Oh my DramaSyde, there is such magic in this old recording. It is so pure. Hank Williams, Sr. is a classic.

He wrote about real life, mostly his life. It has been said that if couldn't finish a song in 15 minutes, he'd stop writing it. Cold Cold Heart, Your Cheatin Heart, I'll Never Get Out of this World Alive just to name a few of his songs. He also wrote one of the most well known Gospel songs ever, I Saw the Light.

My mom was such a fan of Hank’s one of my earliest memories is knowing I was born the same year Hank Williams died. Western Swing. Mom’s other heroes were Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

I am so happy to see you react to Hank Sr’s classics. It was a different era so of course it sounds less sophisticated but that shouldn’t detract from his genius. I am 68 yrs old and some of my earliest memories are of my parents playing his 78 rpm albums. I hated their music as most kids do but in my later years I’ve come to appreciate it much more.

Isn't it amazing how well this holds up, 70+ years later?? Furthermore: It sounds like old, old country music; but it's the _blues!!_ Even when it's not literally the 12 bars blue form (as here), the vibe of blues, and the blues scales, are the foundation of just about all genres of popular music from the 1940s to the end of the 20th century (though growing less so now: e.g., electronic-based styles often leave the blues way off in the rear view mirror). And here's this god of country music who was _steeped_ in the stuff!

Love Hank Sr. Great choices. Kaw Liga is another great Hank Sr. song. There are even songs about encounters with Hank's ghost. David Alllan Coe's "The Ride" and Alan Jackson's "Midnight in Montgomery". I think you would really enjoy those songs as well.

If you like this particular brand of classic country act you might try is Buck Owens, who had 21 number one hits in the '60s (post-Hank, pre-Outlaw). "Act Naturally" would be his best known, "Streets of Bakersfield" is also good (that one was also a big hit covered by Dwight Yoakam in the 80s FEATURING Buck.) Buck is a guy I don't recommend a lot to because he's very classic, but you're already in the rabbit hole so he's a BIG historical name.

I think you would probably enjoy the PBS documentary on the history of country music by Ken Burns. It's surprising how many different music styles were blended to create this uniquely American genre.

I had an old buddy..mr Joe Whitaker lol he got locked out and I swear 2010! Climbed right on in the Dog House. Big Old Bluetick looking like bud..theres only room for one of us. Never laughed so hard pulling in to pick him up 4wrk. Grown man crawling out doghouse. Less say it was a looong day. Lol Lay down with Dogs u get fleas. 😕

The origin of "Dawg"... I'm also reminded that, at the time of Hank's success and the growth of country-music was the post-WWII explosion of radio. Radio stations used to be EXPENSIVE to equip, but after WWII, that technology became much cheaper and the personnel capable of running it were abundant. And with that numeric growth - from a few hundred to ten thousand stations - came the need to fill that void. Of course, Big City USA had big-bands... 20-30-40 piece bands that required days to orchestra, then compare that to a 3-4-5 person country band. You can see how simplicity of arrangements would give country bands a big edge in producing more songs to play, more stations to fill. So Big Bands were getting beaten down and what was left would be rock-n-roll, the perversion of this dance-type 'country/hillbilly' music and taking advantage of the greater electronics of all those WWII vets coming home, saying, "I need a job - I used to do wiring in the battlefields."

Man you just heard greatness, it is a shame that Hank had a drinking and drug problems. There are no telling how many number one hits he could have had.. His his Hank Jr. is great also... Play Johnny Cash man in black, this explains everything you need to know about Cash...
