Dude! Metalhead here... Never cared nothing for rap in the 90's, not a bit. UNTIL.....Walking past my brother-in-law with Gangsta's Paradise pounding out his boom box and it STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS. This will always be the song that turned my heart around and made me realize there is a raw visceral beauty in rap that cannot be defined....Only felt. Peace out!

The biggest reason the song is so unique and stands out is because it's talking about how gangster life ain't as great as it seems, sort of exposing the truth of hard life especially for black Americans. I don't even normally listen to hip hop or rap but this song still touches my heart.

@@tonybennett4159 - I already have that but it's so vastly different from Coolio's version in tone and style, that Coolio's doesn't simply translate as a word-edited version of Stevie's, in my opinion. Kinda like Sinéad O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2 U as opposed to Prince's original. Stevie's version hit me with the pleasant melody (I didn't know English at the time so the lyrics were irrelevant to my opinion in both cases) but Coolio's hit me with everything all-together. Also, it wasn't me who called it a "cool new song", it was my mother's boyfriend's daughter when she shared it with us :P

This is an amazing song, one of my absolute favorites. I've been listening to it for 30 years. And I've just recently come to realize the effects of growing up/living that way...in the hood, no money, broken home, none of us kids graduated high school...the impact those things have on you is far-reaching. These kids need a person in their life like Michelle Pfeiffer's character in "Dangerous Minds". Someone to stand up for them and teach them how to love themselves. Kinda personal to me, but the song was a profound moment in music history.

This song was a lot to me. I was growing up a white girl in the projects at the time. All my friends growing up in elementary was black. Bad neighborhood, but not horrible- until someone gang raped and beat up a Mom two doors down, and My Mom fought hard to get me and her out because she saw it deteriorating. The things this song is about I saw first hand, without being caught up in it because I had moved. I loved this movie and this song because it showed that people that are caught up in that life usually aren't evil. They just haven't been left choices that would lead anywhere, or influenced by what they grew up around.

Brilliant song composed and sung originally by the great Stevie Wonder.

I see your reaction and think, he must be pretending he never heard it. But dang, this song is old today. Not a single one of my friends growing up was ignorant of this song when it came out. It was everywhere. Yeah, I old! I enjoyed your reaction.

Great reaction Shon. This song is still the s*** after all these years. I think you did Weird Al Yankovic's White & Nerdy, you'd definitely enjoy Amish Paradise.

The intro and chorus you like is taken from a 1970s(?) Stevie Wonder song called "Pastime Paradise" which is also a song about prejudice and segregation. LOVE Coolio's version though, he will be very very missed 🙏

I have never been into rap, but I really like this! This is a playlist. It might sound funny combined with my country music, but I can get down with this...I'm opening up my interests to different rap songs, as long as they aren't raunchy, I will give them a shot...Yeah, I like this! Thanks

Great reaction, Shon! As an old, white guy, I never listened to a lot of Rap, but this was always one of my favorites. Great music, lyrics and vocals. Excellent !!
