Jimi Hendrix! He is said to be THE BEST guitarist ever. He played left handed, played with his teeth, behind his back, etc. He was just 27 when he left this earth but he was here during an iconic period in our countries history for sure. I’ve never met a Jimi Hendrix tune I didn’t like. Before he became so popular he backed The Isley Brothers and other big name bands. He was an awesome singer/songwriter/musician. He is missed.

I'ma suggest LIttle Wing. It's like a master class in guitar playing no matter who plays it, and Jimi wrote it. I feel you about his voice, but I happen to like those smoky, mid-range tones. Great reaction, Mr Boyd.

All along the watch tower. Voodoo child. My favorites. I was in Paris when Hendrix died. He was much beloved there. The open grief on the streets was so powerful. Much weeping and hysterics. It was amazing to be part of it. I cried and screamed too. Interesting times. If I had a time machine I would go back. 2020 - 2021 sucks. Let's go Brandon.

I've been a big fan of Jimi Hendrix since 1969/1970, and just missed seeing him in concert at the Forum in Inglewood, in April of 1970, then he died in September 1970. I got all his studio albums, and almost all of his albums that were produced after he died...

Jimi was beyond talented; it's like the guitar was an extension of his body. And he loved it so much! You can't help but smile when you watch him perform, his joy is contagious. And such a sweet, kind, spiritual man. I wish he'd spent more time on this earth. Reactors have a hard time with Hendrix videos, his estate keeps it locked down tight due to decades of legal battles. That's a shame, because I wish more people knew about him and his music instead of just buying his face on retro t-shirts at Walmart. Thanks for this reaction!

Jimi was from Seattle Washington. As a kid, he had to learn to play his guitar, upside down, which meant playing all of the chords upside down as well. Jimi's dad bought the 9year old a cheap Sears Bargain Basement guitar for only $12. It was a right handed guitar, Jimi was a lefty. No problem. It's easy to look more closely at his videos, and sure enough, Jimi's Stratocaster is being played by the left hander upside down. When he became World known Rock Superstar, the Fender guitar Co. offered to make him his own special left handed Stratocaster, just like Golf club companies make special clubs for the top golfers, because then they get to say "The Best golfers in the world use our clubs. Same with Sneakers from Niki and on and on. Jimi said "thanks, but I've been playing this way for so long now, I don't know if I'd be as good playing on a left handed guitar if I tried. Not only did Jimi become a Superstar, he started all of the stuff like playing behind his back, and with his teeth 30 yrs before anyone else did it. Jimi was the first back in 1967. He is the greatest of all time. He genuinely shocked the world with a style that had never been seen before, or since. "Jimi Hendrix was to Guitar playing, what Bruce Lee was to Kung Fu." Oh so much to say about Jimi at the Monterey Pop Festival. Watch the movie to get context - the Mommas and the Papas, Otis Redding (another amazing performance), Laura Nero, Jefferson Airplane, etc. This was the debut of The Jimi Hendrix Experience in the US. Pete Townsend of The Who had seen Jimi in London and apparently refused to go on stage after Hendrix. Good thing too. Pete had been making a splash smashing guitars. During Wild Thing, Jimi said that he would “sacrifice something that I really love” and set his guitar on fire. He does backwards somersaults during a guitar solo … no one had seen or heard anything like his performance before. Playing behind his head, picking with his teeth, etc. came out of his years playing rhythm guitar on the chitlin circuit with Little Richard, the Isley Brothers et al. Then compare this performance in the summer of 1967 with New Years Eve 1969-70 and “Machine Gun”. Jimi possessed his guitar, or it possessed him, in ways no one imagined yet alone attempted.

The song is a version of a Blues classic, lot's of 60's rock is blues based and inventively builds on classic jazz and blues, his interpretation is a step up from most of his contemporaries.

I think the lyrics, the music, and Jimi's flabbergast of a performance (playing with his teeth and later behind his head) all together embodies the word/meaning of "jealousy." (1) Joe believes his woman should only be with him, and if not then she will never be with anyone else. (2) Great sounds with all the instruments further sucking the listener inward, (3) Jimi's skills are incredible, to say the least. Who wouldn't want to be a star like that? (He served his Country in the Army too. So, a rock star and a trained hero.)

It's hard to over state how good this man was. Most people play guitar. With Jimi the guitar is just there to translate the sound in his head. He did solos where he turned the tuning pegs to play. The absolute confidence in your ears that would take is astounding. If you can find a version of Little Wing (not the bad SRV version) that wont get blocked it's worth checking out.

Great Hey Joe version was made by Mink Deville, later: Willy Deville. And another great song of Jimi Hendrix is All Along the Watchtower, written (and also performed) by Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan liked Jimi’s version better. He was stunned. Never said that about any of his other songs, and dozens probably hundreds have been covered by many different singers from all genres. But Jimi blew Dylan away. Jimi owns that song now. Even though Dylan’s version is terrific.

I love the way you dissect a song...short, succinct; perfect. I've seen no other reactor on KZfaq do this. Props. I have the perfect song for you to do this to: Jimi's rendition of the national anthem at Woodstock. Since he had been to Vietnam, he brilliantly depicts the bombings at destruction he witnessed through his upsidedown Fender (no left-handed ones existed yet.) You will literally be blown away by this performance that ended up defining a whole decade of US history. There is a version with a short interview with him at the end. Be sure to watch this one to hear his response to being asked " Doesn't if bother you that people are saying you disrespect it by playing it that way?" PS, I would subscribe to Patreon for you if I could but I'm a disabled veteran myself and our government doesn't give us squat to live on. So, hope you'll understand and know that I will never suggest a song to you that doesn't absolutely deserve a reaction from you. Respect, Bro.

Jimi was aware he wasn't the greatest vocalist, but when you can make a guitar sing like this, who cares. There are so many greats from him. My momma loved him! She use to tell me the reason he always wore a headband or a scarf tied around his head was because it was holding a hit of acid in place. I don't know if that is true or if my momma was just bullshitin me, but when I was young and knowing about a lot of classic rock performers I have just always believed it...lol My mom raised me on some of the best music and when I had kids I made sure they got to listen to classic rock so it doesn't fade away, which now the music I listened to is considered classic rock...getting old!

That song - great performance though it clearly is - doesn't even scratch the surface when it comes to James Marshall Hendrix. He's one of a very, very small group of musicians who actually changed the way his instrument can be played. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of official Hendrix releases that are available on KZfaq. Of what there is, "Purple Haze", "All Along The Watchtower", "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", "Bold As Love", "Are You Experienced" (all studio versions), anything from Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969), Berkeley (1970), Atlanta (1970) or the Band Of Gypsys version of "Machine Gun" are all essential.

I would suggest you check out Jimi’s Hear My Train A Comin’ (acoustic) version. Not only is his guitar playing fantastic but i think his vocal ability shines a bit better as well.

I know someone probably mentioned this…but this was the band’s first show in the United States. Joni had two hits of very potent acid called “Monterey Purple”, made specifically for the festival by Owsley Stanley (The King of LSD), tucked under his headband during this set. Which not only explains his stage mannerisms, but adds another level onto this performance!

Iconic song from the Goat. Yes there are some amazing guitarists. Eric Clapton. Stevie Ray Vaughan. My favorite, Jeff Beck. Jimmy Page (Led Zep). But Hendrix is the best. I love him now as much as I did as a young teen.

All along the watchtower is his best song imo, because Bob Dylan wrote it and Jimi perfected it. He made it so much better in fact that after he covered it Dylan started playing it more like his version, but obviously all lyrical credit goes to Bob Dylan.
