Hearing that song for the first time is like being a kid opening the best present ever on Christmas morning. Hearing it for the hundredth time or seeing someone else discover it and really appreciate this new song they've just discovered is almost as good.

He's talking about life in the music business. He was literally out near the mountains taking a break, living life, and he was thinking "well this is pretty good. Definitely better than dealing with the business and all that in our work life." Great reaction as always!

No he had moved to Colorado after deciding to leave The James Gang, the track was already done without lyrics, he was mowing his new yard in Colorado and looked up at the Rocky Mountains with snow on them in the summer, he was so captivated by the beauty of them and the lyrics came to him, he jumped off his lawn mower to run inside to write them down, the mower kept going destroying his neighbors garden which Joe paid to replace. Expensive song to write but it of course paid off very soon!

Joe Walsh ... underrated guitar player?? WTF?! Underrated is the most overused word in reaction video comments. And probably the most incorrectly used word as well. Most people actually mean underappreciated. I can't figure out what the hell you mean though. Because he's neither one of those things.

His arrangements and his production are always really involved in the songs too. I often wonder if he was influenced toward that by his brother-in-law, as the Beatles also made really good use of both. In this, the choice to use that 8 or 16-bit mic--at a distance--was a genius way to illustrate the differences he was trying to illustrate between his 'real life' and 'business.'

Damn. You are so right. And Joe was such a gracious man, he let his backing players have their own songs on HIS solo album. Joe Vitale had an amazing song on this album called "Days Gone By" from Joe Vitale, and Kenny Passerelli on another tune. Joe has no ego. He just loves good music, and wants to let anyone put good stuff out there. And, yes, Joe did all the guitar parts because...well...why would you need another guitar player??? And I have to say, "Days Gone By" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.

This song has become more legendary as time goes by. The favorite by far for “garage bands” who gather together to jam out. Even if you don’t know the chords, it’s so easy to pick up and learn quickly. That’s the magic of this song. It’s Walsh’s Magnum Opus in all it’s simplicity. I've heard; "out to pasture, think it's safe to say, time to open fire"; -----, We are far enough away from people, time to light up" I've lived all over the country from coast to coast, Colorado brings back the best memories. Joe lived in Boulder, Co for a while (his young daughter was killed in a bus accident there). He was mowing his lawn one day and looked up at the front range of mountains and the lyrics came to him at that moment. I'd move back there in a second.

This song was conceived, written and recorded when Joe Walsh was living in Colorado. It was recorded at the Caribou Ranch, which was a recording studio outside of Boulder built by Jim Guercio, manager of the band Chicago. That band recorded five albums there, and many other bands recorded there too, from Elton John to The Beach Boys.

Joe Walsh said this song pretty much wrote itself; he had left James Gang and was on his own about a year and living in Colorado. He was mowing the lawn and looked up at the Front Range (mountains) and was blown away seeing they still were covered in snow in the summertime. He pushed aside thoughts of the groupies bemoaning his departure from James Gang, the rest is euphemistic how things are better now (in '73). My favorite song of Joe's from James Gang is THE BOMBER as recorded on the album James Gang Rides Again. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY is among his greatest solo works, and I'll suggest IN THE CITY, as well as ALL NIGHT LONG from Live You Tube recordings.

Got to see Mr. Joe Walsh a couple of times, and the other gentleman you were trying to reference, Mr. GEORGE Thorogood one time, and they are similar. Both like to have a good time with the audience at a show, and would not mind sharing a beer with you at the local bar later. Joe Walsh is one of the funkiest, bluesiest guitarist on the planet. Just this side of George Thorogood. Joe will tell you, "Life's Been Good", and while your at it, you can stay at the "Hotel California", an Eagles song, to which he contributes, a lot.

Joe wrote this shortly after moving to Colorado. He'd been in the successful and popular band James Gang. for many years. James Gang was a power trio and Joe was looking to expand musically. He made the risky decision to go off on his own. He was mowing his lawn at his new home when he got the idea for this song. The reoccurring line "And we don't need the ladies cryin' cause the story's sad. Cause the rocky mountain way is better than the way we had." is directed to fans of James Gang.

The story behind this song is even better. According to Walsh, he was in between bands, feeling kinda down. The James Gang had dissolved and he didn't know what was going to happen for him. He was outside mowing his lawn and he looked up at the Rockies and the lyrics suddenly came to him. He got excited, left the mower running, and ran into the house to write down the words! And YES, he's the guitarist. That's his thing. He was In The James Gang, Eagles and solo.

I’ve heard that the story behind this song is that shortly after the Eagles broke up - Joe Walsh and a bunch of his buddies rented a big house out in the mountains of Colorado or somewhere out that way by the Rockies, and just proceeded to party their asses off pretty much every day for months. It was during this time that he wrote this song. They were rumored to take their guns out to the pasture and fire away at anything that moved. The ladies crying cause the story’s sad refers to the the fact the bad had broken up. And the Rocky Mountain Way can never be a bad thing - compared to being on the road, living in hotels and being jet lagged all the time. And yes, Joe Walsh plays most all of the guitar riffs on this song. Watch him do it live - it will blow you away…

I saw Joe Walsh in OKC in about 1990. When this song came on he didn’t start singing, the audience did. To this day I believe Joe was too high or drunk and just forgot to sing. The review in the newspaper the next day said how cool it was that he let the audience start. Joe Walsh lived the Rocky Mountain Way.

This is in that period when Joe became a solo artist, right after his first Band, "The James Gang," ended, and before he joined "The Eagles." Joe could have stayed a solo artist and done just fine, but when The Eagles asked him to join the Band, it probably wasn't a tough decision. Joe Walsh is so darn talented.

I've seen Joe Walsh playing live a couple of times. I've never seen any guitar player bend the strings like he did.

BJ the Rocky Mountain way is in reference to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Mountains so majestic and beautiful nothing else like it in our country.

The story straight from Joe telling Howard Stern is that he wrote this after quitting his previous band The James Gang & moved to Colorado with a view to the Rocky Mtns. to form his new band Barnstorm. The Rocky Mountain Way is expressing he has it better then he did before with the The James Gang. Note the talk box used in the guitar solo. It modulates the mouth sound with the guitar sound. Also well known with Peter Frampton later.

That Riff is like "Bad To The Bone" by George Thorogood.......yeah Joe Walsh former member of The Eagles did this song on his solo album. He is playing guitar and Voice box on this song. He is considered one of best guitar players in music history.

I saw Joe play this one with Ringo Starr, Burton Cummings, Tim B Schmidt, and Todd Rundgren. '93 maybe. Was on the gorge in George Wa, at the Champs D'Elysees winery amphitheatre. Todd Rundgren played the slide guitar solo at that show.

This song is mainly about Joe just after leaving The James Gang (Cleveland area) and starting his own solo career. His solo career, although new and probably different, was going to be better in the long run. Rocky Mountain Way, is a metaphor for this move. He got the idea when mowing his grass after he he quit The James Gang and moved to Coloado.

Joe Walsh is the guitar player. Want more? Check out the Eagles. Oooh... "Those Shoes!" Lotta good stuff with Joe. I forget who said it but, he's supposedly "The most interesting people I ever met."
