As a descendant of Slavic people I am glad to hear someone acknowledge that the word for slave literally comes from my people who were slaves. In some instances people (ottoman turksfrom what I understand) would raid the villages taking children as slaves as a "blood tax". People all over the world have experienced and contributed to slavery, what is important is that we stop it as quickly as possible and not waste time by pointing fingers at each other because YES slavery still exists today although it can look much different from the slavery of years passed.

I'm Irish and genuinely I don't get it, British invented the whole issue to begin with let's not forget that it's written in the history books. The British may be ignorant to their own history but the scars of country's once enriched with its own language and culture are carbon copies of Britain now and are tarnished because if this. Thousands of years of culture lost because of greed, that deserves to be taught, history is made and destroyed. When you have the power teach how to use it wisely in schools from using the past. 23:52 “no matter the cost”, the cost which he hasn’t gone into was a cost so high it bankrupted the nation. The cost was so large that the debt britain went Into was paid off until 2015! Therefore any U.K. taxpayer before 2015 helped fund the abolition of slavery. And for people who know a bit more the only reason the British empire ended was because it was in so much debt because of many things but two of the largest debts britain built up in was the debt from WW2 to defeat fascism and the debt from the abolition of slavery. Britain sacrificed her empire for the freedom of Europe from facism in WW2 and for the freedom of slaves in the 1800s. Quite heroic for a history so heavily demonised for its wrongdoings, funny how people forget things like this

Agreed. Thankfully Boris called out the BBC for trying to ban Rule Britannia, which they are now playing. When you consider how much Britain did in leading the abolition of slavery, that hymn in itself represents the very values of this country. We do things, we reflect, we change what we see is wrong. It's the exact principle this country followed with regards to slavery; We were involved, we reflected, we realised it was wrong and against the very principles surrounding the empire (to liberate and promote freedom of the people), and we did the MOST to abolish it. We did the same in recent years with legalising gay marriage. So, I think it's shameful for any Brit to shit on their own country and try to suppress its traditions, culture and historical significance in establishing the world we know today.

Why is that? We know that slavery was eventually stopped by Britain. But before we stopped it we were second in the slave trade. So we can be proud of stopping the slave trade, but ashamed of our involvement in it before that. They are not mutually exclusive. The statue of Colston was torn down and that’s wrong. However there have been requests by the public to move the statue since at least the 70’s to the council. After waiting for 50 years some people took matters into their own hands. Colston himself was a conflicted man; he made his fortune by slavery but then spent much of that fortune on philanthropic endeavors. So on one hand we can be proud of what Colston did in his latter years, but not his younger years. Really, the failing is that the statue (or statue plaque) failed to detail the journey of the man himself. He did bad things, he saw the error of his ways and then sought to rectify this eventually. For that he should be commended.

They're berated with how bad the British Empire was for their involvement with the slave trade - this is current educational zeitgeist and it's awful. Slavery itself isn’t what black people complain about. They created laws that protected white people from slavery regardless of nationality. Slavery in Rome did not target only one ethnic group. Anyone could either be slave or Roman. Conquered nations become slave regardless of ethnicity or nationality. Black people could become Romans too. There is much for we Brits to be embarrassed about and ashamed of when you look at our history especially the British Empire and our role in Slavery. However, a serious in-depth investigation into the entire history of these events reveal how Britain led the way in the freeing of slaves and ushering in Democracy with all its benefits across the globe. This doesn’t excuse our mistakes but it does provide some balance when looking at the entire record of events. I'm british and we learnt about this in school. This cost UK extremely INSANE amounts of money, it cost £20million back in 1833 the government's expenditure back then was only £48million so 40% of spending went onto this, plus take into account uk just finished a major war defeating napoleon in 1815 battle of Waterloo so money was pretty tight. If you inflate that sum in today's money with the inflation of income and the economy per person it equals to £100billion, roughly 140billion usd. This is why the cries of '400 years of slavery' by BLM makes so little sense here in England, first of all, it's inaccurate even for the American slave trade. But further than that, Slavery had been illegal in england for over 700 years by the time Columbus made his voyage to 'the new world'. And we paid our reparations for our involvement in the ancient slave trade, every british citizen paid in tax, for hundreds of years, to repay our involvement in that deplorable trade. We finally paid back that debt in 2015. This is a detail about the slave trade that is not taught, it's so well documented, but never taught. It should be, and we should indeed be proud of our nation and our ancestors for leading that charge. It could act as a galvanising force for britain, something to unite us all against the remnants of racism and discrimination. If we could end the slave trade, we can do basically anything.

It should be a point of pride that they enacted their principles without regard to cost. @@cromwellg60 its a bit hidden next to Hardman Street. Tell them you're family and they'll give you a bag of crisps. Its very near Hope Street and the Phil - lots of pubs round there. Shamefully, I knew they'd renamed Roscoe and Gladstone Halls of Residence because of slavery, I hadn't realised it was just Gladstone ... you made me read about your ancestor on wiki. for which I thank you. (I'm no Liverpudlian, but I know it like the back of my hand, if not its history)

Wonderful ancestry to have. I lived in Roscoe and Gladstone Halls during my first year at Liverpool University. Regrettably, in a cowardly move in response to the BLM riots of 2020, the name was changed due to the fact that Gladstone's *father* had had investments in a slave plantation. The sins of the father indeed. The fact that Roscoe was actively antislavery was not mentioned.

As a naturalised British citizen of Indian and Filipino descent, both countries were colonised by western countries ( India by the British, Philippines by the Spaniards and then by the Americans), slavery was widespread in both countries prior to being colonised. It was the western powers that outlawed them.

Here from the U.S. "A slave is free as soon as he sets foot on English soil....The air of England is too pure for a slave to breathe." What a statement! Edit: Wow! All I did was quote the video! xD

Britain Ended Slavery? HUH? What NONSENSE! Britain paid a fine to the United States Government post Civil War for selling 2 warships to the Confederacy, for crissake! They sold Enfield rifles to the Confederate Army! Got paid in SLAVE-PICKED COTTON!!! England was funding and supplying arms and support to the Confederacy 2 years after Slavery Was outlawed in the USA!!! Slavery was outlawed in the USA in 1863. The Civil war ended in 1865! Americans ended slavery!!! Britain was still profiting off slavery! And by the way, when British colonies in New England voted to ban the slave trade in their state in the early 1700s, The British Crown Forbade It ! Britain was making too much money off the African slave trade.

@@lawrenceallen8096 The Emancipation Declaration (1862) did not end slavery in the United States. It was still legal in non-rebelling states(Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware). Also the 13th amendment allows slavery after conviction of a crime(chain gangs).

@@lawrenceallen8096 that's true, but in 1862, Lancashire mill workers, at great personal sacrifice, took a principled stand by refusing to touch raw cotton picked by US slaves. In 1863, The US President wrote to the 'working men of Manchester' thanking them for their anti-slavery stance.

I honestly don't know how you managed to watch that so calmly, I applaud you. It made my blood boil, the lives of all those African natives meant nothing to the scumbags who traded them. I would like to formally welcome you to the UK, it is a pleasure to have you here, and I hope you enjoy your stay. If you decide to venture to the lake District, send me a message. I can give you some links for some of the best areas to visit, we have a lot of hidden gems around here.
