Pretty straightforward song about how all our lives we deal with pressure from everything in life. How it starts from a young age and continues throughout your life. The only way to deal is to accept and face it rather than run from it.

I love AN INNOCENT MAN album, but THE NYLON CURTAIN is something special. The songs ALLENTOWN, LAURA, PRESSURE and GOODNIGHT SAIGON are masterful pieces of work.

I’ve seen Billy Joel in concert, really great! He even played the piano with his butt lol hilarious. Memorable concert at MSG in the 90’s River of Dreams Tour 🎹🎶✨💫

I saw Billy in 1990. Two encores. Great show and great performance. He was joking around the whole show inbetween songs, great sense of humor.

A really fun Billy Joel video is Matter of Trust. It's got a very different vibe than this; but, it's a wonderful snapshot of NYC's Lower East Side (St. Mark's Place) in the late 1980s. If you do wind up watching it, here's an interesting bit of trivia to keep in mind: there are only two people on that street who are planted actors. All the other people are just passers-by who got a really big, fun surprise. The lady in the window yelling is not an actress, either. She was for real. Anyway, great reaction. I love Billy's vids too.

One of my favorite videos! I live in NYC, but I wish I could have lived here in those days, I know it was rough but it seemed to have a certain magic to it.

@@ninja_tony I lived there as a kid in the 70s; it had a kind of character to it that's hard to explain now. But maybe that's part of why I like that video so much. That and those groovy looks; people just doing their own thing; I don't know if it was as much the city as the pre-internet world; but people just seemed more animated and more interesting; grittier, but more tangible, too.

The drums are slammin! Liberty De vitto a big part of the sound in a lot of Billy,s hits! His band were so great! Doug Stegmeyer bass,Richie Canata sax,David Brown guitar,Russell Javors guitar and Phil Ramone producing!

Billy Joel is one of my top favorite artists of all time and I'm glad you've been delving into his work. For this one though, I always kinda thought it was obvious, as Billy is constantly yelling PRESSURE at you, lol. Like the struggles of real life bearing down on you. The lyrics are berating someone who is too naive and sheltered (Sesame Street and Time magazine, the media and entertainment are basically their only perspectives, not real experiences) and unable to cope with...well, the pressure! I know I've felt that way, on both sides of the coin. Btw, "In the ninth, two men out and three men on" is probably the best baseball analogy song lyric ever.
