The music on the whole album was played by Art Of Noise, another project of Trevor Horn, the producer of that album. That’s the same Trevor, who once replaced Jon Anderson as a frontman of Yes in the early 80s, then produced their two next albums and was part of The Buggles duet.

That IS an epic piece! The (double) album was HUGE even here in Switzerland. For me as a teenager who just discovered pop and rock music hardly a year before it was an eye opener and the first time that I heard a side-long track (together with Mike Oldfield's Crisis). For me this album is still the quintessential 80s LP: disco, punky, proggy, synthpop, new wave etc all in one. FGTH were from Liverpool and the only of only two bands who got their first 3 singles to Nr 1 in the UK. The other one as also from Liverpool and did it exactly 20 years earlier: Gerry and the Pacemakers. Frankie were paying respect to them by covering their Ferry Cross the Mersey.

From Buggles to Yes to this - the genius of Trevor Horn. When I first heard this track aged 14 my mind was totally blown and I rank it among my most treasured musical experiences.❤❤ And on the same cassette, “Relax,” “Two Tribes,” and more. A brilliant album. A few years later, I got very deep into prog and after that trance music. The seeds were sown with stuff like this (and War of the Worlds) 😊 Ok, off we go ❤

I once heard a raw demo of "Relax", from before Trevor Horn produced the final version, and it's unrecognizable. That bass line is one of the defining moments of the 1980s - so much that it was used to set the atmosphere of the time in the legendary, award-winning Virgin Atlantic 25th anniversary commercial (look for it here on KZfaq) - and it was totally Trevor's idea, as well as the now iconic whips and splashes. And don't forget the most successful phases of the careers of Grace Jones, Propaganda, Seal, and many others. We owe Trevor a lot.

There is a live version from a 2004 show they were a part of.. Holly Johnson did not join them but the singer they had was just as amazing. They sang their 3 biggest hits to close out the show which had tons of other great stars that had been produced by Trevor Horn. I still listen to their songs a few times a week. There are different versions but the ones I am the most used to were what they had originally released as their 12" versions.

They should've been bigger in America, because everyone loved their sound and their vibe, but they were a "gay" act, open about it, and while it was acceptable in the the UK, only colleges and inside the clubs were they promoted in the states. Several of their videos were banned from MTV, which didn't help. The few times they got regular airplay their songs were wildly requested. This one was too long for most radio except late at night sometimes on FM stations that played cool longer pieces after midnight. This song is in its own space, it doesn't sound like other songs really, a bit of Queen, a bit of Alan Parsons, perhaps some Steve Winwood, and some Jackson 5 dance grooves. The atmospherics are very cinematic, and the "boardwork" of the studio mix with ambient sounds and squeaks and squonks of instruments played as percussive sounds is very experimental and very "Art of Noise".

So epic, this is 10/10 for ambition if nothing else, but it hits it's mark too. That No 2 placement in the UK chart shouldn't be underestimated, it followed 3 huge No 1s, Relax almost got there twice, Two Tribes was there for months and Power of Love was a Christmas hit, only kept off the top at Christmas itself by Band Aid and Wham at their peak (Holly made it onto Band Aid's B-side) The feat of a debut hat-trick of Number Ones hadn't been achieved since Gerry and the Pacemakers 20 years earlier and wouldn't be beaten until the Spice Girls a decade later, so the No 2 came very close to glory. The Welcome to the Pleasuredome album is production heaven from beginning to end, a couple of the cover songs on it depend heavily on ol' Trevor. Overall it's a huge landmark in British pop culture, the sound was ubiquitous at the time. Very happy memories, thanks again.
@goytabr

They could have laughed at me, too, Brandon, because I was a late comer to the FGTH bandwagon, too. Of course, when "Relax" appeared, it took the world by storm (or by a tsunami-sized electronic splash), no one could escape it anywhere, but I didn't complain because I loved it from the beginning (though pure and naïve young me took some time to grasp the highly indecent and almost explicit lyrics and realize what that splash was about! 😲🤣). I should have had a hint when I saw Brian de Palma's awesome "Body Double" (which includes a FGTH cameo performing "Relax" in the movie within the movie), a film that they will reference in the future when defining postmodernism - it's the quintessence of it. But it was only in the late 1990s that I really discovered the rest of FGTH, and "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", in particular, FLOORED me just like it did to you, for very much the same reasons. And as with you, the song goes so quickly, it doesn't feel so long. I think the one word that defines their music is BOLD. They DARED, sonically, thematically, in all respects. And it sounded d--- f--- good! FGTH with Trevor Horn was a match made in hell (it couldn't be in the heavens, of course), and it worked phenomenally! Another debt music owes to Liverpool, that gray English city that gave the world so much color. Shame that they were a shooting star that reached the top and didn't stop. I wish they would still giving us all that genius from the 1980s, but let's be thankful for what we have. It's amazing!

Another Trevor Horn masterpiece. You should check out his 2 Buggles albums. Start with "Living In The Plastic Age" from the first, and the haunting " I Am A Camera" from the second. Welcome to Trevor Horn's pleasure dome, him of the endless insane singles. The beginning sounds so much like ABC, one of his earlier production. He went more feral with FGTH 😂 "An harmonica, why not?", you hit the nail on the head, all of his career could be summed up by "why not". Please do Grace Jones's Slave to the Rhythm if possible. Also, Snobbery And Decay by The Act. That's Steven Lipson but the sound is orgiastic. Cheers from Paris Brandon ❤

This "Frankie goes to Hollywood" belongs to the important releases of the 80's, like Art of noise and later Propaganda. The basic recording of "Welcome to the pleasure dome" is an epic example and experience. It's a smart mix of a Synth electronics setup with more organic players "the band of Holly Johnston" and also acoustic moments with beautiful steel guitars licks by Steve Howe, as also tribal(hooha) and Funk grooves, the slapping bass lines. It cames clearly from Trevor Horn's kitchen, it seems they had a lot of fun on this one but also a long work, big laugh at the end (reminds me also parts of thriller from Michael Jackson!) Yes, you can feel the décadence, I believe it's still accurate for our world of today. Cheers Brandon, have a great day!

Although there are musical genres that I dislike (like 'new wave' for example), there are still groups that appeal to me and I can't always say precisely why. FGTH is one of these exceptions. There is another band (also British and essentially instrumental) which is nevertheless in a genre (in my opinion experimental electro/synth pop; even if several professional reviewers classify it in the 'new wave' category) very far from my musical sensibility but which I nonetheless like... especially for its avant-garde and catchily marginal creativity: ART OF NOISE. Trevor Horn was part of the group at times. Their compositions are truly unique and identifiable from the first bars. My favorite album: 'Who's Afraid of...! (The Art of Noise)?' (1984)... and especially the three exceptional compositions "Moments in Love", "Beat Box (Diversion 1)" and "Love". A magical album. Thanks.
