"Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" is a cartoon book drawn by Don Rosa, who is the old man in the video. Don Rosa is considered one of the greatest artists who have ever drawn Donald Duck cartoons and that book is kind of his greatest piece of art. Tuomas is a huge Disney fan and especially that book is something he admires a lot. His long time dream was to create a soundtrack album for that cartoon book. He was talking about that already in some interview in 2006. In 2014 he finally had time and resources to make the album. Something about his dedication and perfectionism tells the fact that hired the same symphonic orchestra for the album that they have used in several Nightwish albums. This was kind of his non-commercial hobby project and he was willing to pay tens of thousands of euros (or dollars) his own money just for making the orchestral parts perfect. Many americans don't know how big and popular Donald Duck cartoons are in Europe. And Scrooge McDuck is one of the main characters in those. That's nothing like the stupid Ducktales cartoon that americans are watching, but those are really nice stories, especially the ones drawn by Don Rosa. Most Finns, myself and Tuomas included, have been reading those cartoons our whole childhood, that's how many children learn to read.

Disney was always a really big inspiration for him. In 2006, the Finnish Broadcasting Company made a documentary series about the best Finnish artists and Tuomas was one of them. In one clip he was at home and took this Don Rosa's book "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" from the shelf and he said that he has this unpaid debt which he has to pay back in some way and he said that the intention is to compose an album from that book, so basically soundtrack to a graphic novel. He finally did it 8 years later and even got Don Rosa himself involved. Tuomas is a great keyboardist, but his real greatness is in composing and writing lyrics.

The whole album "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" is an incredible epic journey! It's like fairytail, but on steroids. The same stuff Nightwish takes... Tuomas is amazing composer. I really like his music.

Disney comics are a huge thing in Europe and probably even more so in Finland. Maybe not so much anymore but back when I was a kid pretty much in every household had a weekly Donald Duck comic book ordered. Numerous kids learnt how to read thanks to them. Mickey Mouse might be the most famous Disney character in the US, but here it's Donald and his uncle Scrooge. Don Rosa, the illustrator, wrote and drew some of the best and most beloved Scrooge adventures and this music shows how much Tuomas loved those comic books. The album was his solo project since he didn't think the other band members didn't quite share his obsession. In case you're interested you can find interviews of Tuomas and Don Rosa from 2014 when the album was released. At least some of them are translated in English.

As with all Tuomas' songs, the lyrics are important to this and thevrest of the album. As others say below, a tribute to Don, in the film. Johanna Kurkela, on the right, is Tuomas' wife and has a wonderful voice. I love Johanna because she makes Tuomas happy and Tuomas being jappy makes me smile. If you see them together, he always has a smile on his face. BTW, it is she who reads the Ronei and Juliet extract in Nightwish's Shoemaker.

Don Rosa (the artist) is a Disney cartoonist specialising in Scrooge McDuck and Donald and the other Ducks. He is a superstar in Finland in fact he already was before he took an interest in the country. In fact, he got interested in Finland because he had become so popular there, not the other way around. The comic book A Lifetime of Adventure is about the life of Scrooge McDuck and is hugely popular in Finland and Tuomas wrote the album around the book.

Tuomas grew up loving this comic book character. He found it a huge honor to be able to compose this beautiful project. Very small parts layered in wonderful ways to create a soundscape of wonder. Johanna's (Johanna Kurkela is the other half of Tuomas and his wife) voice is like a wood nymph or fairy. It is so delicate and soft. Don Rosa (Illustrator) was a bit bemused when some long haired guy walks up at a signing (Ducks in general and the Disney Ducks in particular are VERY popular in Finland) and tells him he is going to write songs about his Scrooge comics. Later he got a message that Tuomas was done, and was heading to London to record, and Don got the preliminary tracks, and was worried, then played them, Said by the second song, he was in tears at the beauty of the thing. The Johannas (The other girl singing is also a Johanna) have done other works together, and there is a live version of this from one of their concerts. Altamullan Road is the name of their project. Well well many things allready told here. But the album has 10 songs. And vocals are singing athors to then just Johanna Kurkela. The athors are: Johanna Iivanainen, Alan Reid, Tony Kakko. Then also Troy Donockley are playing different instuments in the songs. I am from Finland and i am 38 now and still i read donald duck comic paper every week. 😅 And i also have The Life And Time Of Scrooge comic books. And i have to say that Tuomas did very good music to it. IT fits very well.

There are quite a few songs that make me cry because of the lyrics (if those lyrics are well supported by the music), but it's very rare for a piece of music to make me cry just because of the beauty of the sound. This is one - paying attention to the lyrics just makes the feeling stronger, but it's not required for the tears to come. it seems a contradiction but metal music and classical are so intertwined, such a perfect combination. history shows its the music and not the song that survives. i wonder if in 2 or 3 hundred years time the good metal band will be like the classical composers we listen to today

