on your radio late at night and finding the station from 150 miles away...the sound crackles til you get the dial in the sweet spot. Then this voice comes soaring of the airwaves and ends with the still of the night! The magic of Roy Orbison!
