John's greatest passion was flight. He was the son of an Air Force pilot He purchased an experimental plane and was test flying it when it crashed and he died. He was a leading candidate to be the “first civilian in space” on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986.Denver planned to write a song in space, but Christa McAuliffe was chosen instead to be the first teacher in space. He wrote a song about/to her called Flying For Me.

I had the biggest crush on him when I was in junior high school. He came to the Hampton Roads Coliseum in Virginia and a bunch of us went to see him. At the end of the show everyone ran to a door they thought he would be going out of. I don't like crowds so I stayed away. Then I looked to my right and there he was waving at me with a smile. Unfortunately this was before cell phones so I didn't get his picture but it absolutely made my day.

John Denver was a singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", "Annie's Song", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Poems, Prayers & Promises" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.

I actually like the rain . Not being out in it and getting wet . But listening to it fall ,especially on a tin roof . Then afterwards to go for walk and smell the air and the scent of the flowers and trees while treading on the damp earth It’s a beautiful experience. When it rains everyone is being rained on . So it’s very communal as well .

When the world is ready, another John Denver will come along to bring us back to the natural peace, harmony, and beauty of nature. Can you imagine John Denver throwing soup on a priceless piece of art to raise awareness of environmental issues? No, he lifted our spirits and let us soar with him through the mountains and in the sunshine and on the shining sea with Jacques on the Calypso. Ding, ding.

I have not heard this for DECADES! Thanks for the reminder. I love that entire album from his early days. I'm old enough that I got to see him in concert before he was a big star when he was doing college dates in 1969. In part because of his later "Country Roads" song, when my husband and I got married we bought our first house in the woods on a river in the country vs. buying a city or suburban house. Spread that joy indeed. Sometimes the simplest images and motifs, if played & sung at the right time, with enough skill & conviction, are just what folks need. John Denver came along at a time when that was certainly true--in the wake of some truly awful collective traumas, many dashed hopes, and much uncertainty about what the present had in store, and what the future could or should be. In the turbulent wake of all that, he sounded a gentle but clarion call to reconnect spiritually & emotionally to the natural world, to find meaning & sustaining beauty there, and that call resonated across a generational divide that had seemed pretty insurmountable at the time. That's probably why he remains such a beloved artist of his era.

Everything he sang, whether it was a love song, a remembrance of days past, humour (Grandma's Feather Bed), or simply the joy of an aspect of life, his voice turned to gold. Sunshine in this song is a person, not a thing. He's singing about a person whose presence literally gives him light. I can't listen to this song without crying because it reminds me of my twin, who passed away from cancer. Her presence in my life was always warm and sincere and comforting. When I hear this song, I think about how much I miss her. John had a gorgeous voice, so full of emotions that you couldn't help feeling some kind of way when you heard him. Voices like his are once in a lifetime. His guitar playing wasn't too shabby either.

John Denver had one of the most beautiful voices ever. True, pure talent that shone so brightly in the simplest of songs. Gone way to soon. As someone else mentioned, the song was written for the 1972 TV movie “Sunshine” . The movie is based on a true story of a 19 yr girl who had a little girl and then discovered she had bone cancer. The movie was developed using journals she had left for her daughter. Another heartbreakingly beautiful song from this movie is “My Sweet Lady”, made all the more poignant when taken in context (young mother dying of cancer).
