Welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 There really is nothing you will have seen or heard that is quite like BABYMETAL ... and in well over 50 years of listening to all sorts of music, going to concerts, seeing many of the recognised great live bands in their prime, I can honestly say that no other band has provided me with the same degree of entertainment or made me enjoy music and their performances as much as BABYMETAL. 'Gimme Chocolate' is not typical of their work - and yet in many ways it is. It is the song that went viral 9 years ago and got them noticed, but that is mainly for the shock value and that it makes peoples' brains melt. It can go either way and is not the song I would recommend to anybody as the first thing they hear from them. I am glad that you are open to exploring more - you will struggle to find another song quite like it. Also this is the official video, so the audio is from the studio ... BABYMETAL are so much better live (as I hope you will discover for yourself). They have about 70 songs now, each one different to the last, they have songs in virtually every metal genre but will also mix and blend so many other styles and genres with the metal. Some songs are good hard metal, some lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. BABYMETAL are pretty much unique in that they invented their own genre and their own way of doing things. Do not try to categorise them as just one thing or to put them in any one box. You will not be able to predict them, just expect the unexpected. They don't copy anybody or follow the same format as nearly every other band (as you saw for a start they have brought choreographed dance to metal). No they don't play the instruments, just like most vocalists in other bands - they don't need to. They do what they do best and have the best musicians to be found in Japan backing them up (more on them later). Nobody has been able to do what BABYMETAL do (some have tried, none came close). They are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and, since the start of April this year, Momometal (backing vocals, harmonies but mainly in charge of dance, leading the audience, getting everybody involved and joining in). The third original member, Yuimetal, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues. After Yui left Su and Moa continued as a duo for the next 4 or 5 years through to their 10th anniversary and a bit beyond, supported by 3 dancers (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) taking turns dancing in the third spot. Momoko was the only remaining Avenger from about March 2020 and was finally revealed as the official new third member on 1st April this year. They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a school themed J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which was set up by the Amuse talent agency as a way to coach and train about a dozen of the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, modelling, writing, stage management etc) with a view to their choosing how they would like to continue their career when they were at school leaving age (15 in Japan). BABYMETAL was the pet project of one metalhead producer who was inspired to experiment with this fusion of Metal with JPop aesthetics after seeing Su-metal singing with her previous JPop trio and being very impressed with her no holds barred singing style and stage presence - she was only 10 or 11 at that time. He pictured her fronting a metal band and got his chance to work with her when her previous group ended and she joined Sakura Gakuin. In 2013 Su would be 15 and would graduate from Sakura Gakuin (having the school theme it was for girls aged 10 to 15), but it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her vehicle as she furthered her career as a vocalist and should separate from the Idol group to go with her as an independent band in their own right. BABYMETAL have gone on to become one of the very best live bands on the planet (and have won many international awards to prove that is not just my opinion). Their big arena shows are spectacular, but they put on great shows every time, even in smaller venues and festivals as they tour the world where they can't always have all the special effects and flames etc too. Early on they did not have enough budget for a live band and the guys in skeleton suits (called Babybones) who you saw in this video would go on stage just for show, miming the instruments to pre-recorded backing tracks (Su-metal's singing is always live). They were phased out bit by bit after it had been decided BABYMETAL would split from Sakura Gakuin, so a live band (I will tell you about them in a moment) played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows from October 2012. This video was filmed at the last big concert (Legend 1997 in December 2013 - the day after Su-metal's 16th birthday ... she was born in 1997, this was her birthday party) where the Babybones appeared - the live band (the Kami Band) came on for the last 5 songs. They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. There are many people who have played in the Kami band as they all have their own bands or other commitments and they swap in and out depending on their availability, but the same hard core of about 6 musicians have played the vast majority of concerts and they are the ones you will see in most live performance videos. The Kami Band became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions. The Kami Band of the West - American musicians - have supported BABYMETAL in the more extended foreign tours since 2019. BABYMETAL are best experienced live. Even they say so themselves. They already finished The Babyklok Tour in the US along with Dethklok and everyone was having a blast with the setlist, the new songs from latest album and the classic hits, especially GC! either you hate or love it, is a song with crazy amount of views and they don't wanna leave behind in any of their setlist. Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey. This isn't actually live sound, is studio album version over a live performance which was partially live only on the vocals and choreography with backing track sound. They have their own band called Kami Band introduced later on that same show and after that Kami Band become regular at live performance. BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal". They are: *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25. *MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24. *YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018. *MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently. None of them are related. After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said. What the hell? That was certainly different, but the energy is through the roof. They even added the oldschool Roland Juno hoover synth sound, Joey Beltram - Mentasm style. The musicianship speaks for itself, and the singers... again, so much energy. Not something I would listen to regularly, but it is strangely hypnotic and catchy. Impressive.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🍫 💝 This was filmed on December 21st, 2013, at the 'Legend 1997' concert that celebrated the lead singer's 16th birthday. Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or "Su") turned 25 in December 2022. Even though the whole concept is the combination of JPop/Idol and Metal, this is definitely one of their poppier songs. Even so, that blast beat gets you. And the whole thing is about 10x heavier live. They have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce. Not all at the same time of course. : ) It's also the only song they've performed on American TV ('The Colbert Show' in 2016). Hope you continue. Every BABYMETAL song in unique.

