She is a rare voice type called contralto. Russian teenager. Dee-ah-nah Ahn-koo-dee-no-vah

The singer's name is Diana Ankudinova. (Dee-anna, not like we would pronounce Diana in the US. The last name is approximately Ahn-koo-DEE-nuhvuh). She is a 17 year old Russian singer, who you just watched perform at the age of, I think 15. She is probably best known for having won two seasons of the show You Are Super, at age 14 and then again in their super season for past winners, the following year. This is a show for orphaned and/or abused children to showcase their talent - she has both of these in her past. She was happily adopted around the age of 5. Traumatized and not speaking well after her early childhood, her adopted mother took a therapist's suggestion and enrolled her in voice lessons as part of her therapy. She has flourished from there. (You can read a better summary on her Wikipedia page). Diana is a contralto, which is a rare vocal register for female performers. The result is the naturally low tones that you will hear her using in her singing. She has trained to expand her range quite a bit from there. The song you just saw her perform is Indila's Dernière Danse (Last Dance) - there is a great video for the original here on KZfaq. Some of her best performances are from the show This Is Super. I would definitely recommend Rechenka (The River), which is a song based on traditional Russian folk and ritual songs. It is an experience to listen to and well worth it, even though you won't understand what she is saying. (Plenty of people will explain in comments, though.) Most reviewers start with her performance on this show of Chris Isaak's song, Wicked Game. (It has the benefit of being in English.) Similarly, she has covered Rag n Bone Man's song Human, along with James Brown's It's A Man's World. Many people find they get blocked when uploading reactions to This Is Super. You will probably get the upload to work if you blur the video (I've also seen people put stars sparkling over the video and so on to get it to post successfully.) She has released some original songs as well as quite a few covers and is currently attending a university in Moscow, working toward a music degree.

If you listen carefully you will hear her singing in two note ranges at the same time. This is known as "Pentatonic" singing and is kind of like the Middle Eastern singers do but she has done something more organic with it. You can hear Derrière singing a low note from her throat/stomach and a higher note out of her upper throat/nasal cavity.

Kevin Neal You have discovered Diana Ankudinova. I found her a couple of years ago and simply fell in love with her voice and how she performs on stage. She never simply sings a song, she lives what the song means. Many vocal coaches and teachers have called her a contralto, the rarest of female voices. For me she ranks up there along side of Angelina as a fantastic singer and performer. Diana is more animated than most other performers, she does have theatrical experience along with vocal training. If you delve into her life's story you will realize just how important the vocal training was for her. Here she is singing in French, she is Russian but sings in many languages. Diana is not only an amazing singer but an inspiration. You can check out any of her videos and you will be amazed. Diana is blessed with polyphonic overtones, meaning she can produce more than one sound wave, just like a double reed instrument, this is brilliant! You also see Diana's acting skills. She has the ability or skill set, to become one with the song or subject of the song. In an earlier performance of this song there was a dancer, and this is why Diana turns to her left. It's also brilliant in the way she book ends this song using her head voice. Add in her amazing Dramatic Contralto voice, theatrical skills, stage presence and perfect pitch, you have the whole package, a great artistic performance. Love this, hope to see more from Diana!
