The song is based on the poem the charge of the light brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson on 2 December 1854 Based on an event at the battle of Balaclava in the Crimea war on the 25 October 1854 the Light brigade cavalry numbering 600 armed with lances and swords were orders to charge a Turkish canon emplacement overrun by the Russians to prevent the capture of the guns. somehow the orders were mistaken and the and the cavalry attacked instead the main Russian canons located in a valley the guns to the front the left and right. The light brigade overrun the guns but had to retire. suffering 278 casualties and 335 horses killed in action, or obliged afterwards to be destroyed from wounds. Trust us British to turn a disaster into a heroic event.
