She paints a picture, alright -with words as well as brushes. She also did the artwork for her album covers. She's 80 and only just recently started performing again in public after recovering from a brain aneurysm in 2015. What a genius!

“ There’s something lost yet something gained in living every day.” Joni has some of the most Poignant lyrics. Really appreciate what you said Mugnify, It’s so true! Those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s only had the TV screen. Now we got all kinds of screens. Next Joni song, Woodstock, Live, the performance at this same BBC concert.

When, in concert, someone yelled "Play Taxi again!" Joni laughed and said, "The difference between being a painter and a singer is that no one ever yelled "Paint another Starry Night again!" She was delightful. Check out the timeless song "Circle Game"

Another popular female folk recording artist that was a contemporary of Joni Mitchell during the ''60's was Judy Collins. Judy collaborated with Stephen Stills one of the founding members of 'Crosby, Stills & Nash 'and released a recording of "Pretty Polly" back in 1968 that has a smooth vibe and flow that might be worth checking out. 🔍🔎💋👠🎭🎤🎸🥁🔉☮🎧

Big Yellow Taxi was a song she wrote in reaction to her first trip to Hawaii - coming in on the plane she looked down and saw the beauty from the air, but once she was on the ground she was shocked to see the view from the ground and it totally depressed her, so she sat down in the hotel room and wrote what she was feeling to see the natural beauty of the islands buried in a huge tourist trap.

I was never a fan of the original version of "Both Sides Now" (though it has since grown on me), but I recently discovered the version that Joni recorded in 2000, and that one broke me. What seemed academic or hypothetical in the 1969 version felt gut-wrenchingly REAL in the 2000 one.

Happy for you at your discovery of early Joni Mitchell! 😃 She also composed on/played piano and mountain dulcimer throughout her career. There are many various "styles" within her music over the decades.. folk, "country-ish", blues-influenced, jazz influenced, rock/pop, and even orchestral-backed songs. She is definitely NOT a single-flavor artist! 😍

I'm 73, and you have a really interesting perspective that rings true to me. But there's something more. Over all, most of our generation was genuinely not materialistic. Of course that's partially because life wasn't as hard as it is now - easier to move in and out of jobs. But we also needed so much less. So many expensive toys now. We had no cell phones, cable service, hulu, netflix, etc etc. All of those subscriptions get expensive, fast. And no Amazon/instant gratification. It takes longer to spend money when you have to walk into a bunch of stores and look around. But regardless of why, being not very materialistic meant that no one expected to be the next viral sensation. You got together with your friends, you wrote the best possible songs critical of the social fabric, and you COULD. No one micromanaging for the best career angle or screening for haters. To me, it's the sheer speed of life that squeezes out the opportunity to think and find truth.