Been a fan since 2014.

BABYMETAL is currently in the middle of a world tour. They just finished the US leg and are now returning to Europe, where they began the tour earlier this year. I saw them in Orlando at the beginning of September. It was incredible. If you had a daughter, you would have taken her to one of those concerts. There's nothing that makes me happier than seeing a father and a daughter wearing pigtails at a BABYMETAL concert. 🤘🦊🤘

Give Me Chocolate is most people first introduction to BabyMetal.... They get better....MUCH BETTER!!! I have also done drum covers of many of their songs.

I was wondering if or when you would fall into the Babaymetal rabbit hole (or fox hole). I believe the girls were 15 and 16 at the time of this concert. They had already been performing as Babymetal for 5 years. They are so popular in Japan, that they sold out 60,000 capacity Tokyo Dome 2 nights straight 7 years ago. Sumetal (lead singer) and Moametal have been together 14 years already. Yuimetal dropped out about 4-5 years ago and was just recently replaced. I've been following them for about 8 years, and I got to see them in concert in Chicago about 3 months before the Covid shutdown. They have many good songs and a variety of different influences. This song was about their favorite chocolates.

Sometimes I forget how young they were back when this was made, They have a ton of great songs and have come a long way since Gimme Chocolate. I think you're have fun with quite a bit of their catalog. Karate, Road of Resistance, Pa Pa Ya, Monochrome (the First Take version especially) Metali (with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine), Megitsune, should give you a decent chance to see how they evolved over the years, but honestly they really don't have many songs I don't enjoy, it's really hard to go wrong with whatever you pick.

Sugoi! Enjoyed your reaction and appreciate the open-mindedness, especially since Gimme Chocolate is BABYMETAL's WTF!? song. Initially, as an interested observer of BABYMETAL, and then as a fan, what surprised me was how much their totally unique concept rejuvenated and broadened my 60 year love of pop, rock, and metal music. A significant difference noticed in BABYMETAL themes were the complete lack of sex and general "bad behavior" of my era, and similar type themes in rap, hip-hop, and among several of popular K-Pop, J-Pop, and other 'Idol' groups. Because BABYMETAL formed when the girls were just 11 and 12 years old, the use of such themes would have been highly inappropriate. In fact, over BABYMETAL's 13-year history, they have deliberately not used suggestive or sexual imagery, lyrics, or choreography in their music or performances. Instead, BABYMETAL's themes are of unity, encouragement, finding the resolve to forge ahead despite struggle, and to give and accept help along the way. Ultimately, I find this very refreshing. Megitsune is often ppl's gateway song for BABYMETAL. But there are tons of great songs that theyve done with lots of genre mixing. I do suggest starting with their early work so you can see how theyve evolved over their careers. Other early work recs: Ijime Dame Zettai at sonisphere 2014 their first major concert outside of japan where no one really knew them Karate - the lives are cool but in the music video Su, the lead singer can fully commit to the dancing Headbangerrrr!! Moa version is amazing for the crowd interaction and one of the backup singers (moa) gets a solo Road of Resistance live in japan shows their energy, stamina, the band's stamina and skill, and Su's insane crowd control