Donald Duck and his Uncle are hugely popular in Finland, especially the graphic novels, the Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck, written by Don Rosa, the older gentleman in the video who is doing the illustrations. Practically every child growing up in Finland reads those books. Tuomas is very into literature and a number of his Nightwish songs are inspired by great books and poems (Song of Myself, My Walden, Edema Ruh, Greatest Show on Earth, etc.). Tuomas is also a lover of movie scores and composers like Hans Zimmer and Disney movies in general. He decided to write and record this album as a soundtrack to the graphic novels. In addition to being a beautiful song it also shows just what an amazing composer Tuomas is, not only of metal songs but orchestral music as well. The lead singer is Tuomas's wife, Johanna Kurkela, a well known and popular Finnish singer on her own prior to this album. I absolutely love Johanna's voice and the many projects she has been involved in. The other lady singing with her is Johanna Iivanainen. Together they have a project called Altamullan Road which is quite good. My favorites are The Space Between, Desert Flower, and The Valley. Johanna is also part of a project called the Eye of Melian along with Martijn Westerholt of the Dutch symphonic metal band Delain. Their music is best described as fantasy movie score with lyrics inspired by Tolkien and other fantasy literature (their lyricst is a professor of Tolkien literature and Matijn's wife). Since you're branching out with the other works by members of Nightwish, a very young Floor Jansen was in a band called After Forever prior to joining Nightwish. She was only 16 when she joined After Forever in 1997 and she was amazing from the start. After Forever broke up in 2008 and after that Floor and keyboardist Joost van den Broek both collaborated again in the bands ReVamp and Star One, before Jansen eventually joined Nightwish as lead singer in 2013. I highly recommend you listen to After Forever's song "Energize Me" I think you'll really enjoy hearing a young Floor Jansen sing.

Johanna had an appearance on the brilliant Insomnium track "Godforsaken" from their album 1696. Definitely worth a try (even kind a wee bit different music genre 😅).

Don Rosa is the old man in the video that doesn't wear the red cap. The man wearing the red cap is Pip Williams who arranges all Nightwish songs for the live orchestra and probably all songs on this album, too. If you want to read Disney comics, Don Rosa and Carl Barks are the only artists worth checking out, IMO. The book series that this music was composed for is called The Complete Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and it's only 453 pages worth of clever stories about the life of Scrooge McDuck. The sad part is that Don Rosa had had serious vision problems already years when Tuomas composed this music and Don Rosa hadn't drawn any new pictures in long time before this music video. It's clear that Don Rosa could have drawn a lot more if he didn't have health issues.

Nice reaction ladies! Another superb piece of music composed by Tuomas is the second CD of Human II Nature. Called: All the works of nature which adorn the world. There is a fan made video which goes with. Tuomas approved of it.

The London Orchestra is the same orchestra that Tuomas uses for Nightwish. Don Rosa is someone Tuomas loves and admires but is not his father he is the artist who draws Scrooge whom Tuomas is a fan. Also Johanna rhe lead vocalist is Tuomas's wife. Tuomas, Troy from Nightwish and Johanna formed a group called Auri there music is nice and relaxing. One of my fav's is called: Night 13. Which is a song about coming to terms about dying which somehow very sweet as we all must except this one day.

#DonnaLovesToumas So,this is his own solo project from when everyone agreed to take a breather from Nightwish,it wasnt for long,but simply so that every member who wished so,could focus on theyr own solo material. Floor joined forces with Pagan`s Mind lead guitarist "Jurn Viggo" Lofstad in the duo project called Northward (highly recommend that entire album,Floor finally got to live out her sassy rock n roll personality) Marko did some solo stuff,i know Emppu for the longest had some stuff going with his "side project band" called Brother Firetribe,i cant remember if he released new stuff with them then..... There are 2 women that has been said to have changed Toumas Holopainens mental wellbeing,after his depression period he went through. And that is sweet Johanna Kurkela,you hear sing lead vocals in this song. I love the part where he looks up from his piano and smiles in Johannas direction. We didnt always use to see Tuomas smile this much......... And the other woman being Floor Jansen accepting to be Nightwishes third and final vocalist. It is said that the guys in Nightwish dreamt of having Floor in as a vocalist,even back when Tarja in many ways forced theyr hands to look for a more long term solution. But Nightwish were super close friends with Floors original band After Forever,and they didnt want to risk any potential loss of friendships over asking her to join them. If this is true,i dont know. But its something you hear often as part of the bands history. And it just highlights the personality of each guy in Nightwish,they have good values across the board. So any other type of negatibe information you hear,is simply fabricated and false. They carry theyr flaws on theyr sleeves in this band,and everything they might have done wrong in the past,they admit to without hesitation. So there should be no reason for them to lie about theyr past with Tarja and Anette. The cartoon artist is Don Rosa, the creator of the Scrooge McDuck series (I think it was for Disney??). It was a strong influence on Tuomas as a child, and he called Don Rosa to ask if he would like to participate on the album project. He agreed, and here we are! In 1999 Tuomas got an idea to write an album, a soundtrack, inspired by Don Rosa's graphic novel, he loves. Years later when Don Rosa was promoting his works in Finland, Tuomas went to see him, introduced himself, and told about his idea. Don Rosa thought he would propably never hear from Tuomas again. But a couple of years later in 2014, Tuomas contacted Don Rosa, telling him the album was being recorded in London with an orchestra. Don Rosa thought he propably wasn't going to like the music, and might have to pretend he did. But he loved it. Tuomas produced the album and paid for it himself, and only afterwards asked the record company if they wanted to release the album. They agreed right away, without even listening to it first. They asked for one video, and Tuomas agreed, even though he originally thought, no videos. I'm glad they made this video, with Don Rosa. I think Tuomas' wife Johanna Kurkela has the kind of voice that's perfect for a song like this.

Scrooge McDuck aka 'Uncle Scrooge' became a popular Disney character since his debut in 1947, created by Carl Barks... He was originally supposed to be a 1-take character from 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens, but there was just so much that could be done w/ Scrooge McDuck either in comics or animation... the old, stingy Scottish duck who often employs Donald Duck and underpays him 😂 'The life and times of Scrooge McDuck' gave some insight into his past... being born very poor in Scotland and driven to seek out his fortune by traveling far from home and building what would become a substantial wealth... and leads to him owning a corporate empire and residing in a money bin which he enjoys swimming in 😂
