The American rock band the Eagles first compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has just surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time. the Eagles' Hotel California is now certified 26-times platinum, which places it right behind Thriller.

I grew up in the 70's and I classify anything that was played on FM radio stations as Rock, things weren't broke down like they are today. It's classic Rock and it drives me crazy that people always want to find a genre a band belongs to. So for this old guy it's just Rock and for people today maybe soft rock. Of course you don't know what was played on FM stations.

@ffjsb

"Rock" is a LARGE umbrella of other smaller genres. And a band can play several different "rock" genre's in their catalog of music if they're diverse. And many rock songs incorporate several genre's in one song. This one for instance has a reggae beat to it. There's nothing wrong with breaking songs or bands down into genres, it can help you find other similar music you may like.

Only because Randy wasn’t sure he could hit those super high notes every night singing that song.. I believe one particular night he absolutely refused to play it, I think the encore, because he just felt he could not hit those high notes that night. Henley and fry be rated him and I think even physically started to assault him and he quit on the spot. Too bad. He was a wonderful player, fantastic singer and also seemed the nicest and down to earth of the band. Everyone’s right the live vocal of take it to the limitIt’s just unbelievable! Don Henley , drummer and co-writer said in an interview that this song was inspired by an old 1960s' TV show called, "Twilight Zone". They wanted to give the song a mystical other worldly feeling. The lyric is ambiguous enough that the listener can read just about anything they want to into it. Great song writing!

Don Felder driving that double-neck Gibson, exchanging solos and harmonies with Joe Walsh on his Telecaster. It's a pure time machine, shooting me back 45 years to high school days, long hair, bell-bottoms and figuring out the mysteries of the opposite sex (well, more like _wanting_ to figure than very much actual figuring). Great reaction!

Great reaction, I agree. The band broke up and swore they would only get back together when/if Hell freezes over. Don Henley had several solo hits, including Boys of Summer. But so did Joe Walsh, remember Life's Been Good ("My mazerati does 185, I lost my license now I don't drive". Some years later the band did get back together and they called it The Hell Froze Over Tour. :)

GREAT REACTION. The EAGLES WERE GREAT. This song is from 1977, and here is some history of the song. I am older, I am 72 years old. I lived through this. This was my era and my generation. The cry of our ERA, was "SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL" The reference to 1969 was WOODSTOCK. See, the hippie and yippie movement started in California. It was the time of "FREE LOVE and WEED." Hotel California offered and provided EVERYTHING you wanted or needed. "We are all just prisoners here of our own device." Mirrors over the beds, sex. Alcohol, "The FEAST on the bed, was cut with a knife" the BEAST was DRUGS. (FEED YOUR ADDICTION, (THE DRUG OF THAT DAY WAS HEROIN) Stay as long as you want or leave anytime, (but you NEVER leave your ADDICTION behind). In 1977 they sang about these things in code or EXAMPLE, or they would have been CENSORED and never played on any radio station. In an interview in 2007 the Eagles admitted they themselves were drowning in these temptations, just as ALL of California was. GO BACK AND LISTEN AGAIN TO THE SONG, You will see that I am correct.
@Vinnie-cv5qv
@Vinnie-cv5qv 2 жыл бұрын
This is one explanation of the song Hotel California.. This song is about the [Halfway House] or rehabilitation center of the rich and famous drug and alcohol abusers known as the [Hotel California]. The hotel is for the rich and famous drug and alcohol abusers. "And I was thinking to myself [this could be heaven or this could be hell]." This refers to what he will be subjecting himself to during the very painful withdrawal process. And the hours-long epileptic-like seizures his body will be going through to rid the body of its drugs and alcohol in his system. "Her mind was Tiffany twisted she got the Mercedes Benz. She has lots of pretty pretty boys she calls friends." Tiffany's is world-famous for its fine and very expensive jewelry. She is wealthy with very expensive taste in cars and jewelry. And her friends are actors, models and rich kids. "How they danced in the courtyard Sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember Some dance to forget." This refers to the painful and gut-wrenching withdrawal process one must go through to rid themselves of the drugs and alcohol they have in their system. "So I called out the captain "please bring me my wine" we haven't had that spirit here since 1969." Refers to the Woodstock era of "Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll." "And still those voices are calling from far away wake you up in the middle of the night just to hear them say... Welcome to the Hotel California what a lovely place what a lovely face. Plenty of room in the Hotel California. They living it at the hotel California what a nice surprise bring your alibis." In every halfway house or rehabilitation center. The staff along with past drug and alcohol abusers who are counselors and to are part of the staff...Always welcome you with open arms anytime day or night. "What a nice surprise bring your alibis." This refers to the many excuses the abusers will give to the staff. As to the many reasons why they became addicts. "Mirrors on the ceiling, pink champagne on ice. And she said we are all just prisoners here, of our own device, and in the master's chambers they gathered for their feast they stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast." Last thing I remember I was running for the door I had to find the passage back to the place I was before. Relax said the night man we are programmed to receive you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave!" Mirrors on the ceiling refers to the big room where all the addicts gather to receive their drug substitutes to ween them off of the hard drugs. Pink champagne on ice refers to the drug substitute 'Methadone" which is a liquid and is pink in color. The drug and alcohol addicts are prisoners of their own self-destruction. And they themselves are to blame for letting themselves become drug and alcohol abusers. The Beast is the "Drug and Alcohol Addiction" an addict will have to live with for the rest of their lives. The addict will never be rid of the addiction. It will be a constant battle for the rest of their lives to live drug and alcohol-free. You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave refers to "Once an addict always an addict!"

