This was probably their biggest song, but Mark King on the bass. You should watch some of their live videos where's he's featured on bass. The dude is an insane slap monster. This song, he's really in low gear. When you hear him really play, it'll blow your brain up.

Two fun facts: Flea, from Red Hot Chili Peppers, calls Mark King "the man with the golden thumb"; and Polydor, their record label in the 80s, put an insurance on Mark's right thumb of £3 million.

The fact that he sings while playing like that is just phenomenal. And His unique slap-bass style really shows that he actually started out playing drums before switching to bass

I was going to leave a reply until I read yours. Spot on, Mark King is the King of the Bass Guitar. I watched one of his interview video's once and remember him saying when they first started playing "Lessons in Love" on stage that his thumb dried out so much that the skin cracked open and bled from time to time and later he started to tape his thumb in electrical tape from then on. BTW, in case anyone didn't know it, the keyboard player did most of the back up vocals. I remember back in the day some of the greatest 80's bands were coming out of Europe. Great review JayveeTV. Here is a link to a live performance of Lessons in Love. Enjoy... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJhmgJl21bO2k4k.html

I worked at the restaurant "Street Scene" as the manager. My office was in the basement with glass on two sides. It was mid-afternoon and I was down there doing paperwork. Because we hosted bands/entertainment for meals, (We had a connected basement, so the performers could come over uncerground and not be harrassed by fans). Anyways, I got four free tickets to every concert. Three of my best friends came rushing down the stairs in a panic and wanted to know if I could get them into the Level 42 concert the next night. I of course said yes. I went with them. Level 42 was one of the tightest bands I have ever heard! (And I have even been in some bands, and several Symphony Orchestras.) I had never heard them or of them, and damn, they knocked it out of the ballpark...

This band always stood out for me in the 80s and they still do because of the quality of their music and their smooth rhythmic sounds. Yeeahhhh Jay! Love Level 42 and not surprising you picked up on Mark King's bass lines, he's highly regarded for it especially his slap bass playing. Hopefully you'll do _"Lessons In Love"_ which is their biggest International Hit and my fave of theirs :).

I heard this once on the radio when I was a kid, and for years it drove me crazy because I didn't know who sang it. This was back in the early 90s, long before the Internet (let alone sites dedicated to music lyrics) was around. As the years went on, I could only remember the lyric "human after all." When I finally stumbled across it on KZfaq, one of the biggest mysteries of my childhood was solved. This is a great song, and I listen to it often. Thanks for reacting to it!

Another 80s classic. A song in no rush to make its mood, primarily because it states it from the start. A real feel-good song from a feel-good era.

Can't believe this song was from 35 years ago. Tears for all that time now so far away from me. There is an extended version if you want to get lost in the music for a bit longer. And why not? It's quite beautiful.

Saw them in concert at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Must've been mid-late 80's. Mark King came on stage playing and was wearing a body harness on and he took off, flying round the stage. He carried on playing and didn't miss a beat. That's still the first thing I think of to this day when I hear them ! Search KZfaq for "Mark King for Prague Proms 2011"

One of the best bands of the 80s - so much funk and groove. They never stood still even when they cracked the mainstream and fuse rock, acid jazz elements and funk effortlessly. One of my favourites is Heaven in my hands, one of their later tracks but a classic.

The 80s had a lot of different sounds, with hip-hop, synth-pop, new wave, punk, new romantic, and so many other sounds and genres being hugely popular, but entirely different. This group, and several others, were of a genre known as Jazz Funk. The strangest part of the story is that Mark King, the famous front-man and bassist, was not a bass player when the group formed, but mainly a drummer. However, King had recently sold his drum kit, and decided to learn the Bass for the group. I think you'll agree that his background in drums and percussion are a part of what gives him that very distinctive play style that was his own version or take on the thumb-slap play he'd seen in visiting American funk bassists. The playstyle can be hard on the thumb over time, especially the way King does it, and he often had to tape up his thumb during gigs using electrical tape. The group's fans, out of love for his sacrifice, often taped up their own thumbs with black electrical tape, and would give a show of those thumbs as support and appreciation during gigs. Jazz Funk was never really a mainstream genre in the UK, and the only other real example I can think of from the same time was Shakatak. In general, it was often felt that Jazz Funk was a bit too 'easy listening' in style, bland, compared to all the more extreme sounds that were breaking in the same era. However, the funk aspect continued to influence the scene especially as 'Club and Dance' sounds developed, and is especially strongly seen in the later appearance of Acid Jazz in acts like Jamiroquai

love that signature British 80s pop groove on this one. If you like this, then I highly suggest a reaction to these two 80s UK artists. The group ABC - The Look of Love and Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science. Both have that synth bass groove you mentioned and both music videos are fun and interesting!

Not many big hits, but that usually means that they have a lot of great, everlasting compositions. And they have A LOT. The whole World machine-album is amazing. And to see Mark King play and sing at the same time is insane.
