I was in high school in the '70s in a somewhat failing industrial town in the Northeastern US. And Thunder Road was my anthem. Has some of my favorite lyrics of all time. The last lyrics in the song expressed how I felt about my life: "So Mary, climb in It's a town full of losers And I'm pulling out of here to win"

"Thunder Road" is song one on side one of the Born to Run album. It was the first song you heard when you played the record and one of Springsteen's finest songs. It was no surprise at all to me that the audience knew all the lyrics. I would have been singing along too! 😃From what I understand from reading interviews with Springsteen, he took inspiration for the song from a poster he saw advertising the 1958 film Thunder Road, starring Robert Mitchum as a moonshine runner fighting to keep his family's illegal liquor business going while fending off out-of-town gangsters and zealous law enforcement officials. Moonshine is slang for illegally distilled hard liquor and a moonshine runner would deliver the booze to buyers in a car fast enough to outrun the police. The movie is pretty good, but Springsteen said he had not seen it when he wrote the song.

Not a true story but the sentiment is. About a person in a small town trying to get his girl to leave town with him. So the theme has a basis on Bruce's life - born in a small town and wanting to get out and not be held back by the town and the limited opportunities it gives. Could be any small town or his home town he sings about in My Hometown where a lot of that is autobiographical.
