At the time James wrote and recorded his song, James and his father both thought that his dad was dying. He needed a kidney transplant and without one he would have died. For the longest time they were unable to find a match. James wanted to do a tribute to his dad before he passed. Just so happened, a cousin of his dad saw the video found out what was happening to her cousin and offered to get tested. Luckily they were a match. James writing and recording this song saved his dad's life. Some things are just meant to be.

Thank you for this comment with the explanation!!! I was all messed up and confused. I was thinking, is this song about him telling his dad that it’s okay to let go, and then used his dying dad in the actual video?! Lmao so thank you!

So this cousin didnt know he was dying and saw a video then donated a kidney? Sounds weird cause if they're not close enough for the cousin to know why would they donate?
@NativeNYerChicHK

@@thehillshavepiestoot extended families lose touch all the time, people move and go on with their lives, doesn’t mean they don’t still love their family. Just because he wasn’t close enough to have known his uncle was dying at the time, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t still help if he could. And clearly that is what he did. Through this song he heard his uncle need a lifesaving kidney, tested as a match and donated it. It’s not weird at all. It’s a beautiful reminder for all of us that you don’t have to talk everyday to prove you still love someone. This was the ultimate show of love.

@@thehillshavepiestoot The Blunts are a military family and very private usually.James wanted to say goodbye to his father in the best way he knew how (through music) and when it came out the extended family got to know about his dad. One of the cousins got tested and was a match. If James hadn't made the song his dad would most certainly have passed.

His father was dying of kidney failure. He wrote the song to represent the role reversal of him now caring for his dad. His dad found a donor for a new kidney and yes that's his father.

For me the "I'm not your son, you're not my father - We're two grown men saying goodbye" means that they are no longer an adult and a child, they are equals. They are saying goodbye to each other as equals. I also liked the story about how this video was shot. The only one not crying was his dad, everyone else - James, the camera man, the sound people, the director - were all bawling. Apparently, at the end of it, Charles Blunt looked around at all the crying people and said "Why is everyone crying? I'm still here". The song might also have saved Charles' life as a distant relative heard it, got tested and turned out to be a kidney donor match. Power of music!!

So many of you are just repeating the talking points of others. "'I'm not your son, you're not my father' means they are equals" - Not exactly.. It's just an expression to say to one another in hopes that the "goodbye" won't be as emotional.. Basically a similar reason why some people refuse to say "goodbye" to people. Don't know why people are coming at it from an "equal" angle, given the context of the whole song. Even without context, it makes less sense than the reason I already explained.
@Bianca_Arlette

@@Gutslinger No, it doesn't. You just don't like that people don't share your interpretation. So, why aren't being adult and accept that other people will have different interpretations of a line in a song.

I’m listening to that song and my 6 year old baby girl came upstairs to show me a picture she was working on. She saw me watching this. She looked at my screen and said “is that his daddy?”. I said “yes it is pumpkin”. She sat on the couch beside me and we watched the rest of the video together. I try to be a rock for her so I held back the tears. Beautiful song. Man I love my baby girl.

This song is rough to listen to, and even more difficult to watch the video. Really, truly heartwrenching. He wrote it when it seemed as though his father was likely to die from stage 4 kidney disease, and the video really rips out your heart and squeezes every tear drop from it that it can. Very, very powerful. Also, the fact that it shows this open love and emotion between a father and son is great, as that is not often shown in public. Thankfully, his father got a transplant and is still alive today. ~Be Blessed

if you've lost a parent or any loved one, this song rips through your heart. James's dad had donated one of his kidneys years ago and his remaining kidney was failing. He was in stage 4 chronic kidney disease and they couldn't find a donor. James wrote this as a tribute to his father and express his feelings about his father, they didn't think Blunt senior would live much longer. Shortly after this video came out, a distant cousin came forward and was a match. Mr.Blunt spent 2020 in the hospital in isolation. His immune system was low due to the transplant and Blunt said that they didn't want to risk his father's health with the covid pandemic. As far as I know and have read the senior Mr. Blunt is doing fine. So glad to see you back, your intro when you say different links have always made me laugh. Your reactions are always fun.