At age 77 I have been a fan of good music like this since my teen years. I say "like this" because a good dam song is a good dam song no matter what "genre" it may fall into. So many (mostly) young people seem to be fixated on deciding exactly what hole each peg fits into when it comes to music. I suppose that living thru the evolution of popular music as I have, has made me realize that what evolves from each musical era from the 50s thru the 80s has been, largely, the best of it's time. What people have liked then has surfaced now, and that is what fans of every reactor tend to recommend for the playlist. Yes, there are different kinds of music, to a degree, but not so much so that categorizing is essential. Just play, listen, react - if you hate it, say so. But if you love it, you will likely say so with a lot of feeling. And that, dear Reactor, is the reason we are all here. Thank you for this reaction, Jordongk, you have another subscriber!

Every member can sing lead. I've seen them twice and they give you goosebumps constantly with guitars and harmonies. Incredible talent on one stage.

That guitarist, With bandana, played for steely Dan live shows. The other guitarist ,Felder, wrote the melody. It is a fusion of Latin reggae country rock as Glenn described it. All members of the band sang except Don Felder only sang backup. The lyrics are the greatest ever written in my opinion, they evoke primordial images in the psyche. What Carl young called archetypes, I thing the writers(Glenn and Don) well knew this. They tell a mysterious tale we can all somehow relate to. Ambiguous like our fleeting memories, yet so powerful we keep dwelling endlessly on the meaning they have to us.

I grew up listening to them. Being a hippie myself, my generation was all about music. The Eagles were in a category all by themselves: a little rock, a little blues, and a whole lot of call it what you want tunes! 😝♥️

When guitarist Don Felder brought this guitar riff into the songwriting process. They remarked that it sounded like 'Mexican Reggae' so your hunch was right.

Reggae definitely. When Don Felder (the guy with the beard and double neck guitar) wrote this, he said it had elements of reggae. When they performed it for MTV in 1994, he played a Mexican kind of intro to it

One of the most successful rock bands of all time. Been performing for about 50 years. Still touring. A MUST go to see their live performance. Multitudes of posts on You Tube for you to see and learn about them. There is a catalog of a couple of hundred songs, many hits, that you must listen to.

The Eagles are in their own category. Very versatile. It's also a band made up of lead singers capable of backing each other beautifully. Give Take it to the Limit a listen.

Very perceptive of you to hear the reggae influence of this song.. I believe it's a combination of the beat (bass and drums) and Don Henley's singing cadence and emphasis on pronunciation.

You have to remember this was long before any auto tune or backing track , Bands of this era and those before them relied on one thing only and that was talent and they had it in spades, These people worked hard playing every dead end Bar they could find that would pay them to play, There they learned their art and craft and hoped vainly in some cases that they would be talent spotted, And all they had was their talent their instruments and a Van to live out of.
