Many times, an audience will clap - once they are sure the singer is singing a particular song (in all genre). Nessun Dorma is arguably one of the most famous songs in Opera and everyone would have been anticipating him singing this particular song. Once they know where he is going, the excitement will spill over!

As far as the applause at the beginning. This is an aria taken from an opera in a concert setting. In an opera he would be in costume and makeup. They wouldn't applaud until the end there. Here they're reacting to first realizing what aria it is. And nessun dorma is his signature piece.

Hello Steve. People do clap during opera performances, after especially well done arias. Also, during real opera performances, there are NO mikes at all. The power of the singers' voices carry it to the whole house. La Scala opera house in Milan, for instance, has five balconies.

Thank-you Steve for your heart-felt comments. Luciano Pavarotti was certainly one of the all-time greats when it comes to opera. The two micro-phones allows the vocal to be recorded on separate channels, left and right for a surround-sound effect. This achieves a better quality sound than separating a single audio channel on the mixing desk.

He took at least 4 breaths during the time you thought he didn't take a breath. In opera, we are trained to drop our diaphragm in order to bring air into the lungs, so it sometimes looks as if we aren't "taking a breath." Breath control! I sang opera for over 7 years with the Arizona opera co.

This isn't an opera. It's a concert of opera arias where people clap more than actual operatic performance. You don't clap at an opera until the singer is finished singing...and then only only if it's an amazing rendition. Opera is simply a play with singing...often overdramatic and simplistic...But the music is absolutely heavenly!💗💗💗💗

NEEE' - sun - dorma = "NO ONE sleeps!" ( A Narcissistic Princess in an Ancient Palace in China is looking for a suitable husband, this Prince is selected to compete, and has to accomplish an impossible task, or he will be put to death. He sings this; because he is "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" so, noone can sleep until he accomplishes his Quest. It is a very enlightened approach to The Opera, I hope you enjoy your searches, and experiences. For a breather, in between the SERIOUS studies, you may find Andy Griffith's 1950's Comedy Album, a humourous break; "Wit and Wisdom of Andy Griffith" or "What it is, is" where he explains the STORY behind the Opera: "Carmen", and a few others. (He also made a monologe re: "Understanding FOOTBALL").

Oh goody…. I enjoy watching people reacting to opera, as I personally love opera. So here’s a layman’s 411.. an opera is a play with no talking only singing. There will have solos called arias (songs). Pavarotti was one of the most famous opera singers ever. Generally, but not always operas are sung in Italian. None of them really end happily… but some are funny, some just sad as hell. Check out Deana Damrou she is a soprano (sings the high notes). Watch her sing the queen of the night aria from The Magic Flute …. It’s intense.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/echke81ezp6taHU.html Pavarotti was not only the greatest tenor to have ever recorded - he is also credited with bringing Opera to millions of other fans by hosting charity concerts in his hometown and inviting other popular artists. This is my favorite - Miss Sarajevo - and it’s the story of U2 and how Pavarotti convinced them to write this song and why. His great friend Princess Diana suggested charity concerts for a cause - and Pavarotti spent several years dedicating his life to these events. All the duets are fantastic but this one holds a special place - a song for peace! Enjoy!!

Double mics...in case one poops out. And remember, this is a concert performance, so the singer is in front stage. In a regular performance, the orchestra is in the pit in front of the stage. Opera houses tend to be big, so the singer has to develop a voice to fly over the orchestra and be heard in the nose bleed section. I look forward to your other reactions.

@user-vm5ud4xw6n

This is one translation I found from “The Happy Linguist” It is sung by Prince Calaf to Turandot. The opera sort is sort of an Italian version of the fairy tale “Rumplestiltskin” None Shall Sleep (Or Nobody Shall Sleep) Nobody shall sleep! Nobody shall sleep! Even you O Princess in your cold room, look at the stars how they tremble with love, with hope. But my secret is shut away inside me. My name nobody will know…No! No! On your mouth I will say it when the light glistens And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die!) Vanish O night Fade stars! Fade stars! At dawn I will win! I will win! I will win! (Giacomo Puccini) It is pronounced Turando (silent T). She doesn’t seem to have a real name. The title Turandot is actually “Daughter of Turan.” Wikipedia has quite a bit more information Some might not agree with this and in fact this is the second translation I checked out. The first was slightly different (Set stars rather then Fade stars!). PS you are right about the audience applauding. Except since this is not an actual performance of the opera but rather a single performance of the Love aria they are most likely applauding the Maestro’s presence! BTW: one commenter wrote (about the double mics) “…might indicate a differential pair, pioneered by The Dead, virtually eliminating feedback.”
