Please keep going with her music. She has such variety that I’m sure you’ll find a favorite eventually. She is supremely talented, especially as a lyricist.

The song is from the album red, which was originally five minutes, but when she re-recorded it, she released the 10 minute version of the song along with the short film. The song is about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Taylor's Version explanation is a bit long but the short of it is: Taylor was not given the chance to own her masters by her first label. After she switched labels, her old label sold them to a man Taylor hated and never gave Taylor a chance to buy them herself like she had asked. So Taylor decided to re-record those albums so that she could own the re-recorded masters of all of her old songs. If you are interested in the much longer and more detailed version of this story it's that Taylor was signed to her first record label Big Machine Records when she was a teenager and the label had ownership of the masters of the songs she recorded with them. Taylor had the desire to someday own her masters and communicated that to the label president Scott Borchetta. When Taylor's record deal was coming to an end following the release of her 6th album reputation, Borchetta wanted to re-sign her to his label and to try to get her to sign he told her she could get her masters back but he would still not sell them to her. Instead he told her for every new album she made for him she would get one album of masters. Taylor didn't like being held hostage in that way, especially since she knew Borchetta had interest in selling the label and she wasn't sure who would buy it and own her masters and be her new boss. So instead, she signed her new contract with UMG/Republic under a deal that allowed her to own all of her masters that she recorded with them. Shortly after she left Big Machine, Borchetta turned around and sold all of Taylor's masters to someone else and never even offered them to Taylor. She was wanting to buy them and would have probably been willing to pay whatever they were worth, but instead he never told her he was selling them, never gave her the opportunity to buy them, and instead sold them to someone he knew Taylor hated: Scooter Braun. Basically Scott Borchetta acted vindictively because Taylor had decided to sign elsewhere rather than continue to be tied down by a bad deal with his indie label. Taylor found out through media reports that Scott Borchetta, a man who had been like a second father to her her had sold her life's work to Braun, a man Borchetta knew had treated Taylor badly and who she did not like or trust. She hated the though of Scooter Braun profiting off of her in that way so she decided to re-record all 6 of her old albums she had released under Big Machine Records so that she could own the masters of the new recordings. She communicated to fans why she was doing this and her fans backed her up. She has re-released 4 of those 6 albums now and they have all gone to #1 on the Billboard 200. Many radio stations have pledged to stop playing the old versions of her songs and instead only play the re-recorded "Taylor's Version." It's actually incredibly impressive how hard she and her producers and musicians have worked to try to re-record each song so meticulously that they would be mostly indistinguishable from the original versions. These re-records were not meant to improve upon or change the original songs, they were meant to straight up replace them so fans could still listen to the songs they loved without giving money, sales, and streams to a guy that had betrayed their favorite artist. It was a revolutionary move within the music business. Artists had tried to re-record like this before but none have had anything like the support and commercial and critical success Taylor has had doing it. To make the re-records more worthwhile for fans to buy and support she re-recorded all of the original songs on the albums as closely as possible but then she has added songs to each album which she call songs "from the vault." These are songs that she wrote back when the albums were first made but they didn't make the original album because she needed to trim the track list, she had other similar songs in sound or story, she couldn't get the production quite right at the time, etc. So she goes back into the "vault" of unreleased songs from that time, picks out her favorites, records them and releases them on her Taylor's Version of her old albums along with the original songs on the track list. That gives fans 5-9 brand new songs from that time that they get to hear usually for the first time (unless an old demo previously leaked).

You will love Speak Now, Reputation and Midnights. The reason shes doing Taylors Version is because when she left her old label they wouldn't let her buy her masters and after she left she found out on twitter that Scooter Braun had bought them. She was rightfully upset since he had been bullying her since 2009 so shes been rerecording her first six albums and adding vault tracks both to devalue the stolen versions as well as make the albums closer to what she would've done had she been given the chance to make longer albums. The vault tracks were all written back with the original album so she's just had to bring up the production slightly since they were never finished

The 19/32 age gap you're thinking of is Taylor and John Mayer (Dear John off Speak Now and Would've Could've Should've off Midnights are about him) Jake was 29 and Taylor was 20 going on 21. You should also check out The Moment I Knew and 22 with the new context of that and this song. For more songs that AREN'T about her breakup, Enchanted off Speak Now and Betty off Folklore are my recommendations

So happy to see this reaction! It’s always exciting to see people react to an artist’s best/fan favourite work since you get to see their ‘true’ abilities rather than what they make for radio-play. Songs (like Shake It Off) definitely become more palatable when you become more accustomed to an artist’s personality and talents because you know they’re just making the song for fun. I’m sure other swifties who are a bit more knowledgeable about the details and context of the song and re-recordings will let you know all you’re asking about so I’ll just stick to talking about a point about the argument scene that I feel maybe a lot of people miss. I think the main point of the argument is that he didn’t take responsibility of actions or how his actions made her feel. It doesn’t matter what the argument was/will be about if in the end he never takes ownership of his behaviour and just apologises to stop the conversation rather than truly resolve or understand anything. I also love how ‘Her’ is not portrayed as perfect - she also fell back into using passive aggressive language at some points which makes the whole scene feel amazingly real and nuanced. The centre of the problem really gets overshadowed by whole ‘acting different around the his friends’ situation when all she was concerned about was that he was suddenly able to switch off caring about her and why (was he embarrassed by her? was he too distracted being the centre of attention? etc.). The friends, at the core of it, are pretty irrelevant to the whole situation and the natural messiness of arguments and emotions makes it seem like ‘being friendly with his friends’ was the main problem rather than his behaviour towards her, which leaves us with the feeling that the situation is unresolved and uncertain if the relationship will make it in the long run. Can’t wait for futures music reactions and I hope you feel better soon!!

