Hearing Bad Company's Paul Rodgers for the first time really opened up my eyes, and I had to dig into more of his catalogue. And what better way than to start with Free?! I went with a live version simply because the last was just an album cover. Let's get to it!!!

The cool thing about this band is that when they recorded this, they were all under age 20. When Free formed, Andy Frazier (bass) was 15 years old. Paul Kossoff (guitarist) was 18, Paul Rodgers (singer) and Simone Kirke (drummer) were 19. Also, Paul Rodgers is one of the best voices in rock history.

This is a real classic rock band. Paul Rodgers is one of the great rock vocalists. They performed at the Isle Of Wight festival back in 1970.😊

When the Who left the Isle of Wight, the band's helicopter flew over the garbage-strewn field in the wake of the concert and those two words popped into his head.

I saw him there too and I was conflicted. Generally I liked and I liked the combination, but they were right not to call him a replacement for Freddy. Rodgers doesn't have (or need!) the operatic clean voices and the reach of Freddy. His best moments were when they did a few Free and Bad Company songs. However much I enjoyed Queen and Paul Rodgers, I think Adam Lambert is a better fit for Queen. Which is saying nothing about Rodgers' quality. Just about the combination.

I count myself lucky to see them in Sydney on the same bill with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Deep Purple, brilliant is the only way to describe it. I was less than 20mtrs from the stage and 18, a few months later was Status Quo and Slade. Give Noddy a listen.

Looks like he's accepted those prayers, this is from last year "Asked if he is healthy now, Paul told KSHE 95: "Yeah, thank you. Thank God, really. But I do thank hyperbaric [oxygen therapy] as well, which is the treatment you can get. You just sit in there, oxygen under pressure. The only thing you feel is a little bit in your ears; it's like flying on a little puddle jumper airplane. But that's all. And then you just watch a movie for an hour and you're done. You breathe in and [the oxygen] recirculates through your brain and it's very good. It took a year and a half to get my voice back after all that stroke."

Sooooo stoked for this, Paul kossoff for me is the greatest British blues guitarist ever, Andy Fraiser was 15 when he joined the band. Which is insane. And they truly are a massively overlooked gem in the history of British music

At one of my High School dances, back in the day, it featured a local Bay Area band and Paul Kossoff showed up to play with them as he was friends with the band members. I was blown away. It was a great time to be growing up and a location for music.

Your vocal analysis videos have made my singing better. I've been singing a long time, but I never knew the real mechanics of what I was doing, and still don't fully, I just knew I needed to make my voice perform a certain way to make a particular sound. Oh man. This is such a great freaking song 10 out of 10. OK so they were still playing this song in clubs in the 80s. I will tell you specifically 1985 because I was 16 and was having the best night of my life. I met a guy. We danced for a couple of hours. He did not take me home to his place but he did take me to a hill about half a mile from the club. And we watched a meteor shower for two hours. Don’t even remember his name never saw him again. It’s just a wonderful memory and that song brings it all back every time

Simon Kirke, one of the greats. I love the recording on this as well, only 6 mics onstage (including the 2 on the vocals) and it sounds enormous. As for Simon Kirke, His daughters are actresses- Jemimah was in “Girls” and Lola was in “Mozart and the Jungle.”

I went to watch and listen to an all night concert at the London Colosseum in 1968 and the warm up band was Free. Paul Rogers was magnificent, and especially Paul Kossof's vibrato on the Les Paul Gibson guitar blew me away. The band performed all original numbers, and nothing was faster than a walking speed. Free have been one of my favourite bands this last almost sixty years, and Paul Kossof is a legend. In the seventies, all the great rock and roll bands around the world from the Beatles to the Stones and every band in between took a poll to see who they thought was the greatest rock singer, and it turned out that Paul Rogers was every bands favourite singer.

Elizabeth, Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington's main influence when he was a kid was Free guitarist Paul Kossof. To the extent that everyone acknowledged that nobody else integrated Kossof's style into a new, signature, unique hybrid style like Rossington did. I know you're more into the vocal side of things but, well, for what it's worth...and as noted by others, you haven't truly experienced Free till you hear Fire and Water.

The first 7" single I ever bought. I was young then and very impressionable. I became a professional guitarist and I used to think, how would Paul have played what I was playing? I used to try and play like Paul. I used to get a good applause. Little did they know, I was playing like him and Jimmy too!

Elizabeth, Take a listen to Fire & Water from "Free" in 1970 - live performance, great song. You can see Paul in his earlier years. Same fantastic voice, and excellent guitar tone from Paul Kossoff. Andy Fraser, the bassist was literally 16-17 yrs old. crazy

Guitarist Paul Kossoff was one of the best players in the world. He was once asked by Eric Clapton how he created his guitar vibrato, Paul didn’t answer and thought that Eric Clapton (is God) was trying to belittle him. Sadly Paul was taken from use by drug addiction and we all wonder what would have been. However Paul Rodgers’ voice has mellowed and got better and better over his career. One last fact in the video the bass play Andy Fraser was only 15/16 at the time of this TV show recording. I’m 68 and they are the soundtrack to my teenage years.

