My favorite Billy Ocean song is “Lover Boy”. I used to blast this when it came on the radio. There’s something about the cadence of the song that’s addictive.

Billy Ocean is a Trinidad & Tobago-born British recording artist who had a lot of R&B pop hits in the 70's-80's. Caribbean Queen was his biggest hit & he scored two Grammy Award nominations for it & won for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1985. Some of his other songs are "Love Really Hurts Without You", "When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going", "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)" etc.

When the going gets tough and Get outta my dreams were both No. 1's in Australia and the UK and probably everywhere else too so I'd think that they were bigger hits than Caribbean Queen was. That was still top 10 everywhere else though.

This song is about a beautiful and exotic woman who seduces the singer. The first version of this song was titled "European Queen (No More Love On The Run)" and released in the UK. In went nowhere, so Ocean and his team edited the song, changing it to "Caribbean Queen." This version was a hit in both the US and UK. A third version, "African Queen," was made for that continent. This song was actually released twice with different titles before it became a hit, it was released as African Queen then European Queen, but both times failed to chart, then became a massive hit as Caribbean Queen

That one riff Asia is talking about sounds like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" If you listen to Billy Ocean's "Suddenly", there is the original '80s version and a newer acoustical version and both are worth checking out.

Mid 80s I was a 19 year old young buck checking IDs at the door of a Nightclub..... Wednesdays and Fridays were "Ladies Night".... club was ALWAYS packed, and when the DJ spun this track the asses were shakin' on the dance floor.... Good times.... I'd turn the clock back to 85 in a heartbeat! Why? Because we ALL GOT ALONG....

Billy is a fantastic rabbit hole to go down. Please do the official video for When the Going Gets Tough the Tough Get Going. A great song from the movie Jewel of the Nile - and the video has it's stars Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny Devito as Billy's backup singers. Funny and great video. Get Outta My Dreams and Into My Car is also a great song from the AMAZING movie License to Drive - which you NEED to do on your movie channel. Pretty please :). Loverboy and Suddenly are also two of his greats.

When you talk about the riff at 2:33, you have identified a popular sound of funky Rhythm Guitar playing in the 80's. A lot of the same session players played on albums for many artists in the 80's. The best ones (some were rock players) laid down their talents for M.J, Madonna, Luther and many more. Funky/Dance/Soul Guitar playing had this kind of sound and technique in the 80's, it had evolved to this sound and style and it worked well for those genres.

This song was a PHENOMENON when it was was released. It really established Ocean as a bonafide star and hit maker. The success quickly parlayed "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going" as being the highlight song on the Romancing The Stone sequel The Jewel of The Nile. This is one of my favorite songs of Ocean's as well as "Love Zone".

When released in Africa he actually had African Queen not Caribbean Queen in the song so we grew up callingvthe song African Queen which when you hear it sounds better.
