While George was a Hare Krishna Hindu, he believed that all paths led to the same Lord. While some overweening zealots will say that's not the case, George believed that the Hindu God to be the same as the Christian or Judaic God, or the Muslim God. So everyone listening can enjoy this song and praise and seek comfort in the Lord, no matter what path they are taking to Him.

Love this song... and George Harrison, of course. The (not quiet as everyone says) Wise Beatle. George was Hare Krishna - Hindu - hence the lyrics not following a typical Christian theme. He (along with the other Beatles) studied under the Marharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. Unlike the rest of the Beatles, he practiced for the rest of his life. He was amazing at playing the sitar, with Ravi Shankar being both friend and mentor. You can definitely hear the influences on songs like Within You, Without You on Sgt. Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in 1967.Thanks for doing this one!!

Actually, the best celebration of George's music was after his death in the "Concert for George" headlined by his friends (and former Beatles collaborators) Eric Clapton and Billy Preston, his former bandmates in the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, his bandmates in the Travelling Wilburys, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, among others. It even included his son Dhani.

@@Tijuanabill There aren't any other "beliefs" (plural) in this song, first part is Christianity, second half is Hinduism and it was intentional. Even so much as George wanted to change his name and asked his Guru to give him a Hindu one. Anyways, he did give his only child a Hindu name "Dhani".

George literally introduced Indian music to western pop. He became fascinated during the filming of the movie Help! when he hung out with the Indian musicians on set. His Sitar playing on Norwegian Wood is the first use of the instrument in pop music. He became a student of the legendary Sitar player Ravi Shankar.

Just wanted to say I've really come to appreciate Harrison's songwriting as well as guitar/ sitar skills. I personally think he didn't get enough credit, but truth is Blackbird is actually a Lennon/ McCartney composition... All of the Beatles went to India and studied under the Sai Baba for a time. George learned how to play the sitar while there. It was a spiritual retreat, however, out of all of them, I believe George was affected most deeply and spiritually from their time there. Fun fact, Beatles song "Dear Prudence" was a song written for Mia Farrow 's sister, who was studying there in India at the same time. I would check out the song "Within without you" to really here the Eastern influence on their music.

You mentioned something that always struck me from this song that I've never seen anybody else comment on!! :D When he says "i really wanna see you, I really wanna be with you, I really wanna see you Lord but it takes so long.." it's like he's saying he wishes his life was over already so he could be with his God, which is kind of a dark thought. He loves his God so much, he yearns to be by his side every moment he's alive, and he almost resents being alive because it is what's keeping him from being with his God. The LONGING that he conveys with his voice Is disturbing, but.. also quite beautiful? It also fits his personality, as George became pretty introverted, especially the older he grew, and he even said once that he didn't much like people, and the only place he truly felt at home sometimes was when he was in his garden.

He was raised Catholic in the 40s and 50s, and this is a pretty normal topic of religious songs up to this day. He was latter interested in Hinduism, and studied quite a lot about it. Maybe it would help to know a bit about the artist’s life before reacting to the songs… this is not an unknown, obscure singer no one has heard about… this is George Harrison… the amount of information about him on the web or books is amazing.

We all are going through life thinking Oh I got this. But, in all reality we have got very little of this. Something created everything that was, is , or ever shall be, And we refer that to God, Great Spirit, Shiva Krishna Vishnu, Allah, Lord. The point is George had so much but felt empty inside so he found a path to The Great Ultimate Supreme that felt right to him, and was faithful to that. We would all be better off if we took the approach to be closer to our creator in seeking it and in our word and deeds to our brothers and sisters in creation. But George also said All things must pass. Let us pray ignorance, greed, hate , and anger will pass and wisdom, love, kindness, and compassion will remain. 🙏✌️❤️💪😁🌟

Hmm, I rather wish you'd listened to the studio version, which is perfection. This is tinny and played at double-quick time, like he had to get out to catch the last bus home. And these backing singers are terrible. This came up on another channel just the other day and I wrote something along the lines of, 'I'm a committed atheist without a spiritual neuron in my brain. But if anything was to make me Believe, it's always been this song.' I'm afraid that if this was the only version in existence, I wouldn't feel the same at all. What does that mean? Anyhow, do yourself an immense favour and find a studio copy and just let it envelop you.

Always liked this one but somehow remember it as being a bit slower. i hadn't seen it as a live performance before so maybe that's why. Your initial comments suggest that you are assuminmg the lord referred to is Christ. Fairly natural in Western thinking. This is not the case however, as the song goes on, in the recorded version, to make clear that Lord Krishna is being referred to. Krishna is one of the most powerful incarnations of Vishnu, the Godhead of the Hindu Trinity of deities. Of all the Vishnu avatars he is the most popular, and perhaps of all Hindu gods the one closest to the heart of the masses. He was dark and extremely handsome. In the recorded version of this song George also sings Hare Rama etc. The Hare Rama Hare Krishna mantra is a powerful prayer mantra that apparently makes one’s mind and soul pure and peaceful and can put one on the path to salvation and provide a spiritual connection with Lord Krishna. It can help attain a sense of consciousness and self-realization.

This was the first #1 song after the Beatles breakup, if I remember correctly. The studio version had Peter Frampton on lead guitar. I can't see this video clearly to see who is playing here. The studio version quality is much better than this one.

Your so intelligent and a good reviewer. However suicide isn't on the table. That's NOT what he's referring to. He is saying it takes so long, not because life is bad. But because we desire the Indian concept of nirvana. Perfect existence. I'm a holy messenger of God and lived the life of the Libra. I carry the scales and have saved and displaced many souls. Love and peace my brother.

Just... Man tell me you listen to the record cuts. I'm not asking you to record that, just tell me you listen to the studio versions?

Briefly....eastern religions (Hindu) require many deaths and rebirths to remove the karma that prevent the devotee from being in the presence of their God in his pure form...hence him referring to how long it takes. It's not about suicide.

Haha, kinda put the cart before the horse here. Why do you suppose Eastern religions in general, and Hare Krishna in particular experienced a surge in popularity in the West at that time? He didn't include an Eastern religion because it was "cooler," as you speculate, he made it cooler. Beatles had that kind of power to shape the zeitgeist.

As a Christian woman, I love the entire song, but can only "support" the first half 😂

George wanted to change his name to a Hindu one. But his guru (Srila Prabhupada) told him not to and rather inspire others in the west while keeping his name since he was so popular.

He's not a member of one of the biblical religions. Lord means something different in Hinduism, I think. It's just odd to think of having to die to be with the Lord from the Hindu context.

You REALLY, REALLY have a knack for picking the WRONG version of a song to listen to. It's kind of mind boggling

Too bad it's the one song he maybe inadvertently stole the melody for. But "He's so fine" isn't nearly as good a song.

Hi, My Sweet Lord sounds good, but he's not singing about Jesus, but a false god, Harrison wrote "My Sweet Lord" in praise of the Hindu god Krishna, at the end when he says My sweet Lord, he says Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Harrison was in false religion, he wasn't singing about the Lord Jesus, but to his false god Krishna,