Oh I Wept by Free is a song definitely worth listening to. It highlights Paul Rodger’s dynamic range in his voice. Although everything by him is just incredible!

Seagull and Silver, Blue and Gold from Bad Company are his best! Soft and beautiful songs. If you like Paul's early stop/vocal cutoff in this song, in Silver Blue and Gold's chorus' eponymous line, the "Blue" is this cutoff that eluded my terrible but joyous attempts to sing along.

The Navy ship I was on had a double helicopter pad. 4 outdoor speakers and amps to give orders to the flight crews. They would play music on slow weekends at sea. I always ilked this one. Your reactions are always informational.

60/70s UK was such a great time for amazing voices. Absolutely love Paul Rodgers! Smooth and crispy at the same time is absolutely apt. Now I‘m just waiting for some Humble Pie and Steve Marriott. Their cover of For Your Love haunts me since I first heard it.

There's a live version of Free playing "Fire & Ice" (a *strong* recommendation) that allows you to hear & see Paul Rodgers singing... the album version is fire, as well.

One blues rock performance that has to be seen to be believed is Jeff Healey's "See The Light" on the late David Sanborn's Night Music TV show in 1988 (more for the guitar playing).

I saw Healv open for ZZ TOP in Phoenix in 90. Amazing Performance!! He finished with Voodoo Child (Slight Return) he stalked all over the stage, kicking over monitors and just tearing it up!

One of THE classic rock staples! This a great version, but the (full; there’s an edited version floating around) is definitive. Speaking of classic rock voices, I recommend checking out The Atlanta Rhythm Section. Ronnie Hammond had a great voice and he (and the band) are often forgotten. “So Into You”; “Champagne Jam”; “Imaginary Lover”; “Alien”; “Indigo Passions”; there are so many great songs.

This was part of a TV special they did and is near the end of their live set. The entire TV performance is worth watching and has many of their other hits. Simon Kirke went on to Bad Company with Paul Rodgers but unfortunately Paul Kossoff struggled with depression and passed away early. Andy Frazier lives and works in the States

Paul Rodgers is a rock god. I had the pleasure of seeing him about 13 years ago in a very small venue, and even in his 60's, he still had amazing stage presence and absolutely crushed it. You might also want to check out "The Firm" a one-off collaboration he did with Jimmy Page in the late 80's.

In 1970 when I was in 8th grade, the local DJs would bring up two singers as the best voices in rock n roll. Paul Rodgers and Burt Cummings. Love them both. This is one of my favorite rock songs of all time. Andy Frazier was 16 years old when he cowrote this song. Amazing. Thanks for doing this. Loved it.

I’ve played this song dozens of times in Rock Band, had no idea it was the same vocalist from Bad Company, but now I can’t unhear it… how’d I miss that for so long? Anyway, the difficulty rating on all the instruments is pretty low, but the vocal track is the highest in the game because of how expressive and all over the place his voice is. So much fun to sing along with.

Elizabeth, so glad you selected this one. I've always loved this song, and the groove is so totally emblematic of late 60s and early 70s rock. I heard this the first time on a boom box on the school bus going to 7th grade, and I was hooked - took guitar lessons, found friends who played, formed bands and rocked my way through high school and college - even after 40 years, this song does it for me - it's quintessential real playing from the day. Always makes me tap my feet, and usually, grab my Les Paul and join in! Thank you - great review, as usual!

Apparently Eric Clapton asked Paul Kossoff "Where did you get that vibrato?" referring to his playing style and he just answered "Practice"

One of my favorite singers of all time. Let’s just take in that the band Free were all teenagers when they started out. Free was so talented. Free was Bad Company before Bad Company. Please react to “Mr. Big” from the same show and “Fire And Water” live is killer fantastic Paul Rodgers singing and Kossoff going off on the guitar. Kossoff was never the fast guitarist but he made it up with his insane vibrato and incredible feeling.

Hello Miss Zharoff May I suggest you analyse the fine and legendary singing of Mr Roy Orbison performing the song Crying live at the monument concert from 1965, he has such a distinct and recognisable voice so angelic and beautiful that it almost leads you to tears 'pardon the pun'. You will not be disappointed, enjoy the journey.

I was lucky enough to see them play live on 26th September 1970. It was a moment that started a lifelong love of Rock an Metal. This was my wow moment. Never looked back. Still love rock music and new bands that are on the scene today. All because of Free.

This song started playing on the radio where I lived with my parents when I was a freshman in high school. My parents were appalled by the sexuality of the lyrics and after listening to it once I was forbidden to listen to it again. Of course I didn’t when they were around me but man, forbidden fruit was eaten every chance I could.

Another,if slightly more obscure, 70s rock band you might like to analyse is Family with the very distinctive vocals of Roger(Chappo) Chapman. My Friend The Sun and The Weavers Answer are perhaps two of their most famous songs, which can be found on You tube as live performances.
