This song means so much to me and this video actually saved my life. I was about 1 year and a half years into my recovery from alcoholism, I was coming off of my pink cloud and was dealing with a lot of pain. One day I took my shotgun and put my put mouth on the barrel, I began pulling the trigger when the harmonica from the beginning of the song came roaring through my head. I paused, I started to remember this video and the scene that made me put down my shotgun was when the police came to inform his mother that they had found her sons body in the river. I stopped because I couldn't do that to my mother. Today I'm over 32 years sober, and I work for a rehab center in Nashville Tennesse. I will always be grateful that Billy not only wrote this song but made such a beautiful video.

This song was written to help teenagers dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts. Billy attempted suicide when he was younger. Quite an upbeat song with the usual outstanding quality of a Billy Joel tune, packed with fabulous instruments. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jami. Outstanding. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The video was based on an old classic Christmas movie call “ A Wonderful Life”, staring Jimmy Stewart. Billy once attempted suicide himself by drinking furniture polish. He’s a life long manic depressive which is now called bi - polar. He’s always been very open and sharing that about himself to his fans.

I remember this being a very unexpectd HIT back in the 80s, is there anyone better than Billy Joel?

Strange in all these years I never saw the video to this song. The video has a "It's A Wonderful Life" vibe to it. I noticed the name 'George' on his grave marker.

Thank you Jami, if I can call you that. I also thought of the movie 'It's a Wonderful Life'. I remember the song well but somehow never saw this video. It is very 80's and post 'Back to the Future' in style. Also ... I stood on a rooftop in San Francisco in 1991. Wanting to end the pain in me. I had a great life before that and came crashing down. But I made a decision to stay and not try that again. Again, thanks. 😘 At the time, in 1988, I just heard an encouraging refrain. I never heard this song in the way it is portrayed in the video.

One of my favourites, as it played on the radio quite a bit when I was younger. I love all the boxing metaphors. You may know this already, but the kid's friend with glasses (Who almost drowns) is played by Adam Savage from the TV show MythBusters and You Tube's Tested channel.

Billy once shared his own failed suicide attempt when he was young. He drank furniture polish as I recall.......no doubt this saved a few lives. I like the fun element of this video also, you're right. Compare this to REM's Everybody Hurts, while a beautiful song......with a heartfelt message very somber. You watch this and you just can't help but smile.