Maybe try "Karate" or "BMC" or they have a really good collaboration with Bring Me The Horizon on a song called "Kingslayer".

This is a great start to what I usually is the trilogy of underdtanding who Babymetal are. This is definitely one of the strongest on the pop side and shows off their energy, the acting in their choreography, and is the song that really blew them up outside Japan. Second, I recommend Megitsune. It was the second song they ever put out and shows off a lot more in terms of what makes Babymetal tick from a pure musical standpoint, as well as showing off how strong Su-Metal's charisma as a perfomer was even at age 13. Finally, I recommend wrapping up youe intro with Road of Resistance (look for the video with "Live in Japan" in the title). This will show you the absolute brilliance of Babymetal on a live stage and how well they are able to engage the audience, and KEEP THEM engaged for every second through an entire show. It's absolutely stunning. From there you have a bunch of other classics over their 13 years, with a selection of vids with the Kami band playing intros where they get to show off, some really cool guests and collabs, and ALWAYS a ton of energy and the best vibes.

Heavy Music Club Era (2010-2012) From 2010 to 2012 Babymetal consists of a three-member formation, Suzuka Nakamoto (Age 12), Moa Kikuchi (Age 10), and Yui Mizuno aka "Yuimetal" pronounced Yui-Metal. (Age 10). First starting out as the Heavy Music Club as a subunit within the Developmental Idol Group created by Amuse in 2010 known as Sakura Gakuin. Sakura Gakuin is a group that introduces girls between the ages of 10-15 to music, dance, modeling, and acting through Japanese Pop idol music and culture. Given a school theme, all three would be a part of Sakura Gakuin until their graduation from it in the same school year they would graduate from Japanese middle school or 15 years old. Suzuka graduated in March 2013, and Moa and Yui in March of 2015. Sakura Gakuin is a fantastic group with great kawaii jpop songs in their own right. During this time there was no lore, and the girl’s costumes were more punkish in nature, which they helped create. They also didn’t perform with live music, using a backing track or the “Skeleton band” people pretending to play music behind them. Music Video of this Era Doki Doki Morning (Debut Song) Iine (Pronounced EE-N A spelled i i n e) Headbangya Babymetal/ Metal Resistance Era (2012-2017) Starting in 2012 with the Legend I concert, Babymetal began its slow divorce from Sakura Gakuin, and was the first introduction of the Kami Band as well as the “Lore” that is still heavily involved in Babymetal but makes far less sense than it did during this time. The Lore is complex and involves a battle against other evil idol corporations, gaining powers, some time travel, running a resistance group, all at the direction of a mythical deity known as the fox god, against an all-power enemy known as Akiba. The first Legend show “I” was the Kami Bands introduction to the end, but it also had the Skeleton Band which is seen in the wildly popular Gimmie Chocolate Music Video. This was followed by Legend D, and then Legend Z, in which it was learned that Babymetal would continue as its own entity after Suzuka’s graduation from Sakura Gakuin in March of 2013. Slowly over 2013 the Skeleton Band would be phased out of all live shows, as Babymetal came into their own. Babymetal as it is with Su-Metal, Moametal, Yuimetal, the Kami Band, and a somewhat understandable lore is what consisted for the majority of its existence. Also established beyond the 3-member formation, they had 2 other set ups, one was what fans called Su-Solos, and it would just be Su on stage with the Kami band, performing a solo, and the other is known as Black Babymetal by the band themselves, which consisted of just Moa and Yui. Music Videos of this Era Gimmie Chocolate Megitsune Rondo of Nightmare - With mischief of the Gods Intro (Su Solo and a great