★ ABOUT ME ★
Hi I'm Doe, I live in England with my partner and our little jack russell. I make KZfaq videos about all the things I love, so you will see a lot of Beatles and Queen related content, music reviews and reactions, vinyl record hauls and unboxings and showing my record collection. Also we are both vegan and love plants and love growing our own food on our allotment and tasting new vegan food. I love art so you will see some creative projects on here as well as fashion, especially from the 50s/60/70s, I love that vintage style. I also vlog from time to time, especially if I'm travelling or showing you parts of England, hiking in the country, out on the motorbike or exploring a medieval castle.

Brian says (2022, Uncut magazine): "The lyrics were actually based entirely on a romance I had in Brighton. Me and Roger went down to Brighton and met two girls in our very, very early days. Life is all about romance, isn't it? I've never been very good at it! But you can't exist without those yearnings and desires. The solo on that song has really developed a life of its own - it's a sonic adventure. I was fascinated by the ideas of delay and canon - of playing a riff on my guitar, hearing it back and then playing a harmony line on top of that. Nowadays the likes of Ed Sheeran use looper pedals, but I had to build my own! There used to be a thing called an Echoplex, a tape machine with heads on it, but you could only get short delays on it. I wanted a delay of a few seconds, long enough to play along to. So I cannibalised an Echoplex and put it in a bigger box, and extended the rail on which the playback head lives. I even had a pedal to work it, and a motor and pulley system! It was a bit hare-brained, a bit Heath Robinson, and it wasn't stable enough to use on tour. So we simplified it a bit, put the head in a fixed position, so that it would play a delay of a second and a half. And I'd add a harmony on top of that, and then another on that. It became a big part of our live shows. There's always an element of "Brighton Rock" in everything I do!" Here's the whole article: wingslovesfiction.tumblr.com/post/685807939934699520/ylly22-uncut-magazine-july-2022 If you listened to concerts, or any of Brian's solos, that's probably where you heard parts of it. :) This page also always has some info on the songs: genius.com/Queen-brighton-rock-lyrics

This was the song from the Sheer heart Attack Album that made me pick up an electric guitar. Brian is simply a master of delay and the three part harmony. It's as if Freddie just said "Go on Brian have a song where we show off your talent and the amazing tonal qualities of your Red Special" This is vintage 70's Queen!

An interesting thing to note is that the last track on Queen II (Seven Seas of Rhye) finishes with them singing "I do like to be beside the seaside". Brighton Rock opens proceedings on the following album (Sheer Heart Attack) with the same tune being whistled. (Looks like the point has already been made, but it's still a lovely little touch! Thanks for the reactions as always!)

The whole album is very very good. To me this is where Queen found their true sound. Each song is very good and certainly one of my top 5 best Queen albums. A great song with Freddie singing falsetto is 'Don't try so hard' off Innuendo, if you haven't listened to this track yet you will not be disappointed, another great song with lots of emotion and incredible vocals as always.

Epic! A band of renaissance men! I think it was the longest solo Bri wrote up to that point. Live, that guitar solo sounds like a symphony! That guitar solo has just been Brian's labor of love that started when he was with the band Smile, evolving over time to be used in the Queen track "son and daughter". In fact he even played a medley mix of Brighton rock and son and daughter at the Odeon Hammersmith in 1975. Over the years, Brian continued to evolve the solo, especially live, he added to it as he played. Live in Houston is as close to the album in length and similarity you can get, while live at Earls court (he even plinks a few bits of "three blind mice"), live killers, Wembley, Budapest and onward are longer and completely mind-blowing! It's this musical tapestry he even wove into the full guitar solo track from the 90's "last horizon", to a completely new track he wrote for Nasa in 2019 called "new horizon". During his most current guitar solo during the Rhapsody tour is out of this universe! From what I've seen on youtube, Brian stands on this huge, really tall platform (made to look like he's standing on an asteroid) in front of this huge screen that video projects outer space, etc and the solo consists of bits of Brighton Rock, Last horizons and his latest New Horizons composition and some of Antonin Dvorak's" New world" symphony blended in. BTW, Please react to some of his solo work (live and album).

Born and bred in Brighton and funnily enough, was there at the weekend for the first time in nearly 3 years ( I live in Spain now), this epic Brian masterclass was written for me. Anyway, that´s what I thought when I played this back in the 70´s. Saw Freddie & The Boys in Brighton in ´79 and you can just imagine the reception this got ! As others have said, check out the Live version, it´s absolutely monstrous. Lovely reaction Doe as always.

I absolutely loved this album. Highly underrated, preceded A Night at the Opera but you can hear the seeds of that album in Sheer Heart Attack. I especially loved how Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist, and Lily of the Valley all played as almost one whole song. Definitely an album to listen to start to finish.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, finally being exposed to Queen. Queen 2 was the first album I listened to. Which led me to this album. Reading the lyrics blew my mind. The first time I had been exposed to Regency era speech. I just thought that was how the English spoke normally. I began to be critical of song lyrics from other popular bands which were too simple. I absolutely loved the song structure and elevated lyrics that Queen composed.

