Yes, there's so many country "story" songs! Here you go for more possibilities: Bobby Gentry- "Ode to Billy Joe", Alison Krause with Union Station- "Wild Bill Jones", Gillian Welch-"Annabelle", and here's one song with 4 stories held together with a moral: John Hammond, "Get Behind the Mule".

There’s a version of Jolene that a girl did on the Voice UK about 6-7 years ago that was amazing. It was a reggae-rap version and it is out there on YT. Definitely worth checking out, it was a great homage to the amazing Dolly Parton.

Dolly was famous for her bust size. But her talent was what kept her fame and still does. Her humanitarian efforts are too numerous to count. But she doesn't advertise them. Too many songs to listen only one great one. But have you ever heard of Ricky Skaggs? Bluegrass. I suggest Blue Moon of Kentucky. It's easy to find. Love your vibe❤

Dolly Parton would be a billionaire, but she donates so much of her money. She create the Imagination Library to give free books to children from birth to age 5. She started in her home town to promote literacy, and has since been able to expand it to the entire USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. They are trying to expand it even further. She worked hard to help raise the high school graduation rate in her small hometown in TN. Dolly Parton is a queen & nobody will dispute you on it. Of all of her many causes and her generosity, her eagerness to send books to children everywhere - and to help kids go on to college that might not otherwise have gotten there - these really touch my heart. This woman has given away millions upon millions, quietly, steadily, and with only enough publicity to get the job done. She's a class act.

Anyone who actually is aware of all the good this lady does cannot help but admire her even if country music is not your thing the woman has written some of the most amazing songs over the past 59 years or so and collaborated on so many more, she is so talented, generous, and courageous women on the planet, despite the way she was treated by some she literally just went on doing what she does and she is so good at it, if only there were more people like her in the world it would be a much better place.

For more understanding of where Dolly came from, I suggest her Coat Of Many Colors. It's a beautiful, somewhat heartbreaking song explaining the poverty of her childhood and the attitude of her classmates at school because of that poverty. She didn't become bitter and angry though. It filled her heart with empathy and compassion for others.

I am ashamed to admit I hated her as a kid. I had her force fed to me along with Elvis and I hated everything country, mostly because I couldn’t escape it. But I saw her in 9-5 and was impressed by her character’s unflappable self confidence in the face of predatory sexism. Then I saw how this was kind of really just her, never dragged down by all the nonstop objectification, always a charming funny and deeply good hearted woman who pointed out her own over the top figure and basically told people “goggle if you gotta, then get past it and hear me.” It took me several years but I agree, to know Dolly is to love her.

She is a charitable soul. She also just got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She said that wasn't right, she hasn't ever done rock. And so she is putting together a rock album now with several invited rock guests on an upcoming album. Below is the clip I found about it: Parton made headlines in March after saying she was "extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated," but didn’t feel that she had "earned that right" to be recognized as a rock artist over other performers. As a result, she wanted to "respectfully bow out." But by then, ballots had already been sent out to voters. In response, the Rock Hall announced that they weren’t backing down, explaining that the organization was "not defined by any one genre." They pointed out that it had deep roots in country music, as well as rhythm and blues.

When visiting Florida 15 yrs ago, we went to a dolly show that included your supper. As the price was much the same as any restaurant, we decided to give it a go for the experience even though we were neither dolly nor country fans. OH WOW !!!! It was Dolly Parton herself that sang like an angel, chatted with the audience and had us in fits of laughter, in between crying my heart out at the most amazing lyrics. This pint sized lady, who came from dirt poor beginnings in the mountains, then came down to chat with anyone who wanted to, as we were leaving. I tried to tell her that I’d been so moved by her story and her honesty through her songs, and she said we were all the same trying to do our best to get through life. She also laughed and referred to her songs as just her little tunes. So humble. I’ve never forgotten that night, the night I met a true star who has been a wee fighter and so proud of her family and community. Fame has not ruined her, to her it’s a way that she has been able to give that she would otherwise been unable to do. And yes i continue to feel emotional when I hear her sing. ❤

The bank teller wasn't actually named Jolene. She met a little girl after a concert and asked her name and she said, "Jolene." Dolly loved the name and told her she would write a song with her name. The story about the bank teller is true, but exaggerated, but the name Jolene came from a little girl she met after a concert. She told the little girl she loved her name and she was going to write a song with it... repeated the name in her head all the way back to the bu and had the chorus, "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene," worked out by the time she got to a pencil.

Dolly's such a classy lady. Even when she writes a song about a woman she's angry at, she just sounds like she's writing a love letter to her. Most songs like this are filled with hate and puffed up insecure pride. Instead, she's humble and genuinely begging her to please not do what she's doing. It shows, I think, that her love for him is real and this isn't just about competition or being scorned.