One thing i noticed after a few watches was "she" was wearing a purity ring throughout the video until the part where they were in bed together, then she doesn't have the ring on for the rest. Growing up as (an Evangelical) Christian in the south, i knew people who made purity pledges, "messed up", felt immense shame and then tried to be celibate afterwards, for a while anyway. Not saying that a purity ring means virginity, just a possible commitment to abstinence. Something like giving up a vow can cause extreme emotional pain, shame, and feeling like one has lost oneself.

I'm glad to hear you'll be continuing with your Taylor Swift journey. There's a really good chance you'll find something of hers that resonates with you just because she has floated between so many different genres and production styles. But the thing about Taylor is that regardless of album or genre, she very consistently delivers some of the best lyrics, storytelling, and melodies in music. There's a reason she is the only woman ever to have won Album of the Year at the Grammys 3 times (joining Paul Simon, Frank Sinatra, and Stevie Wonder as the only artists to ever win it that many times) and has the record for the most Grammy nominations for Song of the Year. So if you are a person that really appreciates great lyrics and/or melodies then you can probably enjoy nearly anything of hers if you give it a chance. But most fans will tell you to especially try to focus in on noticing and appreciating Taylor's lyrics. It's probably what she's most known for and it's the part of her artistry that she is also most proud of. If you are more into a certain kind of production or genre then you may have to shop around a bit to find the album of hers that fits your taste. That would explain why people recommended reputation to you - that is her album that probably highlights production the most.

Taylor doesn't really say what her songs are about, her fans just pick up on cues and/or make assumptions. Sometimes its more obvious than others.

It’s classic gaslighting. To tell her she is crazy or that she is making this up. That her feelings aren’t real. Which is why the lyric I remember it all too well and at the end it say you were there and you remember it too.

She was 20/21 when she dated Jake G. It’s John Mayer she dated when she was 19 and he was 32. Check out the Dear John live performance and then Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve. Both of those are about John Mayer. The first is from her perspective right after they broke up and the latter is looking back now that she’s the age he was when they dated.

Loved hearing your thoughts on this! Judging by your opinion on the song itself, I would recommend checking out the original length cut "All Too Well (Taylors Version)" which has a tighter storyline and more of a Rock sound to the instrumental. But overall I'm excited to see you ecplore more of her music

Great job! I’m new to your channel so I don’t know your musical tastes, but I certain love the Reputation album. At the other extreme, you will also definitely want to hear folklore. I have few things to consider: For either Reputation or Folklore, you should somehow be sure to see the corresponding movie versions because seeing her perform live elevates appreciation to a whole new level. At the very, very, very least: for Reputation you should watch the movie intro and first song (Ready For It). Reputation Stadium Tour movie: intro + "ready for it" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLd6lMln1tecmoU.html The entire movie is fantastic, but for the sake of introducing you to the album, the movie intro & song linked above is a great way to set the tone (and set the stage) for the album. (One possibility might be to watch the movie clip as the beginning of your reaction to the album?) For folklore, I highly recommend (beg, plead, insist…) that you experience folklore via the “Long Pond Sessions” movie. You will hear every song, but you will see her perform each song in an intimate acoustic environment along with brief discussions of each song. For a just a taste of what I mean, here is a sample: Exile (Long Pond Sessions) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZuDhKx2qMvIhI0.html I’m going to be keeping my eye on you (so you better behave 😉).

I really think you’ll like “Exile with Bon Iver” You had everything right. It was absolutely Jake Gyllenhall. Even down to their ages plus the ages of the actors. Just because this is how her kind of artistry includes lyricism does come from herself and her experiences. She never SAID it was Jake. People have just been following her so closely that it’s hard to get anything past us. Sorry that you didn’t like it. Personally, I love it. I’ll keep watching but to hear you tell guys “watch out” was hella disrespectful to her.

I feel like you missed a lot of the meaning in her lyrics. One of the major ones is that he told her that if they had been closer in age it might have been fine, then in a later verse she says that the joke is that though she gets older his lovers stay her age. He's now in his 40s and dating someone in her 20s.

It's okay to not be a fan of Taylor Swift. You can recognize she's a talented songwriter, but her music is not for everybody. I think for the most part, her fanbase gets her music because she's extremely personal with her music and is easy and fun to pinpoint the source. But for other casual listernes, her music can be a little bland. I think there are other artists that you can react to instead that you will enjoy much more!
