This song came out in 1980 when "New Wave" music started to take off. I think the song's meaning was looking at how fast music changed back then and got categorised into "Genres" by the media. It made music kind of Tribal back then, but Billy's message was: It's still Rock n Roll to me. In other words, stop fighting with each other and just listen to the god damn music ;)

Recorded a couple of years after the explosion that was punk! I think during the late 70's a lot of established artists thought it was "game over" for them. I always thought this song just Billy saying new wave, punk, dance music are all at the end of the day just Rock n roll and there is room for all these genres and more will come and go.

Rock-N-Roll is NOT a "thing", it is an "ATTITUDE". It doesn't matter what version of rock-n-roll you are into... as long as you still have that 'youthful rebellion" side, you still have the right attitude to enjoy the music that "gets to you and gets you going".

I'm so glad you mentioned the debates we often see.... People saying "no this doesn't qualify as that kind of music because it's, from a month beyond... Or too many band members.... Or somebody's wearing the wrong sweater" - are all just polishing their collectible action figures. Good music is what you guys bring, and you make me smile several times during the week.

Thanks for using a posting of the song showing the lyrics! never knew Billy referenced the Beau Brummels (a 1960s band) in the lyrics. Glass Houses is my favorite Billy Joel album. Think he was trying to increase his fan base, by releasing an album that had songs with a harder edge (more rockers). Before this, he was known mostly for his ballads.

All the songs are great including "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman", "Vienna", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" etc. Also like "An Innocent Man" album. This album, and specifically this song, was a reaction to the new sound of radio rock that appeared on the scene in a BIG way in mid-late 70's; namely New Wave, punk rock's more radio-friendly offspring.

Used to listen to this on cassette in the 90's. He has many hits including "Pressure" which you both may like. I didn't know what a Beau Brummel was: a typical or extreme dandy and a man's dressing table of 18th century design with an adjustable mirror, side leaves, and many small drawers or compartments
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 2 жыл бұрын
Not trying to be a dick here but that dressing table must have been named after Beau Brummel, who was an actual real person from Regency England in the 1700s, and was a bit of a fancy Dan fashion icon of his day. I suppose it would be similar to referring to someone contemporary in a song as a bit of a Casanova.