Love this song so much. The album live killers had a longer version of this which is worth a listen. The band walked off for a break when Brian and Roger were doing solos. One thing about this track on KZfaq that really annoys me is the balance - the lh (??) channel is really quiet and it ruins the song for me. I heard this first when I was in primary school and have loved it so much I bought the kit to learn how to play it - fab. Ps I am from lincs too - south part near Spalding - check out the epic concert there in the late 60s - Jimmy Hendrix and cream performed amongst others - unbelievable for a town selling tulips!!

Such a good choice, Brian’s playing is phenomenal on this track, right up there with anything he’s done IMO. The album itself is probably my favourite of theirs and to me marks a moment when they realise what they’re about as a band after the first two albums (which I really think are great but I get the impression that they were searching for their sound at that point). If you’re looking for a sound of summer, give Seaside Rendezvous a listen it’s a very fun, throwaway cheeky song but brilliant.

This song kicks off Side 1 of Sheer Heart Attack, As somebody who bought this album the next week after first listening to A Night At The Opera in 1975, I kind of knew what to expect, but I imagine the surprise of somebody in America in 1974 who'd only ever heard "Killer Queen" on the radio. Imagine that listener thinking, "Oh, this is that clever group that did "Killer Queen", this will be a delight!" And then they hear how much QUEEN ROCKS for the first time. and then Killer Queen follows it.

Thanks for posting this reaction, Doe, it was great (as usual). Nice to hear some early Queen too, their sound evolved a great deal from the late '70s onwards, it's almost like pre-Bohemian Rhapsody and post-Bohemian Rhapsody, they're sound changed so much, I've always felt that 'Now I'm Here' was a mix of their styles as a track, on the one hand you have tracks like this and 'Seven Seas of Rye' and the stuff like ''You're My Best Friend'. I might be good to check out stuff from their early albums more as it often gets overlooked. 🙂

@@DoeDarling Yes, as I said it's different from their music which came a bit later, it's like how The Beatles did too, their very early recordings change throughout their career as the band's sound grew, the same was true for Queen as well. It's so great that you play and react to it as it seems to be a bit forgotten about now. 🙂

Amazing reaction my friend Doe!!...In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you..It is a more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mKqIZqmZ0t-ykZc.html

This song gave us the many solos played live. The best ones are Xmas eve 1975, but the finest is from the live killers album which is made up of 3 nights in Paris 1979.

Loving all your Queen(my second favourite band) reactions but it could be cool to mix it with a few other bands/songs as well as there are some other amazing ones out there. A few ideas that I think you might enjoy are Wish You Were Here or Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd (they are my favourite band), Hurt by Jonny Cash, Sound of Silence by Disturbed, Zombie by The Cranberries, Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit just a few ideas to be going on with 😉. But loving your channel and your vids so keep up the good work and being you x

Find a live performance of this where Brian lets the other 3 take a break while he performs a very long solo with single and double delay harmonizing with himself. In the studio, this was done using multiple reel to real tapes with the tape going through two machines to make a single, and for the Prophet's Song, three machines were used to make double delay, which Freddie mastered quickly. Another fun fact to this song, is it's the first song on their 3rd album. The last song on their 2nd album, Seven Seas of Rhye, ends with the similar sounds that are the intro here, and some consider it to be a continuation, but I have never seen anyone create a mashup to see how they would sound together. Then there is the album title, Sheer Heart Attack. The title track to this album is three albums later News of the World, right after We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, and it is a very interesting Roger Taylor song. Roger also wrote and sang the title track to Jazz, More of that Jazz.

the list of Queen songs that share elements with Brighton Rock and Blag(the solo) are far too many to list. The solo section began being developed at least as early as the Smile era. When I saw them in 82 the solo was inside of Son and Daughter.

Hey, Doe - I think at first it reminds one of "keep yourself alive" -until you realize how much better and more intricate it is... I hope you get around to Brian's latest video on Tenerife... thanks! (yes.. so Brian.. but Freddie doing those crazy octaves.. right?)

You have to do "Modern Times Rock & Roll" live. (not the one at the Rainbow. That one is good, but the visuals on the other one are better). Veo La Musica is the channel that has it.

CONFESSION: I have never listened to this! (Which sounds AWFUL, from a hardcore Queen fanatic.) I've seen live snippets, but I don't think I've heard the whole thing. My weird reason: I know there's not an infinite number of songs sung by Freddie, and I want to stretch out - as long as I can - the surprise of hearing something "new"... kinda like waiting for Christmas! But, I decided that if I'm going to give in and listen to something new, I should hear it with Doe. I hope Missy is okay in the heat!
