They were THE best Southern Rock band, and I’d venture to say they’re in the top 5 Rock bands, ever. They’re my personal favorite. Hardly anyone makes music like this anymore. People aren’t playing instruments anymore. It’s a shame.

Billy Powell is a master at piano! And this song highlights his mastery!

These guys started in high school together, and when they got serious, they had a shack in the swamps they called Hell House, and they spent hours on end there, no a/c, and perfected their sound. They really worked hard to become as good as they were, and so tragic they had such an end.

Billy Powell was one of their roadies and they heard him messing around on the piano while he was setting the stage....they asked if he wanted to join the band!

Their Free Bird that day was the best live performance since Ronnie pissed off Mick Jagger so bad by putting his guitar army on Mick's private catwalk for the solo. It's good to see you younger guys showing respect do these past greats. I'm 66 years old. I've seen and heard them all. There has never been music ever, that was better, from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s. The talent was absolutely incredible. Oh and by the way, that's when people actually played instruments. Long live American rock music, soul music, country music and especially the blues. Without the blues we would have had nothing! Keep up the good work guys.

I seen them three times before the plane crash and my first ever concert was ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd on July 4, 1974 in Alabama and the modern Lynyrd Skynyrd is touring again in 2024 with ZZ Top and I have my April 6 tickets in Huntsville, Alabama… yeah I’m old lol 69 years and still love concerts!

This is a JJ Cale song … this version is considerably faster and grittier than the original. They both have a lot to recommend them… I sang a sort of hybrid of the two interpretations when I was in a band, years ago ❤️😇

Skynard was a great great band, lots of super songs. JJ Cale wrote this, and also Cocaine, After Midnight, and bunch of tunes others covered. JJ's made lots of albums. JJ's the lowest low key guy ever, but if you like, you'll really like him. He scratches an itch you might not know you've got.

Need to see a live version to appreciate it ...
