I think it was their punk background. They brought a lot of that over in the feel. Sure, it is straight hip hop but they have that vibe you get from bands like Quiet Riot or Twisted Sister.

The videos off Licensed to Ill are all very satirical and have a very party, rebel vibe. Girls, Fight for Your Right, Hold it Now Hit It, Brass Monkey, Paul Revere, Rhymin and Stealin, She’s Crafty..they’re videos get really cinematic when Spike Jonez hooks up with them..Sabotage is like a movie. They wrote their music, made the beats, played the instruments, made their own album art..❤️🔥

Yeah, that's really what Licensed to Ill was, as an album - a pisstake - and the videos reflect it pretty squarely on the head. I remember an old Spin article/interview from the 90s where they talked about how guys would come up to them like, 'My dudes, I listened to your record all the time and smoked so much dust,' and they were like, 'It was a joke. Sorry you didn't get that.' They swerved in a more earnest, experimental direction with Paul's Boutique, and the videos started to reflect that, as well. And then, yeah, you're bang on with their 90s videos getting more imaginative and ambitious, particularly with Spike, but also Hörnblowér, may he rest in peace. In many ways, he defined the creative spirit of their videos, from the hand animated Shadrach video, to his 30-minute star-studded pisstake of their 86 pisstake, in the Make Some Noise video (AKA Fight for Your Right Revisited), as well as inspired takes on everything from Kaiju to 60s Italian crime drama in his Hello Nasty era, Yauch...er, I mean, Nathanial...established the group's overall video style as fun and nostalgic, and increasingly retrofuturistic.

Licensed to Ill is still one of my favorite albums of all time. They were instrumental in hip hop entering the mainstream, so I’m glad to see them getting their due. No Sleep Till Brooklyn, Paul Revere, or Hold It Now Hit It would be good ones from that album. If you notice, Eminem’s Kamikaze cover is a tribute to that album as well.

I love the Beastie Boys because they started off as a punk punk in the early 80’s and then in the mid 80’s started to incorporate rap and became one of the forefathers of hip hop and great MCs and performed their own instruments, I love the live versions when they are playing the instruments and spitting at the same time

I love old school rap groups that traded bars back and forth... Run-DMC, The Fat Boys, EPMD, and the Beasties of course. I was about 13 when their first album came out, hit me right in the sweet spot. Ever listen to Run The Jewels? Modern day Run-DMC, amazing beats, trading bars... check out "Ooh La La" or "Nobody Speak".

just think… if it weren’t for these 3 white dudes, we might not have LL Cool J 😬 Ad-Rock was the one who discovered LL’s demo and gave it to Rick Rubin. they hung out together back when Rubin was in college and had just started the Def Jam label. LL and Chuck D were the ones who gave the induction speech when the Beastie Boys made the rock and roll hall of fame. there’s a video of it on youtube, and it’s pretty awesome to see two of the most influential and respected rappers to ever do it talk about the BB 💜

I’ve always assumed Chuck D is saying “Yeah, you can’t front on that” in this song, but I can’t find any confirmation on that. Edit: And Ad-Rock is doing some obvious Flavor Flav “seizure dance” moves in this video.

Beasties record Paul's Boutique is worth checking out the whole thing or at least a few tracks. When it came out it held the record for most samples of any album (still might hold the record?) They collaborated with the Dust Brothers that produced their beats and its just a mad collage of sounds. Car Thief and B-Boy Bouillabaisse (multiple shorter tracks) are my fav from Paul's Boutique.