expedition of the Kami Band) Road of Resistance Live in Japan (Co-written by Dragonforce) Iijime, Dame, Zettai Live at Sonisphere (Name means No More Bullying Forever) Karate The Dark Times, The Chosen 7 Era (2018) In December 2017, Yui would miss the Legend-S concert for health reasons, these health problems would prosiest into 2018 and greatly affect the 2018 touring season bring the “Chosen 7” formation, consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto, Moa Kikuchi, and 2 backing dancers Minako Maruyama, and Minami Tsukui. Changes they would not tell fans and all throughout 2018 communicate extraordinarily little causing lots of pain for all involved fan and performer. This era is noted by their strange armor like costumes, sometimes referred to as Elf Armor. To make the poor communication, and Yui’s absence wasn’t bad enough, one of the more regular Kami band members, Mikio Fujioka passed away after falling off a balcony in late December 2017 while star gazing. A beloved and incredibly talented musician lost, leaving behind his wife and only child. In September 2018 Yui formally resign from Babymetal, stating her unspecified health and wishing to move on. Babymetal themselves announced that the group will move on focusing on Suzuka and Moa. (Something many idiots within the fandom refuse or are too stupid to understand) In October Babymetal had a concert called Dark Night Carnival which added dancers, Shoko Akiyama, Saya Hirai, and Kotono, placing a total of seven girls on stage. This was also done without warning to fans and was an absolute mess. Babymetal would finish off the 2018 tour season returning to the 3-member formation with just Saya Hirai joining them in southeast Asia and Australia. Ending one of the most troubling times in Babymetal’s history. Music Videos of this Era (These MVs do not feature the members in them at all) Distortion Starlight (Don’t let overzealous fans fool you, this is OFFICIALLY not a tribute to anyone. A lot of fan speculation, end of story if they claim it is they are 100% lying to you.) Metal Galaxy Era (2019- Feb 2020) First introduced in 2019 during the Babymetal Arises concert in Yokohama, before the start, the “Avenger” support dancer concept was explained in the lore, and the concept thanks to communication and a maintaining of the 3-member formation brought Babymetal out of dark times brought about during 2018. Babymetal seemed to have returned to its roots with the Avengers, as 2 of the three (Kano and Momoko) come from Sakura Gakuin. The third Riho, went to the same performing arts school as Suzuka during the same time, Actors School Hiroshima aka ASH. Music Videos of this Era Pa Pa Ya Elevator Girl Shanti Shanti Da Da Dance (Avenger confusion) Which Avenger one sees can be confusing for those new to Babymetal. For the Music Videos, Pa Pa Ya, Elevator Girl, and Shanti Shanti Shanti, it is Kano Fujihira, who was just 14 years old at the time. Da Da Dance is a compilation of Momoko and Riho and a splicing of 2 different shows. In most fan cam videos of the American and European tour it would be either Riho or Momoko, as they toured with Babymetal in 2019. Kano had responsibilities with Sakura Gakuin as its president, a position Suzuka and Moa both held in Sakura Gakuin, and she’s never flown on a plane before. Some fans for 2019 did throw a stupid temper tantrum over the use of new Kami Band members who are from the west now known as the West Coast Kami Band, but like how the girls won over many, so did they and the payoff with the Legend Metal Galaxy concert in 2020 was well worth it.

These young ladies have been at it for a long time now. Basically, they started in 2010 as a sub unit of Sakura Gakuin (Japanese Idol training group). They have been a separate act since 2013. Sumetal (lead vocals) is 25, Moametal (dance and backing vocals) is 20. Yuimetal (dance backing vocals) left for health reasons in 2018. They just added a permanent third this year, Momometal, who is 20.
