Freddie had always been a fan of opera and during an interview in 1986 on Spanish TV he mentioned he’d love to meet Montserrat Caballé. They met a year later and when Barcelona was picked to host the summer Olympics in 1992 Caballé was asked to produce a song and she asked Freddie to collaborate. This is the masterpiece they produced.

Montserrat was one of the top soprano opera singer ever. Born in Barcelona/Spain. Extremely good in voice control, wide range and capable to hold the high pitch even in pianissimo. Loved la Superba, as she was called, so much and saw/heard her once live. Unforgetable. Now these to very close friends sing together again in heaven.

I cry every time I hear it because it's so beautiful. After attending the opera and hearing Monserrat sing he was instantly in love with her voice and insisted upon meeting her. He wrote this and somewhere exists a demo of him singing both parts. There's a documentary with Alfie Boe where she tells Alfie about how the song was written. You should check it out.

Opera singers sing for hours without microphones at a volume that would knock you off the stage if they aimed at you. Sung correctly, they do not strain their voices, and a great singer like Caballe would be able to sing all night without harming herself. The training is completely different than other singing and what they are capable of cannot be compared to “regular” singing. Both kinds are beautiful of course, and neither should be put down in favor of the other, but I imagine Montserrat was holding back to mesh so beautifully with Freddy, who quite rightfully, loved opera. This is a wonderful performance of two worlds meeting in perfect harmony. Pavarotti did many wonderful duets with pop singers. One of my favorites is with James Brown singing This is a Man’s World.

Freddie saw Montserrat singing at an opera performance and said to his companion that He had just heard the most beautiful voice in the world. He invited her back to his house and they spent the night singing together and became friends for the rest of his life. She was DEVASTATED when he died, but now she's gone too, so they are singing tjis somewhere else together at last.

She is the soprano with best voice controlof every sopano I ve ever heard. Had privilige to see her live performance. That Freddy can keep up with her and her ability to adopt her exspession outside opera is proof we talk about true tallent of both. My opinion is that this is result of their combined energy and admiration they had between them. Freddy is without doubt best male rock singer and perforemer we ever had.

She is not repeating his words, she is singing other words. When they met, she asked him to write a song about her hometown, and this is the result. Monserrat was one of the few people told that he was dying. For a real gut wrenching experience, listen to HOW CAN I GO ON. She said that when she reaches for his hand, in the middle of that song, it was because he was close to tears, and she took his hand to comfort him. In my imagination, he is asking “How can I continue, knowing that in a few short months, I will no longer be here. How can I continue in a normal way.” And she responds, “How will I be able to continue my everyday life, knowing he is no longer here with me?” A very emotional song.

Part of the change in music over the years is the switch from albums to songs. That caused things to be missed. Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is (was) on a Queen album called "A Night At The Opera". Knowing that, the operatic parts of Bohemian Rhapsody make more sense. We Queen fans already knew where Freddie was headed or at least we knew he was thinking about it. But none of us complained, OMG opera!! Just like the boys in the band. We knew the best thing to do is step back & let Freddie be Freddie.

They made a whole album together called Barcelona. Freddie wrote the songs, with someone to help him because she’s a famous opera singer from Spain. I love the whole album, but How Will I Go On (Guide Me Home leads into it, is short but is considered a separate song), Golden Boy, and Exercises in Free Love (all Freddie…you won’t believe it’s him), are my favorite. I know their history and how they wound up doing this album, like this song was written for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. They were great friends, and Freddie first became a huge fan of hers after seeing her sing with Pavarotti … he was like an excited little boy, he loved her voice so much. He said in an interview he thought she had the best voice on earth, and she heard it, and she called him…There’s much about it on KZfaq somewhere. Thanks…I love seeing people discovering all the depths of Freddie’s musicality. 👍👍👍❤

So glad you reacted to this! He was the ultimate showman. She was the ultimate female opera soprano (Freddie said she was the best in the world). As you said, he truly respected her and deferred to her in this operatic setting, but he did his best to match her in his own unique way. For me, the most impressive moment is when he finally sings in Spanish with her, line-for-line and their voices are finally blended. I don't know another rock star that can do what he did. If you like this, check out their other duet THE GOLDEN BOY. It has opera like this, plus...GOSPEL! :)

I'm glad you bumped into this video. It shows even further that Freddie was far from one dimensional: he had a long-standing love of opera. Montserrat Caballe was one of the greatest opera sopranos from the 2nd half of the 20th Century. She was a native of Barcelona and, in 1986 when that city was chosen to host the 1992 Olympics, she was asked to dedicate a performance commentating the event. She approached Freddie to collaborate with her and a year later, 1987, the video you just watched was filmed. By the way, given that she is Spanish, her last name is pronounced ca-ba-YAY (in Spanish, a double "L" [ ll ] used to be a single, separate letter in their alphabet and sounds more like English "y" in "you," as in "Pancho Villa," not like English double "l" in "full."

Montserrat Caballé was one of the greatest opera voices EVER! In the Top 25 of all times. She was born and she passed away in Barcelona. She could speak and sing in several languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, Italian, German... She could hold an immaculate note for over 15 seconds and it said that can break a cup of glass with her voice: her voice tonality was Soprano. Look at her here even doing jokes in German: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iN6KhrNiqcmbaIU.html

OK, you drew me back with Freddie. I've been a long time fan. You're one of only two reactors I sub, but that Ben Shapiro BS was just about a deal breaker, I gotta say. Anyway Freddie and Montserrat became very good friends. Opera singers regually sing at this level for three hours in a performance over a full orchestra without microphones, so no need to worry about her overworking that beautiful voice. 🙂

Montserrat lived in Spain so she is singing in her native language though she also spoke fluent English, She was the number 1 operatic soprano at the time of this recording and until her death. She and Freddie became dearest of friends. This song is loosely based on his meeting Montserrat in Barcelona for the first time to discuss her doing one of his songs. He just wanted a tape of her voice singing one of his songs but as it turned out, she convinced him they should do an album together. She really worked with Freddie getting him to sing in his chest voice more. He learned a lot from her where voice is concerned and she learned a lot from him about writing, arranging and production.
